Chapter 138 What Death-Seeking Thing Is She Doing Again?
Chapter 138 What Death-Seeking Thing Is She Doing Again?
Elena was pregnant and had finally moved into the Davis family home, just as she'd hoped.
But she couldn't stay still for even a moment.
Preston was still at the office dealing with work when he got a call from the housekeeper. "Sir, could you come home? Ms. Watson, she..."
His desk was buried in files, Preston was already irritable, and now hearing the housekeeper's hesitant tone, he snapped impatiently, "What's she doing now?"
The housekeeper glanced at the people coming and going in the yard. Thinking Elena might soon be the lady of the house, she didn't dare complain, only mumbling, "You'll see when you get here."
Preston's brow furrowed. He grabbed his coat with irritation and drove home.
Before he even stepped inside, he saw workers streaming in and out the front door. His face darkened like a storm cloud.
He strode into the house with a cold expression and immediately spotted the woman lounging on the living room sofa.
She sure knew how to enjoy herself—AC running, relaxing on the couch eating fruit, directing people around. "I don't like this either. Take it out. And that vase is hideous. Get rid of it too."
Everything in this house had been arranged by Sophie herself. Now, looking at the room torn apart into near chaos, a vein throbbed at Preston's temple. "Elena, what the hell are you doing! Everyone stop right now!"
That last sentence was a shout at the workers still moving furniture.
The workers immediately froze, looking between Preston and Elena.
Elena leisurely turned her gaze to Preston, raising an eyebrow. "You're home."
Preston strode forward and grabbed her hand, pointing at the ransacked house. "What is this?" he demanded coldly.
Elena winced in pain and yanked her hand back. "I don't like how this place is decorated. I'm having them change it. Why are you making such a big deal out of this?"
A flash of ice flickered in Preston's deep blue eyes. "Do you have any idea that everything in this house was arranged by Sophie herself when she was here? How dare you—"
Elena laughed lightly, her expression casual. "Why wouldn't I dare? I'm the lady of this house now."
Of course she knew Sophie had arranged everything herself. That's precisely why she wanted it gone.
She was going to be the mistress here now—she wasn't about to spend her days staring at these depressing reminders, letting Preston pine for his lost love every time he looked around.
Preston's face darkened. He grabbed Elena's chin roughly, his voice turning vicious. "Who gave you the nerve to touch her things? Don't think I won't hurt you."
His cold, menacing gaze carried murderous intent. Elena flinched briefly, then thrust her belly toward Preston defiantly. "Go ahead, kill me. Let's see if you're willing to sacrifice the baby in my stomach."
Preston's warning glare bore into her. "Don't think I won't. Don't test my limits."
"What is going on here! Preston, let her go right now!" A sharp rebuke came from the doorway.
Violet hurried inside and pulled them apart.
She first shot Elena a warning look. "Can't you behave for once? Stop constantly pushing everyone's buttons."
Elena snorted lightly and turned to sit back down on the sofa.
Violet glared at her. "Ungrateful piece of work."
Then she turned to Preston. "Why are you arguing with a woman? She's carrying your only child now. Can't you just put up with her for the baby's sake?"
Preston pressed his lips into a tight line.
As long as these things remained, Sophie remained. He could tolerate her for the sake of the child, but now she wanted to get rid of everything—she'd crossed his line.
Violet gave him a cold look. "She's dead. What good does keeping these dead objects do?"
"She's not dead!" Preston shot back coldly.
"Fine, fine, she's not dead. Whatever you say. But until this baby is born, don't you dare touch her."
After warning Preston, Violet turned to Elena.
"I had the housekeeper arrange a room for you. From now on, you'll stay in the second bedroom on the side upstairs. Someone will take care of you specifically. You'd better make sure my grandchild arrives safe and sound. If anything happens to this baby, between that and everything else you've done, Preston has more than enough reason to tear you limb from limb."
Seeing Preston back down under Violet's pressure, Elena's lips curved into a smug smile.
"Don't worry. No one cares more about this baby than I do."
This child was her security for the rest of her life.
Violet looked at her triumphant face with inner disgust.
She'd thought the girl might be clever, but turns out her brain wasn't that good either.
She'd finally managed to move into the house, and instead of trying to win Preston over, she was deliberately making him miserable at every turn.
Did she really think she'd still be useful after the baby was born?
Don't think that signed agreement meant she was safe.
With just a little maneuvering, Preston could get rid of her easily.
Elena had no idea what Violet was thinking.
She clapped her hands toward the door, and immediately a plainly dressed middle-aged woman walked in.
"This is the woman I hired. She'll be responsible for my meals from now on. The person you arranged won't be necessary."
Violet knew exactly what she was thinking—the girl was guarding against them.
"Suit yourself."
She gave a cold snort, glancing at the plainly dressed woman, seeing nothing special about her.
The person Violet had hired was the best maternal care specialist available—someone to handle pregnancy care, postpartum recovery, and childcare, all in one.
But Elena didn't appreciate it. Violet couldn't be bothered to care.
Before leaving, she leaned close to Preston's ear and whispered, "Let her do what she wants. Worst case, we'll restore everything later. The furniture's still here—it's not going to grow legs and run away."
A vein throbbed at Preston's temple as he gritted out, "I know."
After Violet left, Preston didn't want to stay home a moment longer. Without even glancing at Elena, he strode out.
Elena didn't particularly care either. She gestured for people to continue the renovations.
She beckoned to the woman standing respectfully to the side. "Come upstairs with me."
Then she headed upstairs first.
Opening the room Violet had arranged for her, seeing the fully furnished space, Elena was satisfied enough.
She sat down on the sofa and instructed the woman, "Close the door."
The woman closed the door and walked over to crouch beside Elena. "Elena, are you... are you being too harsh on them?"
Talia Watson had seen the look in Preston's eyes when he left—it made her nervous.
This was someone Elena would have to spend her whole life with. How could she treat him like an enemy?
Elena gave her a dismissive glance. "Mom, you're worrying too much. I know what I'm doing."
Her tone was full of impatience.
Her mother had made a complete mess of her own marriage, and now she wanted to teach her how to please a husband? Such a busybody.
If it weren't for the fact that she was her real mother and would never help outsiders hurt her, she never would have let her come take care of her.
Just looking at her brought back memories of how pitiful she'd been as a child.
Thinking of this, her disgust only deepened.
"From now on, whether in front of others or in private, call me 'ma'am.' Don't use my name, and don't let anyone know about our relationship."
Talia knew her daughter looked down on her and didn't dare argue. She nodded obediently. "I... I understand."
