Chapter 636

Chapter 636

Lucas hadn't expected Eleanor to suddenly speak up.

A flash of surprise and helplessness crossed his eyes. It was too late to interrupt Eleanor now, so he could only listen as she lashed out at Wendy: "You call my husband in the middle of the night—is this the etiquette you brought back from abroad?"

Wendy's face went deathly pale.

She felt deeply humiliated.

Biting her lip, eyes reddening, she glared at the phone, overwhelmed by the crushing sense of failure—as if she'd been caught red-handed trying to seduce another woman's husband, with Eleanor witnessing it all.

Eleanor sounded furious as she continued on the other end: "Do you know what your behavior just now is called? If I released this recording, I guarantee the Myers Group's stock would plummet immediately. You'd be famous, all right."

Wendy took the verbal beating.

She dropped the act and laughed coldly. "With today's technology, even if you released the audio, what would it prove? I could easily say you synthesized my voice."

She wasn't the least bit intimidated by Eleanor's threats.

Nearly all her family's assets were overseas. Any scandal here wouldn't touch her father abroad.

Face flushed, Wendy shot back: "I just came to discuss something with Lucas. You're the one who doesn't trust him—sounds like you're the one with a guilty conscience."

Eleanor let out a cold laugh.

"Your shamelessness exceeds even my imagination."

She could tell Wendy was putting on a brave front, so she pressed on: "Clearly you enjoy the thrill of sneaking around, calling married men in the middle of the night. On that front, I bow to you—truly, shameless people are invincible."

Wendy's eyes filled with angry tears.

If Lucas weren't here, she could've argued back confidently, even turned it around to provoke Eleanor.

But in front of Lucas, she had to maintain her image.

She couldn't fight back. She could only dig her nails into her palms as she endured the verbal assault.

Finally, face burning with humiliation and indignation, she turned and left, disappearing from the room.

The door slammed shut with a resounding bang.

Lucas said helplessly to Eleanor: "I kept the call connected so you'd know what I was doing—that I wouldn't do anything to betray you. Why'd you have to scare her off like that?"

What if Wendy gave up now? All their planning would be for nothing.

But Lucas also knew Eleanor was probably jealous, so he didn't say more.

He teased her instead: "Now she's probably terrified of you."

Maybe Wendy would be too mortified to continue playing the other woman.

But Eleanor just smiled confidently and said, "That only proves you don't understand women."

"What?"

Eleanor continued: "You think anyone with a normal sense of shame would give up pursuing you now. But I guarantee she won't see it that way."

After all, if Wendy thought like that, she never would've followed Lucas back to the country in the first place, knowing full well he had a wife.

For Wendy, normal shame and logic didn't apply.

Lucas still didn't understand. "You mean Wendy won't give up?"

"Right," Eleanor said with absolute certainty. "She'll interpret my behavior her own way, and most likely, it'll only make her fight harder."

Though Lucas didn't understand how Eleanor reached this conclusion, he said nothing more. He trusted Eleanor's judgment, so he'd maintain the same pace as before.

Waiting for the day Wendy couldn't hold back anymore.

After leaving, Wendy vented by smashing things in her room, sitting on the bed fuming: "That bitch! How dare she say that to me—who does she think she is?"

Her eyes reddened with rage.

But her expression showed only anger and resentment—not a trace of shame over her own behavior.

Just as Eleanor predicted.

Rather than feeling ashamed at being exposed and giving up her pursuit of Lucas, she became even more determined.

Wendy murmured to herself: "Eleanor attacked me like that today because she's going crazy with jealousy. She must sense Lucas's favoritism toward me, so she's afraid I'll steal him away."

There was no other explanation for why the usually composed Eleanor would suddenly lash out at her.

The only reason was that Eleanor was jealous.

This realization excited Wendy.

Far from being ashamed, she felt proud. The more Eleanor lost her composure, the more it proved she was close to winning Lucas over.

A smug smile curved Wendy's lips.

She turned to share the good news with Clifford: "Dad, you'll never guess—Eleanor's so afraid I'll steal Lucas that she's already staking her claim in front of me."

Clifford was thrilled by this development.

He praised Wendy approvingly: "Excellent. Keep up the momentum. Once you land Lucas, our business will reach new heights."

"I want to..."

Wendy revealed her true agenda, wheedling to Clifford: "But I need one final push. There's no way I can get Lucas to divorce Eleanor and give up his interests on my own."

Clifford's expression wavered.

"Dad!" Wendy kept up her pleading. "You're not going to let us fail when we're so close, are you?"

Eleanor returned to the company to focus on her work.

She continued overseeing her divorce and asset division. The company was in turmoil.

The rumors that had been suppressed once before were flying again, with everyone watching the movements from Eleanor's and Lucas's offices.

Everyone felt they'd divorce any second.

This time the divorce definitely wasn't just a rumor.

The oppressive atmosphere permeated the company. Even those walking through it seemed anxious. Many people privately approached David, hoping to get inside information about Eleanor.

As more people came seeking information, even David himself couldn't help overthinking things.

Others might not know the full picture.

But David had accompanied Lucas on that business trip. He'd witnessed the 'chance encounter' with Wendy clearly, and just as clearly, he'd seen the increasingly serious cold war between Lucas and Eleanor since their return.

Finally, David couldn't hold back any longer. He asked Eleanor: "Eleanor, this divorce situation is blowing up. Should we issue another denial?"

Eleanor didn't answer directly.

She only instructed David to focus on his job.

Hearing that, David panicked—wasn't she basically admitting the divorce was real?

David grew more anxious, wanting to probe Eleanor's thoughts further: "Is it really because of Wendy?"

He felt even more regretful.

If he'd known Wendy would cause such chaos, he should've kept a much closer eye on Lucas during that overseas trip!
