Chapter 15 Lifting a Stone Only to Drop It on One's Own Foot
Candice was furious!
Brandon calling the police was one thing, but getting reporters involved? That was crossing a line.
If this got out, it would be nothing short of a disaster for her reputation.
Candice gritted her teeth. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot!
At this point, she had no choice but to treat him, whether she wanted to or not. The last thing she needed was this kind of "publicity."
It was just treating a patient, after all.
Once she finished the treatment, they'd complete the transaction and never have to cross paths again.
Besides, ten billion dollars in medical fees? That money was too good to pass up.
She could buy Yasmin that luxury mansion she'd been eyeing!
With that thought, Candice snatched Knox's phone and plastered on an ice-cold smile. "I've reconsidered. Why don't we discuss your treatment options after all?"
Knox raised an eyebrow. "Didn't Dr. Mandy just say it couldn't be treated?"
Candice maintained her smile. "It can be treated. With the right price, I can treat any condition. I'm just quirky that way. I work according to my mood, and my mood has improved considerably in the last few minutes."
With that, she stormed into the medical room to face Brandon directly.
She'd been hiding her identity this whole time, but now that she was entering the room, she wasn't afraid of being exposed anymore.
Brandon remained seated on the sofa, his posture rigid and formal.
His eyes couldn't see, but his hearing was exceptionally sharp.
He could tell that Dr. Mandy had approached and was standing right in front of him.
Brandon's expression remained cold as he lifted his gaze in Candice's direction, his presence intimidating. "So now you can treat me?"
Candice didn't notice anything unusual about him, but his tone irritated her. She clenched her jaw and said, "Yes! Unless you're already dead, I can treat you!"
Brandon had lost faith in her medical skills after her earlier behavior.
He scoffed. "Don't make promises you can't keep. You'll only embarrass yourself."
Candice smiled thinly. "I appreciate the concern, but that won't be necessary."
As she spoke, she unceremoniously took a seat, instantly switching to professional mode. "Enough small talk. Give me your medical records and test results, and tell me about your current condition."
Brandon didn't answer. He simply lifted his hand, signaling to Knox.
Knox didn't need further instruction. He quickly brought over the prepared documents. "Dr. Mandy, here's everything."
Candice took the medical records and began flipping through them while listening to Knox's report. "Mr. Obelon can't see..."
Wait, what?
Had she heard correctly?
Candice paused, instinctively looking in Brandon's direction. "Did you say he can't see?"
How was that possible?
If she remembered correctly, his eyes had been perfectly fine when they'd met at the club last night!
He'd been quite intimidating then, hadn't he?
Brandon's expression remained impassive. He showed no intention of explaining himself to Candice's questioning.
Candice stared at him for a moment and noticed that Brandon's gaze did seem unusual.
Skeptical, she waved her hand in front of Brandon's face.
Brandon couldn't see it, but he sensed something approaching him. His innate vigilance made him frown.
In the next second, he swiftly grabbed Candice's wrist. "What are you doing?"
Her skin felt smooth and delicate under his grip, with a strangely familiar texture.
Brandon didn't dwell on it, his expression growing colder.
Candice hadn't expected such a strong reaction and jumped in surprise. "I thought you couldn't see? How did you grab my hand so accurately?"
Brandon's face darkened as he answered, "My eyes don't work, but my other senses are perfectly fine."
Candice didn't know how to describe her feelings in that moment.
She never would have guessed that Brandon actually had a physical problem, and with his eyes of all things?
Candice was well aware of Brandon's identity. As the head of the Obelon Group, if people discovered he couldn't see, it would cause a sensation and potentially serious consequences.
But she realized that if Brandon needed treatment for his eyes, it might work in her favor.
At least during treatment, he wouldn't know who she was!
With that thought, Candice regained her composure. She pulled her hand back and tried to keep her voice steady. "Tell me the details."
Knox nodded and explained, "Mr. Obelon was the target of an assassination attempt several years ago. He was poisoned, and while his life was saved, his body suffered lasting effects."
"Later, his vision began to show obvious problems. He experiences occasional temporary blindness. We've had him checked for all possible conditions at various hospitals, but the results show nothing wrong."
"No injuries, no detectable problems, and after brief periods of blindness, his vision returns to normal. Because this condition is so rare, hospitals haven't dared to perform any surgery."
Candice nodded, surprised by Brandon's condition.
Vision loss typically stemmed from a few common issues—retinal problems, other eye conditions, or issues with the optic nerve.
But Brandon's eyes themselves showed no problems, yet he experienced blindness with no discernible cause.
To be honest, Candice found Brandon's condition intriguing.
That was partly why she'd casually agreed to Gray's request earlier.
However, she couldn't make any definitive judgment about Brandon's blindness yet, so she remained silent.
After listening to Knox's explanation, she quietly reviewed the case file and various test results.
Knox saw how seriously she was studying the documents and didn't dare interrupt, though his heart remained in suspense.
He believed that Dr. Mandy truly possessed medical skill.
Brandon had seen all kinds of specialists with no good results. Now, Dr. Mandy was their only hope.
