Chapter 262 Who Are You Calling a Nouveau Riche!
Hearing this voice, Olivia's brow immediately furrowed.
She lowered her eyes slightly and turned around, unsurprised to see Emily.
Emily wore a bright pink gown, her makeup bold and striking, her hair done in soft, elegant waves. Behind her trailed a group of well-dressed young men and women, all of them staring straight at Olivia.
Seeing Olivia and Frederick standing together, Emily suddenly curved her lips into a smile.
She sauntered over with measured grace, her gaze flicking back and forth between Olivia and Frederick. Then she covered her mouth and laughed lightly. "Olivia, you really are something."
"One minute you're wrapped up with Brandon, the next you're hanging off another man. You really do keep yourself busy, don't you?"
Emily's eyes glittered with contempt. Her voice was naturally sharp, and now that she wasn't even bothering to lower it, everyone nearby could hear her clearly.
In an instant, the looks aimed at Olivia became even more disdainful and dismissive.
Olivia's expression cooled as she looked at Emily without a trace of warmth. "Emily, all you ever talk about is men. What, do you just lose your mind every time you see one?"
"Today is Hannah's birthday party, and she personally invited me here."
"Mr. York and I just happened to run into each other and exchanged a few words. But out of your mouth, it has turned into something filthy. So tell me, is there something wrong with me, or are you so experienced in this area that you assume everyone is doing the same thing?"
The smile on Emily's face instantly froze.
"Olivia, who are you calling 'experienced'! Who do you think you are!"
"I'm a daughter of the Dickson family! Do you think I'm like you, shamelessly scheming to marry into a rich family?"
Emily grew more agitated as she spoke. "Everyone knows exactly what you're up to, pretending to be all high and mighty. You're just someone who throws yourself at men wherever you go, plotting and scheming, trying to marry into money—you're a complete slut!"
Olivia gave a cold laugh, her gaze as sharp as a blade as she stared at Emily. "A daughter of the Dickson family?"
"You're just a useless person who only manages to get by because of your parents. I'm standing here on my own merits. What about you? Without the Dickson family, what would you be?"
"You!"
Emily's chest heaved with rage. Red with embarrassment, she shouted, "I'm still better than you! If you're so capable, let's compare who has more money!"
Olivia's look of contempt deepened, as if she were looking at an unreasonable fool. "Ms. Dickson, instead of wasting your time every day keeping an eye on me, this 'poor woman,' why don't you spend a little effort improving your manners?"
"People who don't know any better might think the Dickson family is just nouveau rich, desperate to show off."
"Olivia! Who are you callingNoveau riche!"
Emily was livid, her face flushed crimson, her eyes beginning to burn. Several of her hangers-on immediately couldn't stand it anymore and rushed forward to back her up.
A girl in a white dress said angrily, "Hey! You're way too arrogant. Everyone in our circle knows the Dickson family. How dare you talk back to Emily!"
Another guy frowned as well. "We're all here to celebrate Mrs. Robinson's birthday. Why are you being so aggressive?"
"Exactly, do you really think you can climb into the Robinson family..."
All at once, voices criticizing Olivia rose up around her.
Emily snorted coldly in satisfaction, glaring hard at Olivia.
But Olivia showed no fear at all. She swept her gaze over the people in front of her, a cold smile playing at the corners of her lips.
"Well, Ms. Dickson, it looks like you've trained a few very loyal dogs. The moment their master falls behind, they just can't help but start barking."
"Fuck!! Who the hell are you talking about!"
"Bitch, if I don't teach you a lesson today, you really won't know what fear is!"
"Damn it, Emily, I can't take this anymore!"
They were already a bunch of hot-headed young people, and now, having been called dogs to their faces by Olivia, they all exploded in anger.
Some even rolled up their sleeves, ready to start a fight.
Olivia watched them coldly with a sneer. "Want to fight? Fine. Let's see how many of you actually have the guts to do it."
Those who had been itching to act suddenly hesitated when they saw how calm Olivia was.
The ones in front exchanged glances. Seeing this, Emily immediately panicked. "What are you afraid of her for?"
"She's just a divorced woman. What's there to be scared of, you bunch of cowards!"
"Go on!"
Emily cursed and shouted, and a few people gritted their teeth and moved forward to shove Olivia.
But after only a few steps, a gentle, smiling voice rang out. "I think everyone should calm down."
"Ms. Smith is a guest personally invited by Hannah, and today is the Robinson family's party. Ganging up on a lady like this is rather undignified."
That one comment made several people falter again.
But some were still unconvinced. Seeing Frederick speak up, they simply turned their attack on him instead.
Someone immediately sneered, "Frederick, playing the gentleman, are we?"
"A bastard child like you thinks he's qualified to stand up for her? You really think you're something special?"
The surroundings fell silent for a moment.
Olivia glanced sideways at Frederick.
But Frederick's face showed no anger at all. His expression remained as gentle as ever, his attitude still neither humble nor arrogant. "Whether what I said is right has nothing to do with my background."
"In fact, today is Hannah's birthday celebration. If this really gets out of hand and you offend the Robinson family, which of you will be able to can afford the consequences?"
Everyone's expressions grew more serious.
Emily saw this and gave a cold laugh, her eyes suggestively flicking between the two of them.
"Well, well, Olivia, you really are something. In just a few minutes, you've got Frederick so bewitched that he actually dares to stand up for you!"
Frederick's brow furrowed slightly, his tone cooling. "Ms. Dickson, I'm only stating the obvious. I don't want to see anyone causing trouble at a birthday celebration. This has nothing to do with Ms. Smith."
Emily's anger flared. Just as she was about to retort, a mildly authoritative female voice came from behind. "Emily."
Everyone turned around.
Lillian was wearing a soft pink gown, her makeup dignified as she walked over quickly.
Taking in the chaotic scene, she kept a faint, proper smile on her face, but her eyes had already gone cold.
Emily didn't notice. The moment she saw Lillian, she immediately started to complain in a pitiful tone. "Mom, look at her..."
"Emily!"
Lillian raised her voice slightly, a hint of warning in it, cutting Emily off again.
Emily's eyes widened, her face instantly full of grievance. "What!"
Lillian maintained her polite smile, walked over, and reached out to gently fix a strand of her hair, lowering her voice. "This is the Robinson mansion, Mrs. Robinson's birthday party. Making such a scene—are you trying to embarrass us even more?"
Emily immediately protested in frustration. "But she..."
Lillian frowned, her hand tightening on Emily's shoulder in a hard squeeze. "Enough!"
