37 - The aftermath
The days that followed were a blur for Ethan, Lilly, Aiden, and Jason. The police investigation into Tiffany's death was ongoing, but the verdict was clear: self-defense and accidental fall. They were all cleared of any wrongdoing, but the trauma of the event lingered.
Lilly was still trying to come to terms with her newfound powers and the events that had unfolded. She felt guilty for being a part of it all, but also relieved that Tiffany was gone. She had been struggling to sleep, plagued by nightmares and visions of the clock tower. Ethan and Aiden were trying to be supportive, but they were also dealing with their own emotions.
The brothers had always been close, but the tension between them was palpable. Aiden was still reeling from the fact that he had been manipulated by Tiffany and her goons at the party, and Ethan was struggling to forgive himself for not being able to stop her. Their arguments had become more frequent, and their relationship was strained.
One evening, the twins sat on the couch, laptops open in front of them, as they tried to catch up on their schoolwork. But their minds were elsewhere.
"Lilly's been acting so strange lately," Aiden said, his brow furrowed in concern.
"I know," Ethan agreed, typing away on his laptop. "She's been having these crazy visions and nightmares. I'm starting to get worried."
Aiden set his own laptop aside and turned to his brother. "We need to talk to her about it. She's not coping with this on her own."
Ethan sighed. "I know, but she's being really resistant to the idea of seeking help. She thinks we're just trying to control her or something."
Aiden's expression turned incredulous. "That's ridiculous. We love her, Ethan. We're trying to help her."
Ethan shook his head. "I know, but she's really paranoid right now. And honestly, I'm getting a little worried about our own safety. If she's having these visions and we don't know what's going on..."
Aiden cut him off, his voice rising. "So, you're saying you think she's a danger to us? That's not fair, Ethan."
Ethan held up his hands. "I'm not saying that exactly. I just think we need to be careful and make sure we're all safe. None of us completely understand how the locket's power works or how to control it. That puts all of us in danger."
Aiden crossed his arms over his chest, his eyes flashing with anger. "You're saying that because you're scared of what might happen if Lilly loses control. You're scared of what might happen if she gets worse."
Ethan felt a surge of defensiveness. "I'm just being practical, Aiden. We can't ignore the possibility that something is seriously wrong with Lilly."
Aiden's voice dropped to a low growl. "You're always so logical, Ethan. You never consider the emotional side of things. You never consider how Lilly feels. I feel like you have only been concerned about these lockets and using the power from them. You seem a little obsessed always in your room, reading through mom’s journals."
Ethan felt a sting from the accusation, but he refused to back down. "I'm trying to protect us all, Aiden. And Lilly included. Yes, I am fascinated by the lockets, mom, the powers, all of it, but I would never let it get in between our relationship as brothers or as Lilly’s boyfriend."
The argument hung in the air like a challenge, neither twin willing to back down. They knew they needed to talk to Lilly about what was happening, but they also knew it wouldn't be easy.
As they sat there in silence, they couldn't shake the feeling that their relationship was starting to fray - like a thread pulled too tight.
To take their minds off things, Lilly and Jason decided to go and watch the twins play football on Saturday afternoon. They had been trying to stay inside locked away as much as possible, but they were stir-crazy, it would be good for them to get out and clear their heads.
As they walked onto the field, they were greeted by the familiar sight of cheering fans and the smell of hot dogs and popcorn. The atmosphere was electric, and for a few hours, they forgot about their troubles.
But as they watched the game, Lilly's instincts started to kick in. She could feel something strange in the air, a building energy that seemed to be growing by the minute. At first, she dismissed it as nerves or excitement, but as the sensation intensified, she knew something was off. Then she looked down at the locket around her neck, it was glowing a blue light just like before.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed through the stadium, followed by screams and panic. The crowd surged forward as people rushed towards the exits.
"What's going on?" Jason shouted above the din.
Lilly grabbed his arm. "I don't know, but I think it's connected to what I've been seeing!"
Jason turned around, his eyes scanning the chaos. "We need to get out of here! Find the twins."
As they pushed through the crowds, Lilly's powers flared up, amplifying her senses. She could feel the energy building, like a storm brewing on the horizon.
The twins came running up from the field as they found Jason and Lilly.
"Guys, I think we're running out of time!" she warned.
Ethan and Aiden exchanged a look of concern as they stumbled out of the stadium. But it was too late. A massive explosion rocked the ground beneath their feet, sending them flying.
As they struggled to get up, Lilly's eyes locked onto something in the distance - a figure emerging from the smoke and debris. It was a woman with piercing green eyes and long black hair...
Tiffany?
But it couldn't be. Tiffany was dead...
The twins' minds reeled as they stared at this new threat. Who was this woman? And what did she want?
As they stumbled out of the stadium, Lilly's powers were still reeling from the energy she had sensed. Ethan, Aiden, and Jason were shaken but unharmed, but Lilly was struggling to keep her emotions in check.
"I knew it," she spat, her voice trembling with anger. "I knew something was off."
Ethan and Aiden exchanged a concerned glance. "Lilly, calm down," Ethan said, trying to placate her.
But Lilly was beyond reason. "You guys didn't listen to me! You didn't take me seriously! And now... now this!"
Aiden took a step forward. "Lilly, we're trying to help you through this. We don't know what's going on, but we're here for you."
But Lilly was too far gone. "You're just saying that because you feel guilty! You're just trying to make me feel better so you can all go back to your normal lives."
Ethan stepped in, his voice firm but gentle. "Lilly, that's not fair. We care about you, and we want to help. Jason tried to wrap his arms around Lilly, but she pulled away.
Lilly wouldn't be swayed. "No, you don't! You don't understand what I'm going through. You don't understand what's happening to me! You guys have put all of this pressure and power on me with the locket."
The argument escalated until the twins were shouting at each other, their words lost in the din of the surrounding chaos. People were running past them, panicking and screaming, but Lilly and the guys were too caught up in their own drama to notice.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, they stood there, panting and angry. The argument had left them all feeling raw and exhausted.
"I need some space," Lilly said finally, her voice barely above a whisper.
Ethan and Aiden nodded, still looking at her with concern. "We understand," Ethan said.
Jason grabbed her this time pleading with her to stay, but as Lilly turned and walked away from them, the guys couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. What was happening to their friend? And what would happen next?
As they watched her go, they couldn't shake the feeling that they were losing her - losing the person they once knew and loved.
And then there was the matter of the mysterious woman who had appeared at the stadium...
