Chapter 36 Final Deception
Chapter 36 Final Deception
I drove the long way to the War Chest facility by myself. The facility was located miles from the mansion, a windowless, hardened bunker built into the side of a remote office complex. Nelson had insisted on its remote location for security. Now, that same isolation was my prison for the night.
The War Chest was supposed to house the sensitive documents for the White Whale acquisition. In reality, it was housing a desperate traitor and the final, terrifying act of my counter con.
I had dressed carefully in a designer dress that screamed confidence and success, and underneath, a cold, empty feeling. I was going to reward Nelson for his ‘loyalty’ one last time, and I was going to use my body to buy the final forty eight hours of security before I destroyed him.
I parked the car and approached the security door where Nelson had to approve my entry himself. The heavy steel door slid open with a hiss and Nelson stood there, his face lighting up with a mixture of surprise and satisfaction. He was wearing casual clothes, looking completely relaxed in his secure bubble.
“Rita,” he exclaimed, walking toward me, his arms already reaching out. “I didn’t expect you. What a fantastic surprise.”
His arms wrapped around me and I forced myself to lean into his embrace, forcing my lips into a smile. The touch felt like a violation of the pure intimacy I had shared with Klark just hours ago. But I needed this performance to be flawless.
“I couldn’t stay away,” I lied easily, my voice low and warm. “You’re working so hard on the security for the White Whale. I wanted to thank you personally and I wanted to see the War Chest for myself.”
Nelson led me into the bunker, his desk was the only personal item there, covered in meaningless security blueprints and fake surveillance reports.
“It’s perfect, isn’t it?” Nelson boasted, pulling out a chilled bottle of champagne. “No one can touch us here. The data is locked down, and we are completely secure.”
“It’s beautiful, Nelson,” I agreed, letting my gaze drift around the room, making sure to acknowledge the security cameras. I had a look of relief on my face.
We sat down, and Nelson poured the champagne. He began to give me details of the security protocols he had personally overseen. He spoke about alarms, encryption, and physical defence. He was completely comfortable and convinced that his work for me was cementing his place as my indispensable partner.
“The best part, Rita,” he leaned in, his voice dropping. “Is that the access logs for this bunker are completely separate from the main mansion system. Only I control them. If anything happens, the logs only show my entry and your current entry. No one can track our work here.”
Perfect, I thought, suppressing a grim smile. He was telling me that he had isolated himself perfectly. He had cut off his own line of retreat.
I played the role of the appreciative, vulnerable CEO. “That makes me feel so much safer, Nelson. With all the trouble from Richard and that awful email from Klark this morning, I needed to know I had one person I could absolutely rely on.”
His eyes softened with triumph. “You always will, Rita. We are a team. We are going to win this together.
The wine helped dull the sharp edge of the disgust I was feeling, but it did nothing to quiet the cold, calculating part of my mind. The time for business talk was over. It was time for the final surrender.
I moved closer to him, letting my hand rest lightly on his thigh. “Forget the White Whale for tonight, Nelson. Forget the board. I need you... I need the man who makes me forget all this stress.”
The desire in his eyes was overwhelming. He put down his glass, pulling me into his lap, he believed he deserved this reward.
“I can always give you that, Rita,” he murmured against my neck.
His touch was demanding and utterly different from the quiet, protective passion of Klark. Nelson’s movements were fast and focused on his own sense of victory. I forced myself to receive his touch and respond to his energy, turning the performance into a desperate act.
I closed my eyes and retreated to my inner fortress, focusing on the detailed reports Klark had sent me earlier, the precise timing of the stock crash, the name of Stanton’s CEO, the legal phrases Ms. Sharma would use in the counter suit.
Friday at noon. Counter suit 12:01 PM. Nelson will be ruined.
Every kiss was a step in the timeline. Every embrace was a data point. I was not a woman in love; I was a field agent gathering intelligence. I had to ensure he felt utterly successful, so he would not question the sudden, high profile activity of the next two days.
I whispered his name, forcing the sound of passion, while my mind was calculating the exact moment Klark would need to upload the final documents. I let him remove my clothes, feeling only the cold disconnect of my mind monitoring the event.
He was conquering the powerful woman he planned to own, proving his worth and I played the perfect victim, matching his passion just enough to avoid suspicion.
Afterward, Nelson was so satisfied. He lay back against the makeshift pillows on the floor, pulling me close against his chest. He was relaxed, secure, and completely vulnerable.
“That,” he whispered, kissing the top of my head, “was the perfect end to a successful week. We are going to win this, Rita. We are unstoppable.”
“I feel safe with you, Nelson,” I replied, the lie tasting like ashes in my mouth. I kept my voice soft and weak, just so he would keep seeing me as a woman dependent on his strength. This was my moment, the most important security check.
I lifted my head slightly, pretending to look at the ceiling, but my eyes darted around the bunker. I needed to know if he had any other hidden communications.
“Are you sure you shouldn’t be making a call?” I asked innocently. “Just to confirm the White Whale documents are still secure?”
“Everything is locked down,” Nelson yawned. “I don’t even have my personal phone here. I am completely off the grid. Just you and me.”
He was telling me the truth, he had left his personal phone, the one he used for his burner contacts at the mansion. He was physically and electronically isolated in the War Chest.
I pressed my face against his chest, listening to the slow, steady beat of his satisfied heart. I had him.
I stayed there for another two hours, pretending to sleep, enduring the weight of his arm around me. The moment his breathing deepened into true, heavy slumber, I slipped away.
I dressed silently, like I practiced my movements, then I gathered my purse, ensuring every glass, every napkin, and every loose hair was accounted for. I left no trace of the panic I felt.
I paused and looked at him sleeping. He looked handsome, calm, and utterly exposed. He was a monster, and he had been a fool.
I wasn’t angry, air only felt a chilling pity for his arrogance. He believed passion was a weapon he could use but he had forgotten that betrayal cuts both ways.
I walked to the door and approved my own exit on his private log. The steel door slid open with a quiet hiss and I stepped out into the pre dawn air.
As the heavy door locked behind me, I allowed myself one deep, shuddering breath of clean air. The air was cold, but it felt pure compared to the heavy atmosphere inside the bunker.
I drove back to the mansion immediately and called Klark’s emergency line the moment I was out of the War Chest’s electronic isolation zone.
“I’m out,” I confirmed, my voice tired but steady.
“Did you secure the information?” Klark asked, the concern in his voice felt like a welcome balm.
“I secured the timeline,” I replied. “He is isolated, and his confidence is absolute. He is expecting victory on Monday. We launch the attack on Monday.”
“Understood,” Klark confirmed. “Final preparations start now. Get some rest, Rita. You earned it.”
I hung up, pulling into the mansion garage. The horrible deception was over. Now, only the execution remained. I had survived the predator’s cage, now Monday was the day I burned it down.
