Chapter 138 138

Chapter 138 138
\[Caden’s POV\]
The ruling comes on January 15th, three weeks before Selena's due date.
We're gathered in Diana's conference room—Selena, Alessandro , and me—waiting for news that will shape the rest of our lives. The tension is a physical presence in the room, thick enough to choke on, pressing against my chest with every breath. The air itself feels heavy, weighted with months of accumulated fear and hope and desperate prayer. Selena's hands rest on her enormous belly, her knuckles white with the pressure of her grip. I can see the fine tremor running through her fingers, the way she's holding herself together through sheer force of will.
Alessandro hasn't stopped pacing since we arrived, his footsteps wearing a path in the expensive carpet. Each pass he makes feels like a countdown, a metronome Marcus ing time until everything changes.
I sit still because someone has to. Because falling apart isn't an option when the people I love need me to be steady. But inside, my heart is racing, my thoughts churning through every possible outcome.
The analytical part of my brain tries to calculate probabilities, assess likely scenarios, but the numbers keep scattering, overwhelmed by emotion I can't seem to control. My palms are sweating. My jaw aches from clenching. Every muscle in my body is coiled tight, ready for a blow that might never come—or might shatter everything we've built.
Diana enters with a manila folder and an expression I can't read. The door clicking shut behind her sounds impossibly loud in the silence. My heart stutters, fear and hope colliding in my chest with a force that makes me dizzy. Time seems to slow, each second stretching into eternity as she crosses to the table.
"The judge has ruled," she says, setting the folder on the table with careful precision. "In our favor. Substantially."
The words take a moment to penetrate the haze of anxiety. In our favor. We won. The syllables echo in my mind, foreign and strange, refusing to resolve into meaning. In our favor. We won. We actually won.
Selena makes a sound—half sob, half laugh—and covers her mouth with her hands. The cry that escapes her is raw, primal, the release of something she's been holding back for months. Tears are already streaming down her face, cutting tracks through the exhaustion that's become her constant companion. Her whole body shakes with the force of her emotion, and I watch her crumble and rebuild in the same breath.
Alessandro stops pacing, frozen, like he can't quite process what he's hearing. His face is a study in disbelief—mouth slightly open, eyes wide, the color slowly returning to cheeks that have been gray with stress for weeks. He looks like a man who's been told he's been pardoned moments before execution, unable to trust the reprieve.
"What does that mean exactly?" I ask, needing specifics, needing something concrete to hold onto. My voice comes out steadier than I feel, the words automatic, my brain clinging to facts like a life raft.
"It means the court has found sufficient evidence to support claims of harassment and intentional interference with Dr. Martinez 's professional opportunities. Dr. Vanelopehas been ordered to cease all contact with Dr. Martinez and his family. She's also facing significant financial penalties and a permanent Marcus on her professional record."
"She can't appeal?"
"She can try. But given the strength of the evidence, an appeal is unlikely to succeed. Her legal team has already indicated they may advise against pursuing one."
The relief that floods through me is so intense it borders on painful, a wave of release that leaves me trembling. It crashes over me like a physical force, washing away months of accumulated tension, fear, and barely suppressed panic. My eyes burn with tears I refuse to shed—not yet, not here—but the pressure builds behind them regardless.
Months of stress, of watching Alessandro deteriorate under the weight of Lisette's vendetta, of worrying about what this was doing to Selena and the baby—and now it's over. Or close enough to over that we can finally breathe. The breath I take feels like the first real one in months, filling lungs that have been constricted by constant anxiety.
Alessandro sinks into a chair, his legs apparently giving out. The controlled, composed man I've come to know disappears, replaced by someone unraveling at the seams—but in the best possible way. "It's done? She can't hurt us anymore?"
"The legal aspects are done," Diana confirms. "What she does personally is harder to control, but any further contact would violate the court order. That gives you significant protection."
Selena reaches for Alessandro 's hand, tears still streaming. Her face is transformed—not just by relief, but by something more profound. Hope. Real, unguarded hope that she's been afraid to feel for so long. "We did it. Alessandro , we actually did it."
He pulls her close—as close as her belly allows—and buries his face in her hair. His shoulders shake with what might be sobs or laughter or both. The sound he makes is broken and beautiful, the release of a man who's been carrying an impossible weight and has finally been allowed to set it down. I move to join them, completing the circle, wrapping my arms around both of them.
We stay like that for a long moment, three people holding each other in a lawyer's conference room, finally allowing ourselves to feel the magnitude of what we've survived. The embrace is awkward—too many limbs, Selena's belly pressing against us, the chairs in the way—but it's also perfect. I can feel Alessandro 's heartbeat against my arm, Selena's tears soaking into my shirt, the warmth of them both surrounding me like armor. This is what we fought for. This is what we won.
"I have paperwork for you to review," Diana says gently, clearly accustomed to emotional reactions from clients. "But it can wait. Take a moment. You've earned it."
We take more than a moment. We take an hour, sitting in that conference room, processing the end of a nightmare that's consumed us for months. Selena cries until she laughs, then laughs until she cries again. Alessandro holds her hand like he'll never let go, his thumb tracing circles on her skin in a gesture that's become unconscious habit. I sit beside them, grounded by their presence, letting the reality slowly sink in.
It's over. We survived. We won.
When we finally leave, the winter sun is setting, painting the city in shades of gold and pink. The light feels different now—warmer, more forgiving, as if the world itself is acknowledging our victory. Selena's hand is warm in mine, Alessandro 's shoulder pressed against my other side. We walk slowly, savoring the simple pleasure of moving through a world that suddenly feels less threatening.
"Let's go home," Selena says. "I want to tell Meghan she's safe."
