Chapter 62

Walter seemed to have regained some strength. He looked at Annabel with concern and said, “Why are you here? Go downstairs and get some rest. I’m fine.”

Annabel shook her head, helped Walter sit down, and then turned her sharp gaze to Victor and the other two. “If you care so much about Lillian, Dad, why not give her your own shares?

“Why force Grandpa? Or are you trying to split the family and drive him to his grave?”

Annabel’s words were not only cutting but downright ruthless. Even Walter couldn’t help but glance at her.

Beatrice and Lillian exchanged a quick look before turning their hopeful eyes to Victor. They didn’t care where the shares came from. It truly mattered if they ended up in their hands.

Victor, caught in the crossfire, looked visibly shaken. He opened his mouth to speak but ultimately clenched his teeth and said gently to Lillian, “Lillian, if Grandpa won’t give them to you, then I will share mine with you.”

“Thank you, Dad.” Lillian’s face lit up with a triumphant smile as she leaned against Victor’s arm.

With Annabel present, it wasn’t the right time to push further. Victor led Beatrice and Lillian out of the room.

As Beatrice and Lillian turned to leave, they both glanced at Walter.

‘It won’t be long before he kicks the bucket,‘ they thought, their eyes gleaming with greed. ‘Sooner or later, the White family will belong to us.

Seeing those unpleasant people finally leave, Annabel carefully locked the door before walking over to Walter. “Grandpa, let me check your pulse.”

Walter, knowing Annabel had some medical knowledge, extended his wrist with a doting smile. “Alright, Annabel, make sure to give me a thorough checkup.”

Annabel nodded, her expression serious as she focused intently, looking every bit like a seasoned traditional medicine practitioner.

After finishing with his left wrist, she gestured for Walter to offer his right one.

It took her a while before she finally withdrew her hand, her brows furrowing deeply. “Grandpa, can you show me the medicine you’ve been taking recently?”

Walter slowly got up, leaning on his cane. “Wait here for a moment.”

Annabel quickly stood up and followed him.

When they reached his room, Walter handed her the medicine. Annabel took it, inspecting it carefully before bringing it to her nose for a sniff.

In the end, she concluded that there was nothing wrong with the medicine itself.

But Walter’s health had been deteriorating in a way that didn’t make sense. If he had been taking the medicine as prescribed, his condition shouldn’t

have declined like this.

Annabel stood there in deep thought for a long moment before finally helping Walter sit down on the bed.

“Grandpa, you should rest now. If you trust me, starting tomorrow, you’ll only take the medicine I prepare for you,” she offered.

Walter nodded without hesitation, his trust in Annabel unwavering. “Okay, Annabel.” He didn’t hesitate at all, nor did he ask for the reason.

The next day, Annabel went out to buy medicine. She didn’t rely on anyone else and personally brewed it before taking it to Walter’s study.

Beatrice watched the entire process from start to finish, trying several times to step in, but Annabel shut her down every time.

As Annabel left with the medicine, Beatrice’s eyes gleamed with malice. She stormed back to her room and made a phone call. Sutton, Annabel is keeping a close eye on Walter’s medicine and meals.”

Beatrice gritted her teeth and added, “If this keeps up, there’s no way we can keep drugging him.”

Sutton hadn’t expected Annabel to catch on so quickly. He frowned, thinking for a moment. “Don’t worry. We’ll find another way.”

After a brief pause, he suddenly asked, “Isn’t Lillian’s wedding in two days?”

“Yeah, why? Did you think of something?” Beatrice’s tone was filled with anticipation.

Sutton picked up on her eagerness but deliberately avoided answering. Instead, he let out a sinister laugh. “Meet me at our usual spot this afternoon. I’ve got an idea.”

Beatrice’s cheeks flushed slightly, and she responded softly, almost shyly, “Alright.”

Lillian and Charles’s wedding party was far from a simple celebration; it was a day where schemes and secrets collided.

Held at a luxurious hotel, Beatrice, the bride’s mother, kept her gaze fixed on Annabel throughout the ceremony, her eyes sharp with suspicion, as if bracing for the chaos Annabel might unleash.

Annabel, unfazed by Beatrice’s scrutiny, sipped her champagne with an air of indifference, her confidence unshaken as she had already prepared a gift for the newlyweds.

The party stretched late into the night, and as Charles retreated to soak in the bath, Lillian finally had a moment to herself to sift through the pile of gifts.

There were jewels, ornaments, and bracelets.

Lillian was enthusiastically sorting through the presents when her hands paused on a small blue box. It was from Annabel, and a chill ran down Lillian’s back as dread crept into her heart.

Lillian recalled Annabel’s cryptic remark from a few days ago about giving her a grand gift for her wedding.

‘And this tiny box is supposed to be it?‘ Lillian wondered.

Lillian scoffed inwardly, dismissing the box as another petty trick. But as her fingers hesitated over the lid, a flicker of curiosity betrayed her resolve. She braced herself for the worst, imagining grotesque possibilities, a bloody fake hand, a terrifying spider, or disgusting cockroaches and rats. When she finally opened the box, her initial disdain turned into cautious intrigue.

“Huh? A USB drive?” Lillian’s breath hitched as she pulled out the USB drive. Frowning, she hesitated but eventually plugged the drive into her laptop. Inside, she found two folders, one labeled Lillian and the other Charles.

Lillian instinctively clicked on the folder with her name, and it was packed with all kinds of scandalous photos and videos.

It was not just of her and Charles, but also of the random men she’d messed around with when she was bored.

“What are you watching?” Charles’s voice came out of nowhere, startling Lillian so much that she slammed the laptop shut with one hand.

Her face turned pale, and she stammered nervously, “N–nothing.”

“Really?” Charles asked, his tone skeptical as he dried his hair with a towel. “It looked like you were watching something on the laptop just now.

Lillian quickly regained her composure, unplugging the USB drive without a hint of hesitation. She set the laptop aside, stood up, and leaned toward him with a teasing smile.

“Alright, fine. I admit it. I was looking up something kind of embarrassing,” she said.

“What?” Charles was curious.

Lillian’s cheeks flushed as she lowered her gaze. “I was checking if it’s okay to, you know, have sex during the first month of pregnancy”

Charles’s eyes lit up with interest, “And? Is it okay?”

Lillian playfully punched his chest, her voice light and flirtatious. “Of course it is.”

Before Lillian could say another word, Charles swept her off her feet and pinned her to the bed. The night unfolded in a haze of passion.

Late into the night, as Charles snored softly beside her, Lillian’s eyes snapped open.

She stared blankly at his sleeping face for a moment before quietly slipping out of bed and heading to the bathroom.

Sitting on the toilet, she stared at the USB drive for what felt like forever. Her fingers trembled as she held it, and then, with a sharp intake of breath, she tossed it into the toilet. The sound of it hitting the water echoed in the quiet bathroom.

She hadn’t dared to open the folder labeled Charles. It wasn’t just the fear of waking him; it was the fear of seeing something she couldn’t bear to face.

‘Annabel, you think you’re so clever, don’t you? Trying to mess with me and Charles? Keep dreaming,’ Lillian scoffed inwardly, her voice dripping with disdain. “That’s impossible. Charles is mine, forever and always.‘

As the water swirled and the USB disappeared, Lillian thought she’d flushed away the problem. But deep down, something had already begun to fester.

The next day, Charles and Lillian returned to the White family for their first visit after the wedding.

Early in the morning, the White household was a whirlwind of activity. Servants were rushing around like their lives depended on it. Victor was grinning so much it looked like his face might cramp, while Beatrice stayed composed, calmly directing the chaos.

Annabel came downstairs, took in the scene without a word, and headed straight to the dining room. But the dining table was no breakfast in sight.

Annabel frowned and asked, “No breakfast today?”

A maid, busy washing vegetables, paused and glanced at her. “Miss Annabel White, we’re all tied up with Miss Lillian White’s homecoming preparations. Maybe you could make something yourself?”

Annabel gave a faint, almost mocking smile. Seeing there wasn’t even a spot for her to cook, she grabbed her coat and decided to head out for breakfast. ‘I can skip a meal, but Grandpa needs to eat,‘ she thought.

When she returned, the living room was already bustling with energy.

Victor, his voice filled with pride and a touch of sentimentality, said, “Lillian, make sure to visit us often in the future.”

Lillian, her face glowing with happiness, nodded and handed over the gifts she had brought. “Dad, this is for you. And this one’s for Mom.”

As Lillian finished, her eyes landed on Annabel, who was standing not far away. Lillian froze for a moment, then quickly waved with a bright smile. “Annabel, I got you a gift, too. Come over and take a look.”
