“Investigate.”
“Yes.”
Geoffrey reached for a cigarette but stopped, remembering how Maureen had recoiled from the smell when he held her days earlier, visibly nauseated.
“She should be over it by now?”
Geoffrey questioned Wayne.
Wayne was at a loss, unsure how to respond.
How would he know if Maureen still held a grudge?
Besides, Geoffrey’s mistreatment of her spanned years–how could a few gifts make up for years of mistreatment?
When Wayne remained silent, Geoffrey took it as confirmation.
Finally, night arrived. Seeing the lights off in Maureen’s room, he didn’t use a key but climbed over the balcony instead.
Maureen slept fitfully. Pregnancy, the stress of being away, and separation from Steven and Jacob gave her constant nightmares.
Suddenly, a large hand pulled her into an embrace, holding her tight.
Maureen slept lightly and jolted awake instantly.
“Who?!”
Her eyes strained in the darkness, unable to identify the figure. She bit down hard on the
man’s hand.
Geoffrey frowned slightly but didn’t release her, his voice dropping to a whisper: “It’s me.”
Hearing the familiar voice, the tension coiled in Maureen’s mind finally cased.

“Geoffrey? How did you get in? Get out!”
Geoffrey hadn’t come all this way to leave.
“You’ve been angry long enough. Stop being difficult, alright?”
“I’ve told you many times, I’m not being difficult,” Maureen retorted coolly, staring at him.
Geoffrey’s hand, now bleeding from her bite, still held her firmly against him, a dull ache spreading through his chest.
“Maureen, this is my first time being someone’s husband.”
And my first time truly loving someone.
Maureen’s heart suddenly tightened.
He was new to being a husband, and wasn’t she equally new to being his wife?
Her eyes icy, Maureen said: “Geoffrey, go back to Karaville. Don’t make me resent you.”
Geoffrey stiffened while holding her, his voice hoarse: “I won’t go back. I’ve got all the time and patience in the world.”
Maureen grew more confused, tilting her head to look at him.
“Haven’t you always disliked me?
Why cling to me now?”
Geoffrey’s throat constricted.
“Because I never considered divorce!”
After speaking, he threw off the blanket and stood up.
“Find me whenever you need anything. From now on, I’m your landlord.”
Maureen didn’t even notice Geoffrey’s departure. She contacted her previous landlord that very night, only to learn the property had been sold.
She had no choice but to arrange for an electronic lock replacement.

Coincidentally, that producer was in town and scheduled to meet Maureen today.
She prepared early, determined to secure this deal.
After paying Geoffrey, her cash flow was tight. Closing this partnership would bring a significant annual income boost.
They agreed to meet at the nearest five–star hotel. The representative from the other company was from Los Angeles–reportedly wealthy and fond of being addressed by his Chinese name, Mr. Dragon. He wore a tailored suit, sporting blond hair and blue eyes, with a towering frame.
“Ms. Shi?”
The man was both surprised and delighted to find the rumored renowned composer was a young woman.
Maureen hadn’t expected him to speak Chinese. “That’s me.
Mr. Dragon, a pleasure.”
She extended her hand for a handshake.
He clasped it firmly, but his gaze turned peculiar.
Just as Maureen tried to withdraw her hand, he tightened his grip, staring intently. “I adore Oriental women. You’re absolutely stunning!”
Having lived abroad for years, Maureen was no stranger to such advances. She calmly but forcefully freed her hand.
“Perhaps we should focus on business first.”
Mr. Dragon chuckled, settling into his seat as he ran his tongue over his lips.
“Are all you Oriental women so.” he paused, searching for the word, “…conservative?”
Maureen’s eyes cooled. “Are all you Western men so ill–mannered?”
At this, Mr. Dragon roared with laughter, his imposing figure suddenly crowding her space.
“Spend one night with me, and we’ll sign the contract. What do you say?”
Maureen’s face flushed red with anger, grabbed her bag and was about to leave.
