Chapter 31
"He has a head injury, resulting in a serious concussion. Did anyone know about him hitting his head?"
Cynthia and I stared at the doctor in confusion, neither of us remembering Obsidian stating anything about hitting his head. The doctor frowned, realizing we had no idea what she was even talking about. Releasing a breath, she glanced at Obsidian's sleeping form while trying to keep her expressions neutral.
"So, he's in a coma," Cynthia said softly. "I know enough about them to know concussions can lead to those."
The doctor nodded, "While there was no obvious physical sign of a head injury, we ran a few tests and found a large intracranial hematoma. Things like these require immediate surgery, which is why they're preparing right now for us to bring him in. Considering he has been in a coma for nearly twenty-four hours, the survival rate is decently low. However, all this information comes from humans getting injuries like these. Luckily for werewolves, we can last a little bit longer before those chances start going down."
Cynthia nodded, "He'll be okay?"
"I can't say for sure, but I don't want to get your hopes down. We're going to try everything we can."
"Thank you."
As we walked back out to the waiting room I gently hugged Cynthia, telling her Obsidian will be fine. Despite my reassurance for her, I didn't know if I believed myself. While Obsidian is a very strong man and a supernatural creature, we aren't immune to deaths caused by head injuries. Especially ones that no one knew about until almost twenty-four hours later after the victim went into a coma. Part of me was a little angry with him, wanting to yell at him, slap him, demand answers on why he decided not to tell us he had fallen. But that wouldn't save him nor get us anywhere, all we could do was wait.
"I'll wait here, maybe you should go and help your father with this hunter issue," Cynthia suggested, giving me a weak smile.
I frowned, "Are you sure?"
"Yeah, I can handle myself. Besides, I texted Luthias, he should be here in a few hours."
"Alright, just let me know okay? And if you need anything, I'm literally a call away."
She nodded quietly and sat down in a chair, staring at her phone with a dull appearance. I gently squeezed her shoulder before leaving the hospital, knowing she was a strong woman. I took my time walking down the path towards the pack house, humming some random tune as I took in the scene around me. For a moment, I was able to calm my nerves and breathe again, taking in the peaceful scenery.
My time alone made me think of everything that has happened so far, wishing all of this could just come to an end. I winced as I thought of our time with the hunters, of all the moments where they would beat Obsidian, making him vulnerable and weak. I didn't care about any of the pain I was going through, nothing could amount to seeing what he went through. Seeing him so sick in the hospital bed, suffering while I attempted to help Malachi with the pack, it broke a piece of my heart. I had wanted to be there for him, comforting him even though I know he would have refused it.
Then there are the warriors we have lost and will lose to these new hybrids, monsters that none of us can wrap our heads around. Our genes are so different from those of a vampire, how would they even get them to work together to create something so vile?
"Princess Sylvia, right?"
I jumped a little as a guy ran up beside me, his lips pulled into a smile as he greeted me. I stared at him for a second, in slight shock of his sudden appearance. Forcing myself to function again, I forced a smile and returned his greeting.
"Good evening," I said softly.
He chuckled, "Sorry, didn't mean to scare you there. So, how's that alpha doing?"
"Alpha Obsidian."
"What?"
"His name is Obsidian," I answered.
Nodding, he glanced back at the building, "How is he?"
"He's fine."
"Everyone has been talking about it."
"I'm sorry, who are you?" I asked, stopping as I studied him.
He grinned, "Prince Fernando, future king of the Spain packs."
"Ah, I see. So, why are you talking to me?"
He seemed a little surprised by my question, but I could care less. I'm not sure why I was feeling protective over Obsidian, but something about Fernando was giving me a bad feeling. Fernando chuckled softly as he scratched the back of his head, becoming nervous.
"I... uh...I was concerned. Obsidian is known to be a powerful king, if he passes and has no heir then—"
"Then his sister will take over or his brother," I snapped, cutting him off.
He frowned, "He has siblings?"
"Yes. Why are you so concerned about who will take over the North American packs?"
"I just...I..."
I folded my arms across my chest, "You think you could have taken them over, to expand your own kingdom."
"Well, sort of. But I am truly worried about him."
"Yeah, okay. I have important manners to get to, if you don't mind. It was a pleasure speaking with you, Fernando."
He nodded as I walked away, not giving him a chance to answer. I made a mental note to keep an eye on him, something wasn't right about him. I quickly sent Cynthia a text, asking if Obsidian knew a Prince Fernando and if they were close. If he was honestly worried and maybe a close friend of his, then I'll apologize for my rudeness. However, if he isn't then I'll be watching him, making sure he doesn't try anything.
