Chapter 150 150.Dancing with werewolves
Tabitha’s POV
My heart pounds as he looks at me. His eyes hold something gentle, a far cry from the usual icy gaze he has. He leans down and kisses my forehead.
“I will ask the maids to prepare something light when you wake up.”
He looks at me one last time before turning to leave.
So, I grab his arm, stopping him.
“Are you really going to marry Melanie?” The words tumble out before I can stop them.
He looks startled.
“What would you rather have me do?”
My gaze drops to the hands resting on my chest. I don’t know what answer I’m expecting from him, but this is definitely not it.
He lifts his hand to touch my cheek. I turn my face away and glare at him.
“Do you think she will make a good wife?” I spit bitterly.
Shit. Maybe it’s the alcohol but I seem to have lost the ability to filter my thoughts before it vomits out of my mouth. But I don’t want to stop.
“Yes,” he answers.
I want to throw him out. And I’m a second away from doing it until he adds…
“I think you are asking the wrong question, gorgeous.”
My heart betrays me with a flutter. “What are you saying?”
He studies me for a moment as if trying to decipher what’s going on in my mind.
“Do I think Melanie will make a good wife? Yes. She is capable. She was raised to meet the expectations and standards of her family. She is the daughter of a powerful alpha just like my father and her brother will lead their pack one day. She is one of the strongest she-wolves on this island as well.
Each word feels like a cut. The more he speaks, the more I see how well they match. No wonder the elders and practically everyone else who knows them are obsessed with their match. They are perfect for each other!
“But everyone already knows that,” he continues. “That’s not what you should be asking me.”
“Then what should I ask you?”
He cups my cheek this time and I let him. His thumb brushes my lower lip.
“Ask me if I want to marry her.”
“I already asked that,” I reply.
He shakes his head. “No. You asked if I will marry her. My father may want it and the pack may expect it. But that is different from asking if I want it.”
“Well?” I ask, bitterness seeping into my voice. “Do you want to?”
A faint smile appears on his lips. It is rare enough to steal my breath.
“No.”
“But you will still marry her,” I shoot back.
He exhales.
“If this conversation happened a few months ago before you returned to Kaelara, I would have agreed without hesitation,” he says. “I didn’t really care about marriage. My father was right about one thing. When we turn twenty four, we can break free from the mate bond assigned by the Moon Goddess. We can choose. Marriage and bonds are tools in our world. I don’t necessarily like it, but I understand the responsibility that we have as the sons of a powerful Alpha. The Crystal Ridge pack must remain strong. Sometimes a powerful union is necessary, and my parents’ marriage proved that. It was a political move. Emotions had no place in it.”
“And now?” I ask. “Can you still say the same thing?”
The smile fades from his lips. He looks at me as if I am the only thing in the room.
“I used to think people were foolish for choosing feelings over logic,” he says. “Now I understand. Wanting something so much that you cannot breathe without it. Wanting it enough to bleed for it. To break rules for it.”
He leans in and kisses the corner of my mouth. I shudder.
“I have never wanted someone the way I want you,” he whispers. “Not until you walked back into our lives.”
My heart somersaults.
“A-And what are you planning to do about it?” I barely manage to get out the words.
Evren smiles again.
“Let’s just say that I don’t mind breaking a few more rules to get what I want.”
I swallow hard, trying to catch a steady breath.
“A-And if you bleed? O-Or something worse…”
“I have enough blood to spare,” he says before grabbing me by the nape and capturing my lips into a heated kiss. I gasp in his mouth.
Shit, I miss the taste of his lips on mine. I shudder as I wrap my arms around his nape and return his kisses, wanting every corner of his mouth, wanting it marking mine. Evren’s kisses trail down my neck and nips on my skin, making me whimper.
“Fuck.” The word sounds like a sexy spell coming from him. “I’ll die for this. And I won’t regret a single thing.”
He kisses me again and I instantly lose my mind. He bites my lower lip and snakes his tongue inside my mouth. He’s so eager to claim my lips as if he has every right to it—and I freaking love it. I love how I uncover this side of him. I love how I undo the stoic Evren—to make him lose his mind with just a single kiss.
I love this.
By the time he lets go of my lips, we are both panting.
“Sleep,” he instructs. “And drink a lot of water when you wake up.”
Just like that, he exits my room, leaving me hot and needy.
Evren was right. The party doesn’t end until late in the night. The garden is still alive with music and laughter long after the formal program has wrapped up. Some of the older guests, including Alpha Yoseff Beckett and his wife, and Alpha Eliott Sharpe and his wife, left about an hour ago. What remains now is the younger crowd, the ones who stayed for the after-party where the real fun begins.
I even spot Evelyn in the middle of the dance floor, swaying with the crowd and waving a bottle of champagne in the air like she owns the night. I am surprised to see Andrew whoops as she takes a swig straight from it, nearly losing her balance before bursting into laughter. Evelyn offers the bottle to him which Andrew gratefully takes. The two of them dance on the dancefloor like maniacs.
Poor, Andrew. He has no idea that he’s dancing with werewolves.
The music grows louder that I can hear it even up to my room. I woke up a few hours ago and had a light dinner prepared by the maids. I feel better thankfully, but I’m in no mood to join the party in the garden.
I notice that Alpha Emery hasn’t returned to the mansion since leaving the party earlier. My mom is nowhere in sight either, and part of me hopes she’s simply mingling with the other guests and not where I fear she might be.
Sighing, I shake my head and glances at the clock that says it’s two hours away from midnight. The day is ending, but I haven’t given the brothers their gift.
So, I decide that I’m not gonna let that happen. I grab a pen and paper and write a note in my room. If there’s a perfect time to sneak out of the estate, this is it.
