Chapter 45 Taking the Subway

Chapter 45 Taking the Subway

Klein had already learned from Jennifer during his last visit to the police station that a special department had taken over the Black Reaper case.

Should he keep some distance from Jennifer from now on? That special department obviously had deep connections with the police. If they noticed him through Jennifer, that would be bad.

Klein glanced at Jennifer, his guard already up, and he made up his mind. No matter what tasks Jennifer asked him to do in the future, he wouldn't participate anymore.

As for the reason, he just needed to discuss it with Carol. After all, he was Carol's assistant now. If the boss didn't let him go, what could an assistant do?

Just as Klein had figured out how to use Carol as his excuse, he heard Carol's worried voice.

"Is that organization called Black Widow really powerful? They failed to send an assassin this time. Will they keep sending more people?"

Jennifer couldn't answer this question. You couldn't expect a cop who dealt with petty thieves and street thugs to understand the brutal world of assassins.

"It's just an ordinary second-rate assassin organization. Their leader is a woman code-named Black Widow, and she simply used her own codename as the name of the organization. She's just a dried-up old woman who's hit menopause, so her personality is a bit twisted." Klein shrugged and shared what he knew.

Back when he was in Africa, he'd dealt with Black Widow's people once and understood their style.

Klein noticed both women were looking at him with surprise.

"How do you know about Black Widow?"

Jennifer looked at Klein suspiciously.

Klein's heart nearly skipped a beat. He realized he'd said too much. But years of battlefield experience kept his expression unchanged.

"Don't forget what I do. I'm a security instructor. These assassins are the natural enemies of our industry. If we don't understand our opponents, how can we defend against them?"

Klein spoke confidently and made perfect sense. At least Jennifer nodded seriously, clearly accepting his explanation.

But Carol narrowed her eyes and looked Klein up and down.

The security instructor position was something Carol had made up last time to deal with the police. She was once again curious about this man and why he knew so much about assassins.

"Do you know any other clues?"

Jennifer immediately pulled out her notebook, ready to take notes.

Klein looked at Jennifer's serious expression, and his mouth twitched.

"You have to understand, the head of an organization is usually very mysterious. I've only heard some things about Black Widow from others. The most I can tell you is that generally, after a failed mission, this type of assassin organization usually won't keep sending more assassins. After all, training a top assassin takes a lot of time and effort."

"Let me give you an example. If Black Widow herself were in the drug business and making huge profits, she would definitely spare no effort to take out Carol, because Carol would be blocking her money. But as I recall, Black Widow doesn't seem to be involved in the drug trade. So there shouldn't be too much to worry about," Klein continued.

Jennifer felt relieved, but soon became troubled again, because Black Widow wasn't the only organization targeting Carol.

Jennifer realized she couldn't get any useful leads and put down her pen and paper in frustration.

"Looks like that's all I'm getting."

Suddenly, Jennifer's phone rang at her waist. She glanced at the message and immediately turned off her phone.

"I got a call for backup. I need to support my colleagues. I've got to go."

Jennifer rushed out of the office and quickly disappeared from Klein's view.

Klein watched Jennifer leave, his eyes lingering on her backside for a few extra seconds. He had to admit, Jennifer had a great figure. Her swaying waist and lightly bouncing hips as she ran could easily stir up desire.

"Is what you said true?"

Carol's voice, tinged with coldness, rang out, instantly putting out the fire of desire in Klein's heart.

Klein looked at Carol helplessly. She had her arms crossed, frowning slightly, with a trace of worry in her eyes.

"If you're really afraid of those assassins, you shouldn't have come here today. You should've stayed in the villa. Will and the others would protect you."

Klein rolled his eyes. Sometimes Klein really couldn't tell whether Carol was brave or just brainless. After several assassination attempts, she still dared to come to the company alone.

Carol heard the mockery in Klein's words, snorted coldly, and said nothing more.

"I'm heading back to the villa. You're taking me."

Klein pointed at his own nose. "Me? Come on, my role today is assistant. My work schedule doesn't include taking you home today."

"I'm your boss, so you have to listen to me. As for your work, I'll have someone else do it. It's just a phone call."

Carol stood with one hand on her hip, her posture upright, her proud chest slightly rising. Clearly, she was very confident in her identity as the boss.

Klein's eyes swept over Carol's chest a few times.

"Alright, you're the biggest. I'll listen to you."

Carol felt Klein's words were strange, as if they had a deeper meaning, but she didn't dwell on it. Instead, she asked Klein,

"Should I have Will bring an armored car over?"

"Too much trouble. I don't want to stay at the company for another second. I just want to lie in bed and sleep."

Klein walked to the door and waved at Carol. "Wait here for me. I'll be right back."

Carol watched Klein leave. A few minutes later, Klein came back carrying a pile of clothes.

"You want me to wear these? Where did you get them?"

Carol looked at the pile of cheap, coarse fabric clothes and smelled the cheap perfume on them. She frowned and covered her nose.

"I spent a long time in the women's locker room looking for these clothes. I already told them you'd pay for everything."

Klein's words made Carol frown even more. She looked at Klein like he was a pervert.

"You actually went to the women's locker room?"

"I must emphasize, I had permission!"

Klein replied defensively, then stuffed all the clothes into Carol's arms.

"Alright, no time for nonsense. Hurry up and change into these clothes. The white swan needs to turn back into an ugly duckling. Only then will the assassins not target you."
