Thalia's POV
I tipped the edge of my glass and took another sip, a few more and I would need to reach for my fifth glass for the night, there was no stop in anytime soon I would need it to stomach everything from the life-sized pink and blue teddy bears to intricate ribbons weaving across the hall, there were also blue and pink cup cakes and other snacks to choose from.
Guests that were high ranking wolves were discussing amongst themselves what the gender of the child would be, some making hushed bets.
I overheard one particular conversation that caught my attention.
"By the goddess the alpha really went all out for his friend didn't he?" A man said leaning down to his friend, a woman with curly blonde hair, she nodded in definite agreement.
"Yes I remember that Luna didn't even have a gender reveal herself, did she?"
The man scrunched his face as if he was deep in thought.
"I heard that she did, it was a small private affair but I doubt it could hold a candle to this, it-"
They could sense me glaring at them from the corner of my eyes and had enough sense to get out of my sight before I would do something that all of us would end up regretting tonight. To say I was in a horrible mood would be the understatement of the century just moments ago my twins alpha blood had their shifting ceremony in the small attached hall that was a miniature to this bigger one it was attended by only family and a few close associates done within an hour it was a kind of ceremony that even omega's would laugh at because this was supposed to be a big event for them a turning point that everyone looked forward to they had become real and official members of the pop and instead of being a celebration that's whipped the whole place it was treated like an after thought.
All in all while my kids were struggling and their pain was frowned upon, everyone made is circle around them and it was my mother holding me back from going to them holding them, I closed my eyes but their screams still penetrated my ears and I wish I could take some of their pain away from them but rather than being by my side supporting me through this moments the only thing Varian did was constantly check his watch, their shifting ceremony was scheduled to be held 2 hours before the gender revealed and it was like he couldn't spare the time for our children he wasn't moved by their suffering in fact it looked like he was just inconvenience.
Finally they were done transforming and a trained Elder came to them rubbing a special ointment on their bodies before they were taking to their room where they would spend the next week recovering from the strain on the small bodies it was rare for wolves to transform so early but not totally uncommon for alpha wolfs, my chest swelled with pride when I saw their wolves but as I looked towards both my husband and my in-laws they seemed almost indifferent, only my mother shared both my anxiety and joy bundled together.
We were supposed to escort our kids to the room but instead of that variant came over lowering his voice so that nobody else would hear him and he whispered in my ear; "so I just got a mind link from Shelly, she's feeling a little tired and wants to just start the gender reveal so that she can get it over with quickly and return back to resting."
If I didn't want to follow my children and check up on them one more time in their room I would have probably yelled at him asking between me and Shelly who was his friend and who was his mate but instead I just nodded with grudgingly and told him to do what he wanted, was a hint of coated bitterness in my voice and he either missed it completely or decided not to even acknowledge it at all.
He was out before I could blink twice and after I stayed in my kids room with their unconscious body seeing it healed and reform itself by deciding to give them the space to heal.
I thought I would get some rest but that was when he came to my room and told me that Varian expected me to reveal something about me needing to show support to my friend.
"I'll be there in a minute,"I said behind closed teeth.
That was how I ended up coming to the main hall seeing how elaborately and thoughtfully the decorated variant had been involved from the very beginning but when it came to our kids he threw all the responsibility on my lap and arrived only physically present while his mind remained on this gender reveal.
Whispers were intensifying and it's not like I could glare at every single person here. It was Varian that was making this difficult for me, I just hoped that this would be over soon.
Finally it was time for them to cut the cake and reveal what gender the baby was. There were games, small snacks and plenty of conversation. Many people worked over to Shelly to congratulate her Varian by her side, looking as proud as the father of the child would be if they were here.
Every one more or less ignored me, but I swallowed it counting down the minutes when this torture would finally be over that was when she slid the knife into the cake and her jaw hits the floor.
"I can't believe this. "She said out loud getting all teary eyed, both she and Varian lifted the single slice together on one knife and Varian announced with a booming voice loud enough to envelope the entire Hall.
"It's a boy!"
