Glasgow Smile

Evylynn's POV:

Thankfully the holidays were finally over. I'd resumed my role of taking care of Georgie. Gus and Haddy had made a secret out of their romance. He'd gone to London for "business" twice in the three weeks since the party. I rolled my eyes at the thought of that. Haddy had called when she got to London but wouldn't divulge anything about the trip to town with Gus, stating only that they had barely spoken and that he had been kind. Haddy would be back tomorrow, and of course, since we were staying at Gus's, she would also be staying there instead of Theo and my mostly empty house. I was going to be grilling her about her time in London. Where Gus had magically stayed in the same hotel district she'd been staying in.

"Haddy will be here tomorrow," I said, rolling over in the bed to face Theo. He didn't say anything, causing me to sigh.

"What?" He asked as he turned his head to look at me. His hair was a mess from my fingers being in it the several times we'd been together in the night. He was staying in town on business for a few days and couldn't seem to get enough of me. I couldn't bring myself to mind.

"It's just that Gus has been there to see her and I don't know how I feel about it."

"We don't know that." He said turning on his side to face me. I looked at him skeptically, laughing a little.

"He's been up to London. When does he ever go to London?"

"Would it be so bad?" He asked twirling one of the strands of my hair around his fingers. Not looking me in the eye. I thought long and hard about my answer.

"No, it wouldn't," I said with a sigh. Gus and Haddy both deserved to find a love like mine and Theo's.

The Next Day:

We lay there in bed for a few more minutes in silence. We'd just woken for the day, the sun was barely over the horizon. There was the sound of a car speeding into the driveway, Theo sat up looking towards the windows. We heard the doors shut and then wailing sounds came through the halls shortly after. Theo and I jumped up from bed, running towards the sounds in nothing but our sleep clothes. Micheal wore nothing but his undershorts. He was a few feet ahead of me because of his long legs. The wailing was loud and growing louder the closer we got to the foyer. As we approached the stairs, Theo slowed in front of me, reaching back to stop me from going any further until he assessed the situation. I looked over his shoulder, Henry was on the floor surrounded by too many people to see what was going on. I pushed past Theo and thumped down the stairs as quickly as my legs would carry me. I pushed my way through the servants, shoving the alcohol-scented Andrew out of the way. Henry, oh my god Henry. He was covered in blood.

"What happened?!" I asked as I looked at his now ruined face and the cuts I couldn't see through his tattered and torn shirt.

"We were walking down the lane after leaving the pub, heading to the betting shop to sleep off the whiskey when we were jumped. Well, Henry was jumped. I tried to get them off of him but there were too many and they held me back." Andrew spewed out.

"They bloody cut him." Gus snarled.

"Henry, I'm gonna fix this as best I can ok?" I said turning away from Gus and looking into Henry's wide eyes.

"They cut me." He said tears mixing with the blood streaming down his face.

"I need help. You'll have to help." I looked up at Gus, I need towels, hot water, a table, bandages, needles, medical grade thread." I began listing off. Gus's maid jumped into action.

"Henry I need to assess the rest of your body ok? I'm not trying to hurt you but I am going to have to examine you ok?" I said turning back to Henry, he nodded slightly. I began unbuttoning his shirt, the cuts across his chest and stomach weren't deep enough to need stitches but needed treatment just the same. They'd begun clotting so my main focus was the two deep cuts on his face, a near-perfect Glasgow smile. My heart hurt for him I thought as the maid brought back supplies. Andrew and Henry came in with a table and lifted him onto it, he screamed loud enough to make my ears ring. I dipped a cloth bandage in some alcohol to begin cleaning the wounds.

"This is going to hurt," I uttered. I needed a facility to do this in but it wasn't safe to move him. Especially since we didn't know who had hurt him yet. This would have to do. He nodded, his eyes pleading with me. I barely touched him and he was yelling again, causing him to pass out from the pain. This was better, maybe he'd stay out long enough for me to finish cleaning his wounds. I worked quickly and began stitching his face up when I was done cleaning the wounds. I had Theo monitor his heart rate through his wrist while I stitched. I was nearly done with the first side when I heard the front door open and a gasp. I looked over my shoulder briefly enough to see Haddy in the doorway. Pale and shocked. I didn't have time to console her, I had to finish this before he woke. I focused on the task at hand and began stitching again, barely noticing Gus make his way over to her and guiding her from the room.

I finished stitching his face before he woke. The scars would be gruesome but I'd did my best to make it as clean as possible. Poor Henry, my heart ached for him. He'd been through so much these last few months, now he was marred for life. I stood at the side of the bed they'd moved him to on the main floor, still in my night clothes and covered in his blood.

"He hasn't woken," Gus said from the door, causing me to jump. My nerves were fried, and I was jumpy and scared.

"It's his brain's way of protecting itself. His pulse is steady, he'll wake when he's ready too. He'll be weak for a while but he'll survive."

"Thank you, Evylynn," Gus said, something he'd never done, even when I saved him.

"You're welcome. Where's Hadleigh?" I questioned suddenly remembering her.
