Chapter 48
Chapter 48
Annabel thought of how Jonathan had pushed his boundaries time and time again, family. He probably does whatever he wants. Who could possibly control him?”
and she clenched her teeth in frustration. “He’s the heir to the Turner
Mason sensed something was off and was about to say something when Annabel cut him off. “Let’s focus on work first.”
They worked until nightfall, and Mason, ever the diligent one, offered to drive Annabel home. Annabel shook her head. “I need you to do something for
me.”
“What is it?” Mason asked.
A flash of determination crossed Annabel’s eyes. “Keep an eye on Carlos.”
Mason frowned. “You suspect him? He knows who Jonathan is. He wouldn’t dare try to harm the heir to the Turner family, would he?”
Annabel countered, “Is Jonathan dead?”
Mason was taken aback for a moment before realizing what she meant. “You’re saying Carlos’s goal wasn’t necessarily to kill Jonathan?”
Annabel remained silent because she was only speculating. Until everything was clear, anything was possible.
She decided to head back to the White residence first. Before leaving, Annabel bought a pair of crutches, not expecting anyone there to assist her with
her limited mobility.
As soon as Annabel entered, Victor predictably launched into a tirade. “Where have you been these past few days? Do you even know how to come back?”
Annabel noticed that Victor’s gaze had first fallen on her injured leg before he started yelling.
‘Hey, what a great father–seeing his daughter injured and not only showing no concern but also berating her,‘ she thought to herself. “I guess I’m not even as good as the cat Lillian keeps.’
Annabel’s eyes grew colder as she reminded him, “Dad, don’t you see my leg is injured?”
Victor’s face darkened. “So what? Who knows if you weren’t with that man-‘
Annabel frowned and cut him off. “Do you really want me to tarnish the White family’s reputation outside?” She paused, then scoffed. “Well, that’s going to disappoint you. I hurt my leg on set.”
Victor’s expression didn’t improve. “On set? What kind of play are you in? Can’t you just stay put and learn from Lillian, stay at home?” He stopped mid- sentence, his face changing dramatically as if he had remembered something.
Annabel continued with a smile. “Stay at home and what? Dad, are you joking? I can’t stay at home and have an affair with my sister’s fiancé.”
“Annabel, that’s enough,” a voice suddenly interjected. Charles emerged from the dining room, explaining, “Both Lillian and Twere framed. You have to
believe me.”
Annabel remained silent. Under the light, even without a smile, Annabel was breathtakingly beautiful. Charles wanted to tame her even more.
He stepped forward and reached out to help. “Let me carry you.”
Annabel pivoted on her crutches and evaded Charles, responding coldly, “No need, Mr. Shaw
Victor scolded, as if on purpose, “Mr. Shaw is offering you respect. He’s about to get engaged to Lillian. We’ll be family soon. Is this how you treat him?”
Charles’s eyes dimmed, his emotions unreadable. After a long while, he forced a smile and said, “Mr. White, don’t blame Annabel. I know she still harbors
resentment towards me.”
Chapter 48
Annabel suppressed the wave of nausea rising in her stomach, staring at Charles with dark, lifeless eyes that seemed to hold endless hatred.
Charles couldn’t help but shiver. Annabel enunciated each word clearly. “I do hate you.” She added silently in her mind, ‘I wish I could flay you alive.
Charles looked as if he saw murderous intent in Annabel’s eyes and was shocked. “Annabel?”
Annabel left, leaning on her crutches. “Carry on.”
Charles quickly recovered and chased after her. “Annabel, I want to talk to you alone.”
She stopped. “Let’s talk right here.”
Charles’s face showed a bit of hesitation, and he glanced at Victor, who immediately understood and stood up. “I have something to take care of. I’ll step outside and make a call.”
Once Victor left, Charles suddenly knelt down, his expression full of humility as he pleaded, “Annabel, can you give me one more chance?”
This time, Annabel didn’t dodge. She could handle his kneeling.
should I give you another chance? I’ve given you plenty already.”
Charles didn’t expect Annabel to remain unmoved. He gritted his
and reached out to embrace her. “Just one last chance.”
Seeing Annabel’s silence, he steeled himself, picked her up, and carried her to the guest room on the first floor, where he and Lillian often went.
Annabel struggled at first, then slapped him hard. “Let go, or you’ll regret it.”
Charles disregarded her threat. He already regretted saving Lillian. If he hadn’t, he wouldn’t have fallen into the trap, and he wouldn’t have been so humiliated in front of everyone.
He entered the room and threw Annabel onto the bed, her crutches falling to the floor.
Annabel’s eyes were cold and unyielding. “You can still stop now.”
Charles glanced at Annabel’s injured leg, wondering where she got her confidence. He knelt on the bed and reached for her clothes, thinking only of possessing her.
But as soon as he touched the collar of her shirt, Annabel grabbed his wrist and twisted it hard.
“Ah,” Charles screamed in pain, recoiling.
As soon as Charles took a step back, Annabel kicked him in his most vulnerable spot with her uninjured leg, using all her strength.
Charles let out a howl and collapsed to the floor, curling up in agony, beads of sweat pouring off his forehead.
Annabel rose with a cold laugh, pulled a silver needle from her pocket, and without effort, approached Charles and inserted it into an acupoint.
Charles’s mind felt like it had been struck, his sweat increasing as the pain became so intense he couldn’t even cry out.
Annabel removed the needle and said indifferently, “If you ever do this again, you can forget about keeping your eyes.”
Charles’s teeth chattered in pain as he forced out the words, trembling, “You, you dare-”
“What are you doing?” A scream suddenly rang out from the doorway.
Lillian burst in, immediately accusing Annabel, “Annabel, Charles is my fiancé now. How dare you seduce him so shamelessly? Are you that desperate for men?”
After speaking, she knelt down to help Charles, her voice filled with concern. “Charles, are you okay?”
Annabel looked at the two of them and let out a cold laugh. “You two really are a perfect match.”

Chapter 48
Lillian, furious, wanted to tear Annabel’s mouth apart. “What do you mean? It was clearly you who seduced Charles, and now you’re slandering him?”
Charles stared at Annabel, his eyes dark and menacing. He had truly shot himself in the foot today.
Annabel said nothing more and left, leaning on her crutches..
Lillian, seeing Charles’s miserable state, didn’t dare to stop her.
After Annabel left, Lillian looked at Charles with tearful eyes. “Charles, do you still have feelings for Annabel?”
Charles needed Lillian for many of his plans. He endured the pain and hugged Lillian. “The person I love has always been you. Now that we can finally get engaged, don’t ever doubt my feelings for you because of Annabel.”
Lillian was half–convinced but forced a smile. “Okay.”
Charles didn’t want to stay there any longer and struggled to stand up and leave. Lillian insisted he stay because he didn’t look well, but he refused. After seeing Charles off, Lillian stared into the night, stamped her foot in frustration, and soon a sinister smile crept onto her lips.
‘Annabel seems to have injured her leg. For me, that’s a good thing,‘ Lillian thought to herself.
