Chapter 48
**Adam’s POV **
Walking into the hospital this time, there are injured wolves and frantic nurses everywhere I look, the others must have returned from the fight at the old Copper Wolf lands. I make a beeline through the crowd upon spotting Ezra, he sits on the edge of a stretcher while nurse Yvonne wraps a bandage tightly around a gash on his leg that he seems completely unbothered by. “Ezra, what happened after I left?”
“After you left with Roman, most of Dark Claw pulled back and fled. We did a thorough check of the territory and couldn't find any other wolves being held prisoner, so we returned, with no casualties on our side, thank the Moon Goddess. Greta and Qiang have been taken into a more private ward to be patched up, both are a little skittish at the moment. The girl that attacked you is being held at a makeshift prison till you are ready to question her” his expression darkens at the mention of the small wolf that we brought back. I look down from his angry face to the wound on his leg, blood oozing through the white bandages.
“It’s just a scratch Adam, the little she-wolf is feisty” that is true, she was able to leave a pretty good claw mark down my back before I tackled her, but she also instantly submitted to me out of fear so whatever caused her to attack my head warrior is definitely worth questioning later.
“Did we bring in any other members of Dark Claw? What about the nearly unconscious woman in the cellar?” I remember seeing a woman coughing up her lungs, laying beside my mate. I had no idea if she was an enemy or another wolf fallen victim to that awful pack but my main focus was on saving Roman.
“Woman in the cellar? My warriors escorted Qiang out of there and had to pull Greta off someone's corpse but there was no one else there?” Ezra looks at me puzzled and I can see the worry in his face at possibly leaving behind an enemy or woman in need.
“Alpha Adam?”
Before I can continue grilling Ezra for information, the familiar voice of Dr. Pearce steals my attention. The minute she called out for me I run up to the exhausted looking doctor, Romeo and Anne following right behind me. “Roman is alive, he is being moved out of the O.R into the ICU. Roman is in pretty bad shape, very malnourished and covered in injurie-”
Dr. Pearce is cut off by Romeo's furious growl that causes everyone in the room to bare their necks in submission, including me. I lift my head to see his eyes are completely black and he is almost vibrating with fury. “With all due respect Alpha, I need you to calm down and reel in your wolf or I cannot inform you of your son’s condition let alone see him”
“Understood Doctor” the Alpha ground out as Anne latches her arms around him using her touch to calm him down which begins to work after a few moments, giving Dr. Pearce the opportunity to continue.
“The biggest concern that Dr. Muller and I faced was the wound from the object lodged in his chest. It missed his heart but it punctured his lung and caused serious blood loss. We will keep him sedated till his vitals stabilise. He is weak, but we are giving him blood and oxygen so if you can all control your wolves, you can come see him”
“We’re ready, please take me to my boy” Anne insists before we are led to a room where I see my little mate. Upon seeing him I let out a large exhale, not realising I had been holding my breath since Dr. Pearce called out to me in the E.R just minutes ago.
Surrounding his small body in the bed are several machines and IV’s all attached to him with wires and tubes. Fluids are being pumped into his arms, oxygen in his nose and an assortment of monitor stickers connected with cables stuck everywhere.
The heart monitor sings with a quiet but steady beeping, showing Roman’s weak but stable heartbeat. My mate looks so small and pale, I want to lay beside him and wrap him in my arms to keep him safe forever but I also fear that just touching him is enough to break him in this condition.
Dr. Muller stands at his bedside writing several notes down about Roman’s condition. Once completing his notes, the Doc waves us into the room since we all seem to simply be frozen upon seeing him. “Adam, I know you are concerned about hurting him but being near him will help give his wolf the strength they need to heal them”
I slowly approach, like he is a tower of cards, one breath away from tumbling down. I take a seat at Roman’s side and with the Doctors permission wrap my mates cold hand in my warm ones. Sticking out of my mate’s other hand is a cannula delivering a steady stream of blood into him, the hand I hold though is thankfully bare of any medical equipment meaning I can just focus on holding it as the mating bond ignites soft sparks where our skin touches.
Caked under his fingernails is mud and I know that as soon as he is strong enough I want to run my little mate a long warm bath to help wash away any remnants from his time away from me. Keeping my gentle grip on him I rest my head on the side of his bed.
I hear the doctors talking to Roman’s parents with a whole lot of medical jargon that I am too tired to process. Instead I just listen to my little mate’s soft breathing and I allow myself to close my eyes.
