Chapter 180 Forever Starts Here
ZARA

My hands shook slightly as I smoothed down the soft lace of my wedding dress, staring at my reflection in the full length mirror of the bridal suite.

It was finally here. Saturday morning had arrived in a blur of laughter, curling irons, and the sweet scent of white roses. For months, our lives had been completely taken over by the planning of this day, but standing here now, the busy noise of the city felt a million miles away. The dark shadow of Blackthorn was officially behind us, the trials were over, and the new beginning I had prayed for was waiting just outside the double doors.

"If you cry before the photographer even takes the first photo, Mia, I am locking you out of the reception room," Chloe Evans laughed, rushing into the suite to hand me my bouquet.

Mia stood near the window, already dabbing her eyes with a tissue as she adjusted her bridesmaid dress. She had been running around since sunrise making sure every single detail was in place. "Shut up, Chloe. I’m allowed to be a mess. Avery was supposed to be standing right here as the maid of honor, but since she’s performing the main song, I had to step in and take her place. I have double the responsibility today."

Avery walked in right behind her, carrying her acoustic guitar with a quiet smile. She looked at me, her eyes full of genuine warmth as she reached out to squeeze my fingers. "The soundcheck on the pavilion is completely clear, Zee. The strings are ready. I’m going to make sure your walk down the aisle is perfect."

"Thank you, Avery," I whispered, a tight, emotional knot forming in my throat as I looked at the three girls who had stood by me through the worst years of my life.

Ten minutes before the ceremony was scheduled to begin, a soft knock sounded against the wooden door. My father, Frederick, stepped inside looking incredibly handsome in his black tuxedo, his eyes shining with pride as he held his arm out for me. But as I took his arm, a tall, familiar silhouette stepped into the corridor behind him.

Damon.

My breath caught for a split second, but there was no panic, and there was no lingering heartbreak. It was just pure relief. He had just flown back from overseas, where he was finally playing professional lacrosse for a major league. He looked completely different now, healthy, confident, and entirely at peace. The heavy exhaustion that used to cloud his face was completely gone, and he carried himself like a man who had finally escaped his family's cage and reclaimed his own life.

"You look absolutely beautiful, Zara," Damon said softly, his deep voice carrying a relaxed warmth I hadn't heard in years.

"Thank you, Damon," I murmured, a genuine smile breaking across my face.

He didn't look at my veil with any bitterness. He stepped back into the hallway where Kai was currently waiting, adjusting the cuffs of his dark shirt. Tony was standing right beside Kai as his best man, his massive frame radiating pure joy as the old school friends locked eyes.

Damon walked straight up to Kai, extending his hand with total sincerity. "Congratulations, man. Take care of her."

Kai didn't hesitate. He reached out and shook Damon's hand firmly, looking his old homeboy directly in the eye with a profound respect. "Thank you, Damon. I will. I'm really glad you made it."

The long, difficult history between them completely cleared away in that single handshake.

A moment later, Damon turned back toward me, gesturing toward the quiet balcony at the end of the hall. "Can we talk privately for just a second, Zee? Before the music starts."

"Of course," I said, my father giving me an encouraging nod as he stepped back into the suite to give us space.

We walked to the edge of the window overlooking the garden. There was no awkward tension between us, and there were no hidden romantic feelings. It was just a deep, quiet gratitude for everything we had survived.

"I just wanted to say thank you, Zara," Damon whispered, his voice low and completely human as he looked down at me. "Thank you for loving me when I didn't even know how to love myself. If you hadn't fought for me, and if you hadn't pushed me to face the truth, I’d still be trapped in that skyscraper wearing my father’s suits."

The tears finally broke past my eyelashes, tracking down my cheeks as I looked up at him.

"And thank you for letting me go, Damon. You gave me the space to find where I truly belonged, and you saved my family. I am so incredibly proud of the man you’ve become."

Damon smiled, a real, unforced expression that told me his soul was completely whole. We stepped forward and shared a brief, warm hug, closing that massive chapter of our lives forever in the quiet hallway.

Kai watched us from the end of the corridor. He didn't get jealous, and his jaw didn't tighten in anger. He simply smiled, his posture completely relaxed because absolute trust had become the unbreakable foundation of our relationship. He knew my heart belonged entirely to him.

The double doors of the grand pavilion finally swung open, and the acoustic chords of Avery’s guitar began to float through the crisp air. She was singing a song she had written just for us, her beautiful, raw voice making the entire crowd fall into a breathless silence.

I locked my arm securely through my father’s, my heart hammering a wild, brilliant rhythm against my ribs as he proudly guided me down the long white aisle. The outdoor garden was a beautiful sea of the people who mattered most. Amelia sat in the very front row, crying happily throughout the entire walk as she clutched a tissue. Right beside her sat Kai's mother, dressed in a stunning cream outfit. She looked completely healthy and calm now, her eyes bright and free of the trauma that Anthony’s years of abuse had caused. She looked at her son with a proud, loving smile that made my chest swell with warmth.

I reached the altar, and my father placed my hand directly into Kai’s.

Kai’s large fingers wrapped securely around mine, his touch warm, steady, and full of a protective reassurance that instantly calmed my racing pulse. He looked down into my eyes with a clear, gentle adoration that made me feel like the only person in the world. Our vows weren't a script, they were a real, honest promise to love each other through every mistake and every victory we had ahead of us.

"I do," Kai whispered, his deep voice carrying a wave of emotion that vibrated straight through my core.

"I do," I breathed back, all my walls completely gone.

We shared our first kiss as husband and wife under the sky, a deep, passionate embrace that brought our friends and family to their feet in a massive cheer. The wedding continued into a spectacular, joyful celebration inside the grand hall, the tables filled with endless laughter, dancing, and stories. We slow-danced beneath the glowing lights, my head resting securely against his shoulder, completely whole for the first time in my life.

As the evening faded and the winter stars illuminated the windows, I watched our friends laughing across the room, my hand tightly woven into Kai's.

People think soulmates are the people who never leave you. I don't believe that anymore. Some people come into your life to save you. Some come to teach you. Some come to help you find yourself. And if you're lucky... the person you choose at the end is the one who loves every version of who you've become.
