As she stepped through the snow toward him, she activated her recorder.
“What do you want to discuss?”
“Get in the car.”
Geoffrey opened the passenger
door.
Maureen refused, taking a step back.
“We’ll talk right here.”
“I said get in!”
Geoffrey’s voice rose sharply.

cold?”
Geoffrey walked around and settled into the driver’s seat, starting the engine.
The car cruised slowly down the road.
Geoffrey maintained stony silence.
Unsettled by the tension, Maureen asked, “Can we pull over?”
Geoffrey accelerated without responding.
Maureen’s hands clenched. With icy roads still covered in snow, his reckless driving courted disaster.
“Geoffrey, stop the car!”
The man ignored her, speeding up instead.
Maureen stared at the scenery whipping past the car window, her heart pounding: “Are you trying to kill us?

I’m scared!”
The car screeched to a sudden halt, throwing Maureen forward until her seatbelt snapped tight.
Geoffrey’s body shielded hers as he pinned her in his arms.
“Now you know fear?”
“Didn’t I tell you to come home when you’re done playing games?
?!”
Maureen glared at him, the corners of her eyes blazing red. She raised her hand to strike, but he intercepted her wrist.
“You lunatic!” she spat.
Geoffrey tightened his grip until her bones protested. “Drop the lawsuit.
Pain shot through Maureen’s arm, but she clenched her jaw. “I won’t. This reckless driving just proves you’re a violent madman.
She deliberately provoked him, hoping her hidden recorder would capture more evidence.
Instead, Geoffrey crushed his mouth against hers, kissing her with bruising force as he growled: “Correct. I’m insane. Why else would I want you–a woman who cheated during our marriage and had another man’s child?”
Geoffrey was saying harsh things while kissing Maureen, wishing he could keep her
confined in his arms forever.
“What will it take for you to drop the lawsuit?”
“Tell me what you want, just drop the lawsuit!”
Geoffrey wasn’t afraid of losing the case; he just couldn’t afford to lose.

If the court granted their divorce, he wouldn’t have any excuse to force her to stay.
“Just name it, I’ll give you anything I have!”
He repeated over and over.
Maureen struggled to avoid him.
Seeing her silence, Geoffrey pinned her firmly against his chest, his voice low: “Did Gareth contact you?”
Maureen blocked him: “I don’t want anything…”
Geoffrey didn’t believe her.
He just kept holding Maureen without loosening his grip.
The car sat quietly by the roadside as heavy snow kept falling without pause.
Outside, the sky gradually darkened. Geoffrey wouldn’t budge, and whenever Maureen shifted slightly, he’d hold her tighter.
Maureen lowered her eyes: “Geoffrey, have you fallen for me?”
She’d asked before without being sure, but now she felt almost certain.
Geoffrey froze, looking down into Maureen’s clear eyes, his Adam’s apple bobbing slightly.
While he stayed silent, Maureen inched closer to him.
“You don’t need to answer me.”
Maureen gave a bitter smile. “I don’t expect your affection anymore. Just let me go.”
“Let’s get divorced, okay?”
“I’m begging you, alright?”
Thorns seemed lodged in Geoffrey’s throat, every breath felt painful.
“No.”
Disappointment flooded Maureen’s eyes as she fell silent.

when she still loved him.
Exhausted, Maureen eventually fell asleep against Geoffrey’s chest.
Staring at her peaceful form, Geoffrey momentarily considered vanishing with her–perhaps that’d keep her by his side forever.
His phone’s ringtone shattered the thought.
Wayne’s message flashed: “Boss, found Tyler. He’ll take the divorce case. Guaranteed win.”
Geoffrey deleted the text, holding Maureen tighter as relief washed over him.
A faint noise startled Maureen awake. She blinked, realizing they remained in Geoffrey’s car.
“May I go home now?”
Without a word, Geoffrey draped his coat over her and started the engine.
Maureen watched in disbelief, stunned by his sudden change.
After Geoffrey dropped her off at Katherine’s place, he watched her get out of the car and disappear from sight before driving away.
After leaving, he immediately called Wayne: “Tell Tyler, if I lose the lawsuit, he can forget about working in the legal field.”
After Maureen returned, Katherine asked if she had obtained any strong evidence.
She briefly recounted what had happened that day.
“It seems Geoffrey is still emotionally unstable, so we can use that to our advantage.”
As the two were thinking about the divorce, Katherine had no idea that her first love would soon return to Karaville.
That night, Maureen slept with Katherine.
She called her two children: “Jacob, Ethan.”
“Mommy, where are you?”
Jacob could tell at a glance that she wasn’t at the usual place.
