Chapter269
Geoffrey had an excellent memory, once told about something, he could remember it.
Sometimes Maureen wondered how someone like him could have lost his
memory.
Seeing him so obedient and gentle now, he truly felt like a completely different person. Maureen was dazed when Geoffrey took her hand, the room temperature seeming to rise.
Geoffrey rested against her back, almost embracing her from behind, his Adam’s apple bobbing slightly.
Feeling his breath on the nape of her neck, Maureen snapped back to reality and pulled her hand away. “Alright, go shower.”
She fled the room like escaping danger.
Back in bed, Maureen’s cheeks burned. She shut her eyes as shower sounds drifted from the bathroom.
She drifted into sleep.
In her dream, someone held Maureen tightly. Exhausted, she struggled to open her eyes but couldn’t.
Early morning light fell on her face as Maureen slowly awoke to an empty bedside.
She entered the living room finding Geoffrey already dressed and calmly working.
Breakfast waited on the table.
Maureen ignored the food, curious about Geoffrey’s recent projects.
She walked behind Geoffrey and saw charity donation event plans replacing business proposals on his laptop.
“Is this what your job entails?”
Maureen asked.
“Yeah, Alex arranged it.”

Geoffrey answered without changing his expression.

Maureen thought about how Geoffrey used to just review other people’s proposals, but now he was actually making one himself. How unpredictable life was.
“Why don’t you tell Heather and have her assign you some work, or…”
Before Maureen could finish, Geoffrey cut her off: “Reenie, from now on we have nothing to do with the Sutton Family. You and I are family.”
Maureen choked up at his words.
Not moved, she said: “The reason I came back to live in Small Town is because the doctor said Zoe’s health is poor, and she might not make it through this Christmas Season.
If Zoe leaves, I’ll still choose to leave this place. Sooner or later we’ll split up. You and I aren’t family.”
“You and I aren’t family…”
Geoffrey’s heart ached. He thought after all this time together, Maureen had given up on divorce, but she still hadn’t.
“I’m going to work. You should head back early.”
With that, Maureen left the room without eating breakfast.
Today she was going to meet the mysterious person Betty had told her about.
Outside the hotel.
By the roadside, a man and a woman stood in front of a black car.
The man wore a black overcoat, radiating stern coldness, while the woman presented a stark contrast in her adorable padded jacket and combat boots, clutching two large bags of Soup Dumplings.
Betty popped Soup Dumplings into her mouth one by one, offering some to Justin: “Hey, want one?”
Justin watched her chipmunk–like cheeks puffing like a rabbit’s as she chewed: “No, thanks.”
“Too bad. If you won’t eat, how can BOSS and I finish all these?”
Before Justin could reply, she stuffed two more dumplings into her mouth.

Under a minute later, one entire bag of Soup Dumplings vanished.
“Can’t waste food. Guess I’ll help BOSS eat a few more.”

Justin figured if Maureen took much longer, breakfast would be gone.
“BOSS!”
Betty spotted Maureen first, waving eagerly.
Maureen strode over immediately, taking the dwindling bag of Soup Dumplings.
“Thanks.”
“Since when are we formal? Come on, get in. We’re meeting the client.”
Betty swung the car door open for her.
Justin took the driver’s seat and started the engine.
Betty didn’t know the mysterious client’s identity, only that he was loaded–their meeting place was the Club Lounge at Chaster Club.
Maureen naturally couldn’t follow them to the same floor in that kind of place.
“We’ll wait for you in the car, okay?”
Private room at Chaster Club’s top floor.
A hand pushed open the window, observing everything below.
“Sir, she’s here.”
The speaker was Alex’s secretary Lisa. She glanced toward Alex sitting alone playing chess inside the private room. “But it’s not Ms. Ramirez.”
Alex’s fingers paused mid–air, the black chess piece hovering. “She still refuses to see me?”
Days earlier, when he’d sent Adrian to find Maureen only for her not to show, he’d already known the outcome. Yet he remained unwilling to accept it.

During his time abroad, every waking moment not clouded by other concerns had been consumed by his investigation into Maureen.
Knowing she was composer Maureen, he’d gone to such lengths just to catch a glimpse of her.
Lisa closed the window and approached.
“Ive learned the company recently wanted Ms. Ramirez’s compositions too. But she only sends her assistant, remaining behind the scenes herself.”
As they spoke, Betty was ushered in by a server.
Her eyes immediately landed on the man in the inner private room–playing chess with stern features and refined demeanor.
