Chapter 64 The Attack

It was the morning of the day the Blood King would attack. Everyone had breakfast and then went to their assigned posts. The goal was to minimize the damage the fight would cause so we posted everyone as far enough away from the towns as possible without leaving the territory. We kept in contact with each other. The scouts hid in the trees watching and waiting for any signs the Blood King was here.

Hours had gone by. Everyone was getting restless. Then one of the scouts reported they saw movement on the southside of the territory. I ordered everyone to move toward the south slowly.

As I got nearer to the south, my body began to glow again. I thought it couldn’t have picked a worse time. Last time I glowed, I passed out afterward. I couldn’t afford for that to happen this time.

We continued heading south and stopped just before the wall at the edge of the territory. We waited. A few minutes later, a fireball came over the wall. What the hell? The Blood King has someone with a little extra juice this time around. I told each member of my pack to watch out for fireballs and keep their eyes peeled for any other magic. One of our witches put out the fireball before it landed.

Several more fireballs came over the wall and one hit it. The witches and fae went to work putting them out before they hit the ground. The one that hit the wall blasted a hole in it. The Blood King’s minions ran through. We held our ground and defended ourselves. Once again we divided the enemy up and started taking them down. When the Blood King came through the wall, Taylor was prepared with the spell. I saw a fireball heading toward Taylor and got Phoenix to place a protective barrier around Taylor while Mary put the flaming ball out. I grabbed Scarlett and the others when Taylor’s spell was done and we ran toward the Blood King. I was still glowing and I think that distracted the Blood King long enough for us to catch him. But then he slipped away when we got attacked by some of his minions. I had Mary trap the Blood King in the territory so he could not escape. We took care of his lackeys and went to find him. It was amazing to see how well everyone was working together to take down our enemies. I got distracted by the rhythm of it all for a moment. Then I saw him, the Blood King, running towards the town.

We chased after him, taking out those who attacked us along the way. Then I noticed the battle was following us. I realized then that the rogues and wanderers fighting alongside the Blood King were focused on me and Scarlett. The fireballs kept coming, from where I couldn’t tell. I never did see the person responsible. It was getting harder for the witches to put them out in the midst of all the fighting. I could tell it was taking a toll on them. I sent out a command to focus on the enemy, we would deal with the fireballs later.

Building after building went up in flames. I asked Scarlett to teleport in front of the Blood King to stop him in his tracks. When she did. He nearly fell over from the surprise. Scarlett fought with him until we got there.

When we arrived, Scarlett had him on his back. Taylor and Mary got to work on a spell to hold him in place. Phoenix put a protective barrier around us.

“So, Blood King, why is it you are fixated on killing one girl,” I asked.

“She wasn’t supposed to live. I had been killing off her family for centuries. Only leaving one alive so I could continue to get my revenge. I was done when I got to her. I wasn’t leaving anyone alive from that generation. I was to be done with my revenge. But she survived.”

“Why were you seeking revenge?”

“Her family, back before Sari saved the supernatural, killed my wife and child. Killed them because we were different. We didn’t hurt anyone. We fed off animals, not people. They called us monsters but they were the monsters. After my wife and child were murdered, I decided I would show them what a real monster looks like. I became the Blood King. Not many knew of my existence, I was the boogeyman in the night. The monster under the bed and in the closet. I was the reason children were afraid of the dark. But I stopped, until I found she was still alive.”

“That’s so dumb. Your revenge ended when you killed the people responsible for killing your wife and child. To drag it out like that, is unjustified. Your revenge journey ends here. As King of all supernaturals, I sentence you to death.” I reached down with my hand all aglow, and the moment my hand touched his skin, the Blood King turned to ash. I, and everyone with me, was surprised. I had intended to rip out his heart, instead he turned to ash. I immediately put my hands in my pockets, not wanting to turn anyone else to ash. Then I remembered something the moon goddesses had said last year. When I come into my full powers, I can do things with a thought or a touch depending on my intentions.

I looked around at those still fighting. Then at the ash that used to be the Blood King. I looked around again. Then I thought the battle should be over, I wanted it to be over. I leaned down and touched the ground, sinking my fingers into the dirt. A few moments later our enemies fell to the ground, their hearts having been ripped out by vines and branches. As I walked around them, I touched each one turning them to ash as I had done with the Blood King.

“Let their ashes return to the earth and nourish it.” I said.
