Chapter217
“I’ll bring her back to Small Town right away.”
“I have projects to handle domestically soon. I can escort her.”
James, aware of Geoffrey’s condition, added, “The children want to come back too.”
Once Zoe returned, Maureen wouldn’t feel safe leaving the children abroad.
Geoffrey had lost his memory and sight–he likely wouldn’t pursue them.
“Then please bring both children back with you.”
“Okay.”

That night, Maureen couldn’t sleep.
Ever since hearing about Zoe, she kept recalling her childhood.
Truthfully, Zoe had been more like a mother to her than Noelle ever was–that meticulous care held no difference from maternal love.
By dawn, Maureen was already up, preparing toiletries for the elderly woman and two children before heading out to buy groceries.
She purchased clothes and shoes from a boutique, arranged everything neatly, and waited for their arrival.
At noon, Maureen went to pick them up at the airport.
Since their abrupt parting overseas, seeing Zoe now with fully silver hair and a hunched back struck Maureen deeply.
Yet Zoe showed no sign of strangeness, simply handing Maureen a bag of snacks.
“Reenie, these are all your favorites from abroad.”
Maureen stared at the assortment of treats inside.

She wondered how Zoe had found these during her time overseas without speaking any foreign languages.
Swallowing the lump in her throat, Maureen forced a smile.
“You’re so thoughtful, Zoe.”
Maureen embraced her tightly.
Nearby, Gareth stayed with the two little ones, not interrupting them.
After returning to the rental home, Zoe and the children rested in the living room.
Gareth told Maureen that Zoe’s treatment was no longer beneficial, and staying in the hospital would only prolong her suffering. It’d be better for her to spend time with family.
Maureen listened silently, her throat burning with a tearing pain that stole her words.
“Stay with her during this time.”
Maureen nodded. “Mm.”
“I’ve spoken to the landlord. We’ll move out tomorrow and return to Small Town as a family.”
Gareth’s gaze lingered on her pale face. He swallowed his questions about Geoffrey, asking instead: “How have you been lately?”
Though Maureen suspected Justin might’ve told him everything, she answered:
“I’d been suing for divorce when Geoffrey and I had a car accident.”
“He was severely injured–blinded and amnesiac. The court ruled against me.‘
Gareth fell silent, struck by fate’s cruelty.
“And now you two…‘
“It’s completely over. He says he’ll never bother me again.”
Geoffrey kept his word. Since leaving the courthouse with her, he hadn’t contacted Maureen again.
He never mentioned Maureen to anyone around him.
Pearl stood pitch–dark in the dead of night.

Crash!
Glass shattered across the floor.
A bodyguard rushed toward the door. “Mr. Sutton, are you alright?”
“Go away!”
The icy command sent the bodyguard retreating instantly.
Geoffrey stood in the dining room, blood streaming down his hand from a glass shard’s cut.
As if numb to the pain, he fumbled to turn on the faucet, letting icy water rush over the wound.
These past few days, he’d broken countless objects and taken several falls.
Fortunately, he’d memorized every corner of the villa and no longer stumbled blindly.
Only when the bleeding stopped did he shut off the water and leave the kitchen.
Alone, he walked to the living room and sank into the sofa.
In his fading memories, Maureen would wait here for him to return from work.
Footsteps echoed outside. Assuming the bodyguard had returned, Geoffrey snapped impatiently, “Get lost!”
But it was Heather who pushed the door open.
Frowning at the suffocating darkness, she asked, “Why aren’t the lights on?”
After speaking, she noticed Geoffrey sitting in the room and realized she’d said the wrong thing.
Since when does a blind man need lights?
The room felt icy without heating. Heather walked in, turned on the heater, and approached Geoffrey.
“Geoff, you’ve mostly recovered now. I’ve found you some young ladies lately–all wonderful girls who’ve admired you since childhood.”
“Could you meet them tomorrow?”

These daughters are barely twenty.
Youthful beauties, crucially without physical flaws.
Heather had met cach–all docile and easily controlled.
Geoffrey’s eyes turned glacial: “Didn’t you hear me?
Get out.”
His command made Heather jump.
“How dare you speak to your mother like this?”
Even before amnesia, he’d been difficult, but never shouted at her.
Now with lost memories, he actually yelled.
Geoffrey’s expression remained frozen.
“Respect is earned. I won’t meet your candidates. Leave.”
Heather had assumed his amnesia would make him more agreeable.
Instead, he only showed patience toward Maureen–to others, his tongue grew sharper and temper fiercer.
“Geoff, do you realize the company’s in chaos right now?
You need your own son to keep those distant relatives in line.”

Seeing Heather wouldn’t leave and kept chattering, Geoffrey stood up and headed upstairs.
