Chapter 25

The door to the prison cell slammed hard behind Kojo Ganyo. The police had come to his house to arrest him. Afia had been crying, telling the policeman who had put handcuffs on her husband's hands that he was innocent of whatever they were accusing him of doing.

"Woman, I would advise that you keep silent. Otherwise, whatever you say could be used against your husband", the policeman had advised her.

"Your husband thinks he's a journalist so he can just get up and write stories about anyone erh? The politicians are in search for this man. He is highly wanted. I'll advise you to warn him so he'll learn sense", the policeman had told Afia, ignoring her pleas.

She followed them to the police station, and decided to call Stephen.

"Please, help me", she said after Stephen answered her call.

"What's wrong Afia?" Stephen asked at the other end of the line.

"Your friend has been impeached, and I know it. A lie has been said against him. He is doing the right thing after all. So why do they want to do this terrible thing? Stephen you have to help me, you have to". Stephen got alarmed.

"Which Police Station did they take him to Afia?" He asked her.

"Accra City Police Station", she replied.

"Ok, ok, I'll be there shortly", he said hurriedly and quickly got his car keys.

On his way, he called Emily and his father to inform them. Within thirty minutes, he was at the police station.

"I want to see my friend, I want to see Kojo", he said vehemently after arriving at the police station.

"And who are you? My friend, you would do yourself a favor by taking your time", one policeman told him sharply.

"My father is the renowned Mr. Maxwell Adams", he said and brought out his ID as well as his father's. The policeman looked at both cards critically and realized what Stephen was saying was true. He looked deep into his face and saw the striking resemblance Stephen had with his Dad.

"Allow him in", the policeman told one of the guards who quickly took Stephen to see Kojo Ganyo. He was afraid of doing anything to displease Stephen, after getting to know about his Dad. He knew very well that Maxwell Adams could give an order and he would immediately lose his job.

"Stephen", Kojo Ganyo said upon sighting Stephen, his voice hoarse.

"Thank you for coming to see me Stephen." He said to him,crying.

"What happened my friend? I'll make sure to get you out of here. Those responsible for your arrest would pay dearly for it. I can assure you of that", Stephen said very angry.

"I was impeached, Stephen. They accused me of having an affair with a prostitute I don't even know. They just want to get rid of me Stephen. What would happen to my career? I'm scared Stephen", Kojo said bitterly.

"No, no,no don't say that okay? Nothing would happen to your career", Stephen said to encourage him.

"Stephen, you know very well that one way through which people lose their reputation is through sexual assault. They even claim to have evidence of everything, and the lady I learned has come out to tell her side of the story, making the case worse", Kojo lamented bitterly.

"Don't worry Kojo, we would surely get to the bottom of this. Whoever that lady is, she would regret ever getting herself involved in this", Stephen assured him.

"I wonder how Afia must be feeling now. Everyone would now get to know that she's my wife, what do I do now Stephen? I have always wanted to protect her from the public eye", he told Stephen worriedly.

"Don't you believe in God? I believe everything will be alright so don't you worry about a thing okay? Everything is going to be alright", Stephen assured him.

"By the way, where's Afia?" Stephen asked him. "She's the one who informed me about this", Stephen added.

"She went home to bring me something to eat", Kojo replied.

"What a virtuous woman", Stephen remarked impressed.

"I'll be on my way now Kojo. As I said earlier, don't worry about anything. I've informed my Dad about this; everything will be sorted out and you'll be out of here in no time", Stephen encouraged him further.

Emily, Afia and Stephen had gathered in Maxwell Adams' mansion. They called for the sudden meeting in order to discuss how to help Kojo Ganyo to be freed and not only that; they also wanted to ensure that he was declared innocent.

"Calm down Afia, your husband will be out in no time", Maxwell Adams tried to encourage Afia after seeing how restless she was. Emily held her close to herself to comfort her.

"I think those who are responsible should be arrested immediately. Call for their arrest Dad", Stephen said angrily.

"I plead that we think carefully through this before doing anything Stephen. These people are very cunning and therefore we must be careful in our dealings. If we just allow Dad to use his influence to free him, the whole public would think he used dubious means and even feel he has some links to some politicians. They would conclude that he is working for some politicians and would no longer believe in his stories. They would question his previous and current stories. This would cause his career to suffer. You know how passionate Kojo Ganyo is about his work", Emily stated with concern.

"I think Emily is right", Maxwell commented. "We have to be very careful with this case. It's very dicey. In as much as I have the power to order for Kojo's release, I think we should tread cautiously. The case must be handled in such a way that the general public would get to know the truth and believe it. What if later the people involved come out to say that Kojo Ganyo bribed me or that I bribed the authorities to bring about his release from the cells. I think we have to ask God for direction", he added and the rest nodded their heads in agreement.

After their meeting ended, they prayed together and asked God for direction. Afterwards they went home, encouraging Afia to be of good cheer.

The following morning, Maxwell Adams, through some trusted sources, was able to get the contact and details about the lady who had accused Kojo of sexual assault. She happened to be called Nancy Scott, a half British and half Ghanaian. From the investigations, she was supposed to be outside the country however was still around for unknown reasons. Her parents were very wealthy, and had so much money. She wasn't someone in need; therefore Maxwell couldn't understand why she had done this. They had another meeting and they discussed what to do next.

"I really don't understand why she had to do all this", Maxwell pointed out very confused.

"Dad, I think there is something fishy about all this. Probably they decided to take someone from a wealthy home, so that people wouldn't say the person was bribed with money. Mostly when the citizens hear about bribes, all they think about is bribery related to money. However I think there could be other forms of bribe, not necessarily money related". Stephen stated, causing the rest of them to ponder over what he had just said.

"What you just said makes sense my Dear", Emily stated.

"Exactly", Afia replied.

"I think we need to carry out further investigations about Nancy Scott. I would contact my trusted sources, so they would be of help", Maxwell added.

They prayed again before parting ways, asking God to take charge of the whole situation.

They met again for the third time, the next evening at Maxwell Adams' residence. Maxwell Adams was the first to speak up. What he said, encouraged and gave hope to all present.

"I have carried out some investigations and I also have good news", he began.

"As I speak, Nancy Scott is in the building!" He said excitedly putting surprised looks on their faces.

"Dad, did I hear you well?" Stephen asked him, unsure if he had heard his father clearly the first time.

"Oh yes you did hear me well Stephen. Nancy Scott is in the building", Maxwell Adams replied, not surprised at their perplexed looks.

"But why Dad? What is she doing here?" Stephen asked again.

"Well, let's just say that Nancy Scott walked right into the trap that I set for her", he responded proudly, putting them into more suspense as to what his plan really was. To satisfy their curiosity,he began to narrate his plans and how Nancy had arrived there.

"After my trusted sources carried out an investigation,they discovered that the Politicians behind this whole sham actually chose Nancy Scott to play the role of the victim due to some reasons. For instance, she is from a wealthy home and nobody is going to think that she decided to lie because she needed money. This could have been a strong point for any lawyer who would like to handle Kojo Ganyo 's case. However since she already has money,the lawyer may have to find other reasons which may be difficult to believe", Maxwell told them.

"Waoo, I see", Afia remarked with understanding.

"I also learned that Nancy is supposed to be outside the country; however she is currently in the country due to this very intention to impeach Kojo Ganyo, hmm", he added as the others listened attentively.

"I got to know that Nancy Scott's Uncle, Hon Adu-Gyamfi, is interested in the position of Member of Parliament to Ejisu".

"Ooh, I think I'm beginning to understand something here", Stephen responded.

"Kojo Ganyo recently released a video about Ejisu Constituency and he seems to have developed an interest in the stories surrounding the community."

"Exactly", Maxwell Adams added. "There is so much gold in that constituency, however the residents of Ejisu are very poor peasant farmers with terrible road network. As a result of the gold on the land, any politician who is appointed to serve within the constituency ends up becoming extremely rich at the expense of the people of Ejisu", Maxwell Adams continued.

"After Kojo Ganyo recently released a video about the state of the Ejisu people, the general public expressed so much contempt for the local government" , Emily added.

"Exactly my daughter", Maxwell replied. "The current minister for Ejisu,Hon Alhaji Yakubu, is so angry about the video released and I am very sure that he is also behind the impeachment", he continued.

"So Dad, how did Nancy Scott get in here? Where is she and what's your plan regarding her?" Stephen asked impatiently.

"Son, just calm down okay? I'll tell you all everything", Maxwell said with a smile and began.

"My investigations about Nancy Scott revealed that she sleeps with men, just for the fun of it and not necessarily because of money. My trusted sources revealed to me that she usually patronized one restaurant where the big people usually go; Chicken Yummy restaurant", he stated as they all listened attentively.

"I decided to send the driver there today,earlier than the time she usually came. He made advances at her after spotting her, and he managed to win her to himself", Maxwell Adams continued."

"Oblivious of what had been planned, she foolishly followed him home. He took her round like it was his own apartment, and led her to one of the guestrooms. He has informed me that she's there waiting, and I can't wait to terrorize her until she tells the truth about the wicked role she was asked to play", Maxwell Adams added angrily and the others looked at him, flabbergasted.

"Dad, what if she tells the truth about us, after she gets out of here?'" Stephen asked worriedly.

That's why I have back up son", Maxwell said, laughing at his son's statement.

He brought out a little box from the safe at the hall. He opened the box and brought out masks which robbers usually wore.

"We would do a recording of all what she'll say. However I'll ask Donald the driver to go in there first. There's a secret camera there however she doesn't know. Therefore Donald would go and try to ask her questions casually,in order to get her to talk. When she does, it would be a plus for us and Kojo Ganyo would be freed",he said hopefully.

Five minutes later, Donald was asked to join them in the meeting. He was excited to help.

"Boss, I'll do everything very well and the lady will talk", he assured them.

"Thank you so much for your support Donald", Emily said to him.

"Anything for you my madam", he responded and Stephen gave him a look that sent shivers down his pants.

He knew he had to steer clear of Emily otherwise Stephen would come after him. He looked away quickly and tried to concentrate on why he was there.

"So Donald, I'd like you to go in there and start to try to win Nancy Scott to yourself. I've already told you what you are to do. Therefore do it quickly and if she proves stubborn, we'll come in with our masks and scare her to tell the truth, just like the policemen do. Is that clearly understood?" Maxwell asked him sternly.

"Very well understood Sir, very well understood", Donald replied confidently.

Back in the guest room where Nancy Scott had been brought, the sound of the shower could be heard. She quickly finished taking her bath, waiting for Donald to come in. She had undressed and only had a nightwear on. Maxwell Adams had asked Donald to buy her one on their way, and Nancy had chosen one which she liked. It was very expensive however Donald had still bought it for her and she was very happy.

In about fifteen minutes, Donald entered the room to see the impatient Nancy.

"Gosh, what kept you so long?" Nancy asked angrily.

"I'm so sorry my love, I wanted the cook to prepare you something delicious for your beautiful body", Donald said and it seemed to calm her down.

"No, no, no my dear, I'm not concerned about any food whatsoever", she said.

"No, I have to be concerned. This is because I'm dealing with someone who has helped the nation get rid of one stubborn journalist who doesn't understand what it means to mind his own business", Donald said bluntly and Nancy got alarmed.

"You, you, you know me?" She asked afraid.

"Don't be scared Darling, I have your best interest at heart okay? I'm so glad you did it. You have no idea how proud I am of your high intelligence",he said and Nancy seemed to calm down.

"I would even want to marry you only if you'll allow me", he said deceitfully.

"Really?", she asked. "I'm not yet done with school and..."

"Shhh, that doesn't matter okay?", Donald said, putting his finger on her lips.

"I don't mind waiting for you to finish with your schooling. The most important thing for me is to wait for the one who has captured my heart with her esteemed intelligence and bravery. This is the kind of woman every man would desire to have", he said sweetly causing her to blush.

"You got no idea what the politicians say about you. I'm aspiring to become one, therefore I try to mingle with them in order to understand what goes on in the political setting", he added.

"Really? My Uncle is a politician, I can connect you with him", Nancy said.

"Waoo that would be wonderful. It would be nice meeting him", he responded.

"Yes it would. Actually, he and another politician came together to plan this impeachment against Kojo Ganyo. Since I was around, they decided to use me to play the role of the victim. Also, if any lawyer tried to handle the case, it would be somehow difficult because who would believe that a politician would like to use his or her family member to play the role of a victim in a case such as this? The stigmatization would be much and moreover I don't live in this country so I don't care much about that", she told him.

"Waoo, you're so intelligent. No wonder you're coming from a family of intelligent people", Donald praised her and she smiled.

"Another thing is that since my family is wealthy, no one is going to suspect that I did it for money. The reason I did it was because of my Uncle who wants to take over the Ejisu seat. He doesn't want Kojo to hinder his plans for the town. The rich want to get richer while the poor get poorer", she added.

"That's my girl", Donald said and she laughed.

"My uncle, Hon. Adu-Gyamfi, doesn't have any plans for the people of Ejisu. All he wants to do is to get the seat and sell the gold there. Can't you see that all the politicians who have served in Ejisu are rich?" She asked him and he nodded his head in agreement.

"My uncle is going to make sure he loots everything there, leaving no stone unturned", she added and they both laughed.

The issue about marriage had gotten her attention and that had made her trust him. She had no idea that all she was saying was being recorded. All this while, Maxwell and the rest of the family were watching everything on a big screen in the hall.

"Come on baby", Nancy said to Arnold, holding his necktie. Maxwell immediately took his phone and called Arnold. Arnold's phone rang and Nancy let him go.

"Ooh who is calling me at this time when I'm with my baby?" Arnold asked as though he didn't know Maxwell was the one calling. They family was certainly not going to watch them have sex, and the public wouldn't have to see that.

"Hello Chairman", Arnold said as he answered the call.

"You know why I'm calling so perform your trick and send her away", Maxwell said at the other end of the line.

"Right now? Oh shit. I don't think I can make it to that meeting now. I'm with my babe, I can't come now", Arnold replied and Maxwell laughed.

"Get set already Arnold and leave your so called babe", Maxwell replied.

"Okay, okay, right away. I don't know what to say to you people again. You actually called at the wrong time", Arnold said and hung up feigning worry.

"What's wrong Darling?" Nancy asked after seeing his worried look.

"Damn, damn,damn!", he said hitting the table next to him.

"Calm down baby, what's up?", she asked worriedly not knowing what was happening.

"You see my dear, I want to spend this night with you. However I'm into one oil business and whenever my cargo reaches the port, my signature is required before processing can begin. If I don't go early, the officials at the port can seize the cargo and I may not get it back", he deceived her.

"Ooh, Darling, is that why you're worried? Don't bother yourself. I love you already. So it doesn't matter whether we don't spend time together tonight. I'll do my best to ensure that we meet again." Nancy told him.

"Are you sure?" Donald asked and she nodded her head in affirmation.

"Ooh my Darling baby, you're such a Darling", Donald said and went towards her to hug her.

Just then, his phone rang again.

"My dear, quickly dress up so that I can drop you off before I go there. I think they're calling again",he said as she hurried to get herself dressed up.
