Chapter 13 The Patient... Is the Ex-Husband?

Chapter 13 The Patient... Is the Ex-Husband?

When Candice saw Elijah's tears, her heart felt like something was tugging at it.

How could he start crying so suddenly?

She couldn't bear to see children's tears. Whenever Yasmin cried at home, her heart would soften, and apparently, it was the same with Elijah.

Candice felt a wave of helplessness inside. She had no choice but to tell Elijah, "I really do have work to take care of, but how about this—I'll give you my contact information, and you can message me to chat whenever you want. Would that work?"

"Really?"

Elijah's eyes were still red, but he had stopped crying, and his gaze brightened with excitement.

Seeing an expression almost identical to Yasmin's, Candice found it even harder to refuse him.

She nodded and said, "Of course it's true. I wouldn't lie to you."

"Great!"

Elijah instantly cheered up, his appetite returning.

Watching him, Candice couldn't help but smile.

After lunch, she gave Elijah her contact information.

"This is my phone number. You can also add me on WhatsApp. When you get home, be good and listen well. No more running away from home, okay? It's dangerous out there, understand?"

"I know!" Elijah nodded obediently.

Afterward, Candice instructed her driver, "Theo, please take him home."

"Right away."

After watching Elijah get into the car and leave, Candice finally hailed a taxi to the medical research facility.

Brandon and Knox had arrived earlier.

While waiting, they hadn't stopped searching for Elijah's whereabouts.

Around two in the afternoon, Beau called Brandon. With an excited tone, he informed him, "Mr. Brandon Obelon, Mr. Elijah Obelon has returned home!"

Hearing this news, Brandon asked with concern, "How is he? Is he hurt?"

Beau replied happily, "No, sir, don't worry. He's perfectly fine, nothing happened to him."

Thank goodness!

Brandon finally relaxed and said in a calmer voice, "Noted. We'll discuss this when I return. Keep an eye on him and don't let him run off again."

"Yes, sir. Rest assured, we will guard Mr. Elijah Obelon properly this time."

Beau immediately accepted the order.

After putting away his phone, Brandon finally had the peace of mind to ask Knox, "Has that medical expert arrived yet?"

Knox checked the time and said, "Should be any minute now. Don't worry, sir. Our people will escort them in as soon as they arrive."

"Good."

Brandon nodded slightly.

At that moment, Candice had just arrived outside the research facility.

Stepping out of the car, she instinctively surveyed the building before her.

It was even larger than she'd imagined, certainly not inferior to the professional research facilities under the Mortimer Group.

Plus, there were security guards stationed at the entrance—very tight security.

This patient must be someone important.

While pondering this, Candice approached and asked one of the guards, "Hello, I'm here by invitation to see a patient. Is Mr. Nelson here?"

Hearing this, the guard immediately responded politely, "Yes, you must be Dr. Mandy? We've been expecting you. Please follow me!"

"Alright."

Candice nodded and followed him inside.

Two minutes later, they reached a medical room within the facility.

"Please wait a moment."

The guard said to Candice, then stepped forward to knock on the door.

Soon after, the door opened from inside.

Candice instinctively looked up to see who it was.

The first thing that caught her eye was a young, refined face with scholarly features. The man looked somewhat anxious as he asked, "Is Dr. Mandy here?"

Candice was instantly horrified.

Because she recognized him immediately—it was Knox!

Brandon's personal assistant!

She was shocked on the spot.

What was going on?

Why was Knox here?

Wait a minute!

Candice suddenly recalled meeting Elijah at the hospital yesterday, and the job Gray had coincidentally asked her to take.

So the patient she was supposed to see was Brandon?

As if confirming her thoughts, Candice soon saw the man inside the medical room.

He sat on the sofa with perfect posture, his features refined. On his straight nose rested gold-rimmed glasses with a gold chain hanging by his ears. Paired with a white shirt and black trousers, he looked elegant and distinguished.

Who else could it be but Brandon?

In that instant, Candice felt her scalp tingle, and her first reaction was to turn around and leave immediately!

She truly hadn't expected that in her carelessness, she would forget to ask Gray about the patient's identity.

This kind of oversight would never have happened before, but yesterday at the hospital, she had been so focused on avoiding Brandon that she'd neglected this crucial detail.

Now, Candice felt indescribable regret.

She wanted nothing more than to leave before Knox recognized her.

Though she wore a face mask, had her hair up, and was dressed conservatively to look like she was in her thirties or forties, she couldn't guarantee Brandon wouldn't recognize her.

However, Candice wasn't so fortunate.

Before she could turn around, Knox called out to her.

"Are you Dr. Mandy?"

Knox excitedly stepped forward, blocking Candice's only escape route.

He enthusiastically introduced himself, "Hello, I'm Mr. Nelson who contacted you. My name is Knox. Thank you for coming all this way, Dr. Mandy. Mr. Obelon has been waiting for you. We'd be grateful for your expertise."

With that, he moved to usher Candice inside.
