Drew
My heart was beating wildly as I watched Drew play in the sunny park, away from me. It was again such a painful sight, to see my son so close and at the same time so far away. But I was determined to enjoy every moment I could to be close to him, even if it was just from afar. The nanny who accompanied Drew seemed friendly and receptive, and gradually, not knowing who I really was, began to make friends with me. I kept my identity a secret, knowing that if I told you anything, I could ruin any chance of getting close to my son.
"Okay?" I ask and she smiles openly.
"Yes, I’m fine, thank you." she says and looks at the little one again.
"You take such good care of the little one, are you his mother?" I ask as who does not want anything, to disguise and she throws me another smile.
"No, Drew doesn’t have a mother. I’ve been taking care of him for a year, "she says and hearing it made my heart hurt, and I felt like screaming and saying that his mother was me.
"What happened to his mother?" I ask curious.
"Well, when I was hired, his grandfather told me that the poor thing had died in childbirth." I swallowed hard, and took a deep breath.
"Sad right?" yellow smile "He seems to love being here in the park." mute subject and she nods cheerfully.
"Oh, yes, I try to make opposites forever bring him here. He’s a wonderful child." she says.
"Drew is a charming name. Does he have a lot of fun?" I turn my gaze to my son, who smiles in my direction. Drew was the faithful copy of Jordan.
"Yes, he loves exploring and playing outdoors. It’s so good to see him smile." and I feel the sincerity in his voice, that woman loved my little one.
"He looks very happy. Do you take him for a walk often?" she opens her arms and he runs to her, holding his breath the next minute.
"Yes, we try to go out every day, but his grandfather does not approve much, so only when he allowed it." I bite my lips and watch her kiss Drew’s cheek, seeing that made me even more desire to hug him, have him take it back.
"Drew is very lucky to have someone as thoughtful as you looking after him," I say as I feel the tears come over me.
"Thank you, Ellen. I have him as one of my family." I smiled at her, seeing that in fact she had believed that she called me Ellen, after all I could not say my real name.
"It was a pleasure talking to you. Take good care of Drew." I speak softly and smile at the girl who once again releases my little one and gets up.
"I’ll always do my best for him." she says and says goodbye to me.
Careful not to draw too much attention, I approached where Drew was playing. The nanny gave me a warm smile when I approached, and I returned with a nervous smile, trying not to let the urgency in my heart. When the nanny turned her back for a moment, I saw my chance. With quick, quiet steps, I got close to Drew, my heart pounding into my chest. He was so close now, so vulnerable and at the same time so radiant with the innocence of childhood. So before I could think twice, I extended my arms and for a brief moment I could feel the warmth of my son against my chest. It was only an instant, but it was enough to flood my soul with a sense of love and longing that I had missed for so long.
"Drew," I whispered, tears clogging my voice as I held him gently.
His curious eyes met mine for a brief moment, and for a moment it seemed that the whole world had disappeared and it was just the two of us, who he had known me, who were there mother and son, united by our bond of love.
But then the nanny turned her attention to us, her face contorted in surprise to see me so close to Drew. She hesitated for a moment, but then smiled at me and allowed me to get a little closer to him, unaware that I was indeed his mother.
My heart was filled with gratitude as I hugged my son for a few precious seconds. I knew I was risking everything by approaching him like that, but for a brief moment, it was worth it. It was worth feeling my son’s touch, even if it was only for seconds. As I walked away from the park, the pain of separation ripping my heart out, I promised myself that I would do anything to bring Drew back home. I was willing to face any obstacle, risk anything, just to have him in my arms again. Because in the end, a mother’s love for her child was stronger than any barrier life could put in our path.
Upon returning to the motel after that brief and exciting encounter with Drew in the park, my heart was still beating with the intensity of the moment. The tears that had been contained during those precious seconds now threatened to overflow at any moment, and I allowed myself to feel every emotion that flooded my soul. As I climbed the steps toward my room, my thoughts were entirely turned to my son. Drew, the little miracle that had been taken from my arms so cruelly, time so distant from me, but that for a few seconds, I could hug him, feel his warmth and his presence, even without being able to reveal who I really was. That feeling, that brief moment of connection, was like a burning flame within me, a burning reminder of the love I felt for him. For two long years, I had longed for this moment so much, dreamed of it in the lonely nights and cried for its absence.
But now, even if it was only for a few seconds, I had had a chance to hug my son, to feel his heart beating close to mine. And that was enough to fill my heart with a joy I had not known for a long time. However, this joy was accompanied by deep pain, a constant reminder of the separation that kept us apart. As I sat by the motel bed, tears finally escaped, rolling freely across my face as I faced the cruel reality of the situation.
Drew was so close, and yet so far. He didn’t know who I was, couldn’t feel the love I held for him in my heart.
And as I struggled to contain the tears, I knew that this separation was inevitable, at least for now. But I was determined to change that. Determined to do the impossible to bring my son back home where he belonged. I would face any obstacle, risk everything, just to have him in my arms again. Because in the end, nothing was more important to me than my son. He was my reason for living, my light in the dark, and I would do anything for him. So as the tears continued to fall, I promised myself that I would not rest until Drew was back in my arms, where he belonged.
And with that burning determination burning inside me, I knew nothing could stop me.
Because a mother’s love for her child was stronger than any obstacle that life could put in its way.
