Chapter 87 Take A Chance
Chapter 87 Take A Chance
EILEEN POV:
‘It’s okay,’ I mouthed at her. If she believed it, she was doing better than me.
“I’ve done what you asked. Now ask them to back the fuck off!” Arthur yelled.
I waited for the instruction to come through.
“Tell him that the police have blocked off the roads so it will take some time to retreat.”
I repeated the words told to me, but with more emotion.
“Ask them to hurry up, or I will slice your sister’s pretty face open!” he announced.
My eyes widened. I saw a flash of silver and Lucy recoiled. She hovered over Harry protectively while the two babies cried loudly. They were terrified, both not knowing what was happening, but they could sense Arthur’s ill intent.
I nodded jerkily and turned my head slowly. The officer behind me nodded and put the walkie-talkie to his mouth.
“Tell him that a new getaway car is being prepared for him.” I waited. “His tires are blown off so he might get into an accident if he’s not careful.”
I sighed with relief. He couldn’t escape even if he wanted to. But in his desperation, he might throw his life away and get into an accident. I couldn’t afford it.
So, I told him that a getaway car was being prepared for him.
I could hear the smile in his voice. “This is why I like you more than your boyfriend. You are easy to talk to.”
My nails dug into my palm. As I had expected, he called on me because he thought I was an easy target. But he also hated Dominic. It was a good thing the cops were keeping him back. I couldn’t imagine what Dominic would go through were he here instead of me.
I didn’t know how to respond.
“You have to convince him to take the infant out. Tell him he will fall sick and make more problems for him.”
I blinked. Arthur wouldn’t care about the consequences. He had a weapon and had kidnapped someone. Moreover, Harry was the child of the man he currently loathed.
Logically, I knew we had to slowly take everyone out of the car. Arthur would never back down. If he got the chance, he would take them on the getaway car to keep himself safe, too.
“I think Harry is hungry,” she said out of the blue. Her eyes were zeroed in on Lucy, who nodded in response. Her eyes were on Arthur, as if he had asked her to corroborate that sentence and she did.
“Could you let him out? He has been sick for a few days and he needs to feed and then take his medicines to get better…” I bit my lip as I lied.
“No one is getting off!” Arthur barked, taking everyone by surprise. “Do you think I am stupid or something?”
Irritation oozed from his voice. I took an involuntary step forward when I saw the glint of the knife again.
I shook my head, trying to assuage him. “You know he has been sick. You must have seen the pictures from the hospital. He is really sick…” I lowered my voice. He really was sick for a long time, and I couldn’t imagine how this kidnapping would affect him.
I was no child psychologist but something in me told me it might have a long lasting effect on his infant mind. He understood nothing, but that didn’t mean he was senseless.
Silence. It rolled on until I was shifting from one foot to the other.
“I don’t care what happens to him, really. He is that asshole’s kid and after what he has put me through?” Arthur laughed. I didn’t like how it crawled under my skin.
I had no idea how to answer. My mind was blank. “Tell him that Mr. Presley will thank him if the infant is let off.”
Yes!
Arthur had always been profit oriented and unreliable. As long as he could pass the buck to someone, he would choose that option.
“I’m sorry he did that,” I said slowly. Be close to him, make him think you are on his team, Eileen. “But he will come for you if anything happens to Harry.” I paused, my eyes scanning the inside of the car. It had calmed down. Lucy was rocking Harry, trying to soothe him, but Arthur was no longer threatening them.
He was probably in deep thought, mulling over the pros and cons.
“I’ll ask him to help you out, okay?” I said softly.
Arthur grunted. “You want me to believe that the man who had me fired and blacklisted from the job market will help me? Why do you think I am doing this? He has some bad people hunting me down, Eileen! Have you any idea what kind of man you sleep with every night?”
I stiffened.
Dominic had said one thing previously that returned to him. ‘He thinks he knows rock bottom? He has no idea what it looks like.’
I knew he had every intention of showing Arthur what it looked like, but not that Dominic would send people to get Arthur. That didn’t sound like Dominic at all.
“Don’t argue with him,” the voice in my ear said abruptly. “You’re doing great… Just keep talking to him until he lets at least one person out.”
I took a shuddering breath. I didn’t argue just like I had been instructed.
“He’ll listen to me, I promise!” I wanted to move closer but I got a stern look from one of the officers. I froze in my spot and my shoulders sagged with disappointment. “He… if something happens to him, things will look worse for you. You said it yourself… Dominic won’t let you off…”
‘There was still a chance… take it!’ I begged him internally.
Another minute of complete silence.
“But the thing can’t walk out by himself. You want me to throw him out of the window?” he countered.
