Chapter Thirty-six

LUNA

I still felt eyes on me. Like I was being stalked by a predator. I didn’t know what to think of it so I shook it off like I always did.

I woke up that morning with a tiny blood stain on my nightwear; it was that time of the month again. I rushed to the bathroom and washed up, wearing my sanitary pad and some loose jeans. I stood in the mirror and laughed at my reflection. This might explain the paranoia part—my period always makes a whole different personality out of me.

I sighed as I threw my hair up into a bun, realizing that I had just used up the last of my sanitary pads and might need to rush to a pharmacy to get one. Might as well drop in and see Rose along the way.

I picked up my phone and stepped out of my room, smiling at Steve and Joshua standing outside my door. They smiled back. It took a while, but I managed to break the ice.

“I want to go out.”

“Where, ma’am?”

“The mall.” Steve nodded at Joshua, and he walked down the hall.

“Where is he going?”

“To assemble the cars and get the guards.”

“Cars? Guards? How many are we talking about here?”

“Three cars and twelve guards.”

“What?! That’s a lot…and unnecessary.” Steve shrugged.

“The boss doesn’t think it is.”

“Two cars, Steve. Two cars and five guards.”

“I’m afraid I cannot do that, ma’am.”

“And why not? Because I am a woman?” His eyes widened in panic at my subtle accusation.

“No!!!” He relaxed when a smirk appeared on my lips. “No. But the boss insists…”

“And I insist that we would be going with only two cars and five guards. Twelve guards are too much detail. I don’t like it.”

“But, ma’am, what are we going to tell the boss?” I smirked at him.

“You can tell him I insisted. Unless…you want to tell him why you’re disobeying me?” His eyes widened slightly. “Yeah, that’s what I thought.” He mumbled something under his breath and nodded.

“Thank you, Steve. We’ll get ice cream at the mall.” He rolled his eyes and smiled.

“On one condition.”

“What’s that?”

“The boss is not to hear of this.” I raised two fingers in the air.

“Scout’s honor.”

“I’ll let you know when we’re ready for you.” I nodded and went back into my room.

Soon enough, Steve came to fetch me, and we headed for the mall. Steve, Joshua, and I in one car; the other three guards in the car behind us. I didn’t miss the fact that they were armed. Heavily. It made me feel more relaxed blasting Brenda Fassie through the speakers.

We got to the mall in one piece, and as soon as I stepped out, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was being watched. That was odd. There were hundreds of people moving about. I mean, it was a fucking mall. I looked around the mall, hoping to find the pair of eyes that were fixated on me. I didn’t see them.

“What’s wrong?”

“Hmm?” I snapped my head to Joshua.

“What’s wrong?” I looked around again, and then back at Joshua.

“Nothing. Let’s go.”

We went into the mall just for me to get sanitary pads, but I left with five bags of clothes, shoes, food, perfumes, sanitary pads, and a lot of new underwear. That was usually the result when your billionaire mate gives you his black card and tells you to do whatever you want with it.

Just as we got to the car, I groaned and held my lower stomach.

“Guys... I need to go pee. I’ll be back.” I turned around to leave but stopped when I noticed that both Joshua and Steve moved to follow me.

“Where are you guys going?”

“We’re coming with you.”

“No. You’re not. You’re going to wait by the cars, I won’t be long.”

“But…”

“You stay. If something is off, I’ll call you,” I said, waving my phone in the air. They both relented and waited while I sprinted to the bathroom. I rushed into a stall and quickly did my business.

Just as I had pulled up my panties and my jeans, I heard the door to the ladies open and close slowly. That shouldn’t have been a problem except that the footfalls sounded like those of a man.

Maybe they'd just missed their way?

My mind tried to rationalize the situation, but my guts kept telling me that something wasn’t right.

I took a deep breath and bent down as low as I could, ignoring the fact that this was a public bathroom and there was no reason any normal person should let their hands be touching the floor, and looked under the stall. I had every reason to be worried—the man in the stall was tall and had a gun in his hand, with a silencer attached at its tip.

Kneeling on the floor, I quickly pulled out my phone and tried calling Steve, but for some reason I didn’t have any network. I resisted the urge to swear and forced my brain to think. There were about fifteen stalls in there. I didn’t have long before he got to me. I could tell that he was a werewolf, and I knew that he could tell for sure that I was in there by my scent. I heard him chuckle.

“Come out, little miss. I can smell your fear.” He laughed again. “How pathetic.”

I looked around the tiny toilet, and lifted the cover of the water cistern, testing the weight of the porcelain in my hand. I knew that it might not do much to him, but hopefully, it would do enough for me to get out of there.

“Come out now…”

I took a deep breath and widened my stance, ready to attack as soon as he opened the door. He finally got to my stall, his shiny, black shoes tapping on the tiled floor. I strengthened my grip on my weapon. He opened the door and I immediately sent the porcelain right into his face as hard as I could, then bolted for the door.

I heard him grunt but didn’t look back to see if I had caused enough damage. I felt a hand pull on my hair and lift me off the ground.

“You little bitch,” he hissed in my ear. Tears came to my eyes at the pain in my scalp. My legs were swinging in the air and then he sent me flying across the bathroom. I landed on the counter, my back hitting the mirror, then fell to the floor.

He marched over to where I was on the floor and grabbed my throat, lifting me into the air again, and smiling sinisterly while he watched me pant for air. My vision began to blur and I knew it was only a matter of time before I passed out. Tears began rolling down my cheeks, and my life flashed before my eyes. I gasped. Was this how I was going to end?
