Chapter 22 The Mirror

Chapter 22 The Mirror

Lily's POV
I ran until my legs had nothing left.
Away from the school, away from the classroom, away from the sound of my own name being used as a punchline. My feelings for Wade had been quietly growing and settling into places that were never meant to hold them. His denial did not just sting. It landed somewhere deeper, somewhere unexpected, somewhere that was going to take a long time to come back from.
Going back to that house was impossible. Facing him again would mean reliving that moment over and over until there was nothing left of me worth salvaging.
And beneath everything, a cruel voice whispered what it always whispered when I was too tired to fight it.
"A fat slut like you deserves nothing."
I sat under the shade of a tree at the edge of the road and called my agency and resigned. I did not want to speak to Mr. Gambino. I did not want to hear his voice or explain or be asked questions I did not have answers to. I just needed it to be over.
Then I called Ryan.
"Hi, Ryan," I said, and my voice broke on his name.
"Lily? What is wrong?"
"I just lost my job and I am going through a lot and I do not think I can stand anything right now and I feel like I am breaking–"
"Where are you right now?" he cut in.
"I do not know, I am just sitting outside near—"
The line went dead.
I stared at my phone. Then I sat and waited and within minutes a black Mercedes pulled up in front of me and Ryan stepped out and crossed the pavement toward me fast.
"Lily, what happened? What are you doing out here?" he said.
"Ryan, I—"
"Shush." He placed his fingers gently on my lips and pulled me into a hug.
I relaxed into it completely. All the tension I had been carrying since the classroom, since the water bottle hitting the floor, since hearing Wade's voice say those words in front of everyone, loosened at once. I felt safe.
He guided me to the car and drove without asking more questions.
His house was quiet when we arrived.
"Where are your parents?" I asked, settling onto the sofa.
" They went on a business trip. They have been away a lot lately," he said, moving to the kitchen.
He came back a few minutes later with a plate. Grilled chicken, mixed greens, cucumber and cherry tomatoes with lemon squeezed over everything. Simple and clean and carefully put together.
"Have this," he said with concern
"I did not ask for—"
"You need it," he said plainly. "It helps with weight loss."
I looked at the plate and the bluntness of it sat somewhere between an insult and an act of care and I could not immediately decide which it was.
But he was right, I needed to change. I needed to walk back into Diamond High as someone they did not recognise. I needed to stop giving them the same target to aim at.
I ate the food, gradually and steadily.
"Tell me what happened," he said when I finished.
"Ryan, I need to transform," I said.
"Transform?"
"I am tired of being bullied. I am tired of all of it. I want you to help me change the way you did," I said.
He looked at me steadily like he was waiting for the rest of it.
"I had to quit my job because—" I stopped. "I would rather not talk about that part yet. But I have nowhere to go. I cannot go back home, my stepdad makes everything complicated. Mum is sick and I do not want to burden her." I had not noticed the tears until they were already falling.
He stood and placed my head gently against his chest.
"It is okay Lily. I am here, I'll always be here."he said
I nodded and wiped my face.
"So," he said, pulling back and looking at me with something lighter in his eyes. "Are you ready for a transformation?"
"How did you do it?" I asked.
"Discipline and exercise mostly."
"If I stayed here for a few weeks and committed to it, do you think I could actually change?" I looked at him for an honest answer.
He looked away briefly. Then sat beside me.
"Lily, you do not have to stop school for this. You do not have to put your life on hold just because society decided not to accept you."
"You do not understand—"
"I do," he said firmly. "I have been in those shoes and I know exactly how tight they were. But you are special in your own way. Forget society. Forget those spoiled kids at Diamond High."
"They called me a fat pick me slut Ryan." My voice broke. "You do not know what it feels like to have someone you care about deny you in front of everyone just because of how you look."
He was quiet for a moment. Then he stood and held out his hand.
He led me to the standing mirror in the corner of the room and stood behind me, his hands resting lightly at my waist. We both looked at my reflection together.
"Have you ever actually looked at yourself?" he said quietly. "Have you ever noticed how beautiful you are? Even when they try to break you?"
The tears came harder than I expected. I could not stop them. I pressed my hands over my face and cried on his shoulder the way I had not let myself cry in front of anyone in a very long time.
Nobody had ever done this before. Nobody had ever stood me in front of a mirror and reminded me of my worth.
"The Lily I know never breaks down," he said, rubbing my back slowly. "What happened to her? Did you let them get to you?"
"I was strong Ryan. I kept being strong for so long until they finally broke me," I said between tears.
"Do you remember what you did when those boys had me on the ground in that alley?" he asked. "You did not run, you did not hesitate. You marched straight in, I know that girl is still in you. She is just waiting for you to wake her up."
I stood in front of that mirror for a long time after the tears stopped. Really looking at myself.

He gave me the guest room and I fell asleep almost immediately.
"Wake up." A gentle pat on my shoulder.
"Why so early?" I groaned.
"Because you have a goal," he said, and before I could argue he had already pulled me upright.
He made lemon juice and vegetables for breakfast and sat across from me while I drank it.
"Lily, I am going to be honest with you," he said. "Exercise alone was not what changed me so quickly."
"What else?" I asked
"My grandmother gave me something before she passed. An old family remedy." He paused.
"I am sorry for the loss. What kind of remedy?"
"It is extremely bitter," he said honestly
"I have been through worse," I said firmly
He looked at me for a moment, then he stood and went to get it.

The following week I went back to school.
I was not going to let them have the satisfaction of my absence. I was not going to disappear quietly and give them a story to tell about how they finally broke Lily Johnson. I walked through the doors of Diamond High and kept my head up and let them stare.
And they did stare, every head in the corridor turned like they just saw a ghost.
The whispers started immediately, perhaps they had not expected me to come back so soon and that small fact alone gave me something to stand on.
I scanned the classroom when I arrived and Wade was not there.
Something tightened in my chest that I refused to name. I pushed the thought out and told myself it was not my concern anymore. The Harrington family was a chapter I had closed. Mia's face came to mind briefly and I pushed that away too because if I let myself think about Mia I would fall apart completely.
After the first class Wade rushed in looking completely disorganised. I kept my eyes forward. I could feel him looking at me from across the room but I did not look back.
After the last class I walked out without stopping for anyone.
I heard his fast footsteps behind me but Ryan's black Mercedes was already waiting at the gate so I got in and pulled the door shut.
Through the window I saw Wade stop on the pavement. He stood completely still, watching the car. The expression on his face was something I had not seen there before.
It was regret, pure and unguarded and too late.
I looked away and Ryan pulled out into the road and I stared straight ahead and told myself I felt nothing.
