Chapter 172 You don’t even know me
Danny looked at her quietly for a long moment, taking his time to really process what she had just said. “Marry you?” A confused smile spread across his face as he tried to wrap his head around it. “You don’t even know me.”
Love simply shrugged, her voice steady and full of unwavering certainty. “I don’t care.” There wasn’t a single trace of doubt in her tone. “I’ve loved you ever since I watched your first movie, Dry Bones.”
The title brought a smile to Danny’s face. It was the movie that had launched his entire career and turned him into one of Hollywood’s biggest rising action stars.
He rubbed the back of his neck before letting out a small laugh. “Alright,” he said, looking at her with a thoughtful expression. “First, let’s have the doctors see if you’re actually a match.”
Love nodded immediately without hesitating for even a second. A whole series of medical tests followed over the next few hours.
Blood samples were taken, more thorough examinations were done, and when the results finally came back, the doctors confirmed that Love was a perfect compatible donor.
Danny looked genuinely relieved, like a huge weight had been lifted off his shoulders.
The hospital staff quickly prepared all the paperwork, and Love signed every single document they placed in front of her without bothering to read much of the fine print.
Danny also signed a document of his own. It was a written promise stating that after the surgery, he would marry her. Holding that paper in her hands made Love smile with pure joy. She believed every single word he had written.
Later that afternoon, a nurse entered her room carrying a clipboard. “I’m just here to check your vitals,” she said.
Love nodded as the nurse began taking her temperature, blood pressure, and recording a few other measurements before preparing her for some additional tests. The room stayed quiet for a while until the nurse suddenly spoke up.
“Ma’am…” She sounded hesitant, like she was wrestling with whether she should say anything. “It’s probably not my place to say this…” She glanced around to make sure nobody else was nearby.
“But if Danny isn’t willing to donate his own kidney to his mother…” Her voice dropped even softer. “Why are you doing it?”
Love immediately frowned, blinking in total confusion. “What?” She shook her head. “He told me the doctors wouldn’t let him. He said his kidneys aren’t healthy because he drank too much alcohol.”
The nurse’s eyebrows slowly lifted as she looked at Love with clear disbelief. “I never expected someone as smart as you to be this gullible.”
Love’s expression stiffened instantly. “What do you mean?” She searched the nurse’s face desperately for answers. “What are you trying to say?”
The nurse simply pressed her lips together tightly. For a few seconds, she looked like she really wanted to explain everything, but instead she shook her head. “I’ve already said too much.”
Without another word, she picked up the clipboard and quietly walked out of the room.
Love stared at the closed door, her mind racing a mile a minute. Something suddenly didn’t feel right at all. She decided she would wait for Danny to come back and ask him directly about it.
Minutes dragged into hours, but Danny never showed up. Instead, her phone buzzed with a text message from him: ‘Sorry, I’m back on set. Thank you again for everything. I really appreciate what you’re doing for my mom.’
Love stared at the message for a long time, a heavy, sinking feeling settling deep in her chest. The nurse’s words refused to leave her mind no matter how hard she tried.
The more she thought about them, the more foolish and naive she felt. Maybe, maybe she had been way too trusting.
Finally making up her mind, she climbed out of bed. She wasn’t going through with the surgery anymore, not until she knew the whole truth.
She left her ward and headed down the hallway, determined to speak directly with the doctor in charge of the transplant.
Before she could reach the office, familiar laughter echoed around the corner. Love stopped walking immediately. That voice, it was Danny. Instinctively, she stepped closer without making a single sound.
Danny was standing outside one of the consultation rooms with a doctor, looking completely relaxed and at ease. “I told you I’d find another one easily,” he chuckled. “They’re all the same.”
A mocking grin appeared on his face. “But unlike the others, this one wants to marry me.” He let out a cold, heartless laugh. “Too bad I can’t marry a dead woman.”
Love felt the blood drain completely from her face. Her fingers slowly curled into tight fists as her entire body turned ice cold. So, he had lied.
He wasn’t back on any movie set at all. He had stayed right there in the hospital the whole time. And everything he had told her, every smile, every kind word, every promise, it had all been completely fake.
Worse, he wanted her dead. The though of it sent a strange fear through her spine as she regretted letting her father remove her bodyguards.
Then the doctor laughed along with him. “You really are a prince charming,” he said, his tone dripping with sarcasm. “This makes the thirteenth unsuspecting woman you’ve brought here.”
A cruel smile crossed his face. “We’ll make sure every usable organ is harvested before sending her body to the morgue.” He chuckled darkly. “She already signed the consent forms, and just like the others, she didn’t read it.”
Love’s breathing became uneven and ragged. She couldn’t believe the horrifying words she had just heard. Her entire body trembled violently as fear gripped her so tightly that she could barely think straight.
Without making a sound, she slowly backed away before turning around and hurrying back toward her hospital room as fast as she could.
The moment she got inside, she closed the door with shaking hands. Her face had gone completely pale.
Barely able to hold her phone steady, she quickly dialed the one person she knew would never fail her. The call connected, and tears filled her eyes.
Keeping her voice as low as possible, she whispered desperately, “Dad… please help me.”
