Chapter 194 Miss Davis
Chapter 194 Miss Davis
Cora's POV
His question caught me off guard, and I was at a loss for how to answer—last night had affected me in a way I couldn't deny. I wasn't happy about his visit to Carla, but I knew he had gone there to vent his anger. At the same time, I couldn't ignore how much it calmed me to know that there was no one else in his life.
I had longed for his closeness, and when he finally wrapped his arms around me again, I felt utterly powerless to push him away. Feeling his protective embrace made me forget everything that had happened to me lately, and I had no strength to refuse his offer to stay with me for the entire night.
When his lips touched mine, I realised it was only my mind that still fought against this feeling. My heart belonged to him, and despite some bad memories, I had to admit he was still the only man on Earth whom I could truly love.
I took a deep breath and looked at him.
"Do you want to take me out on a date?"
He smiled, looking at me like a nervous teenager.
"Yes. I want to invite you out on a date. Will you come with me?"
I shrugged my shoulders.
"I don't have any posh dresses to wear."
His smile widened.
"No need for posh dresses. You can dress however you want."
I chuckled.
"So, you mean I can wear worn jeans and a tank top?"
He chuckled as well.
"Yes, exactly."
I frowned. "Wouldn’t Mr. Astor be ashamed to show up with a nameless nobody?"
His expression became serious instantly.
"Cora, you aren’t a nameless nobody. For me, you are the best thing that could ever happen. You are the mother of my child, and the most beautiful and powerful woman I have ever known."
I looked into his eyes, and my instincts told me he was being honest.
I smiled. "I'll go out with you."
His smile returned, and for a few seconds, our gazes met, reminiscent of before.
We couldn’t talk longer, as Ellie came next to us, entertaining us with her play. However, when Mum told us she would speak to the new staff to prepare dinner, I excused myself and rushed inside after her.
"Mum!" I shouted when I reached her in the living room. She turned around and looked at me with a frown.
"What is it, Cora? Are you alright?"
"Yes, I just wanted to ask if you could take care of Ellie for me this evening."
She frowned more deeply. "Of course I can, but where do you want to go?"
I smiled slightly. "Spencer asked me to go out with him, and I agreed."
Mum's expression showed surprise before she sighed. "Of course, I can take care of her. I guess you won't be having dinner with us today."
I shook my head. "I don’t think so."
She caressed my arm. "Don't worry, darling, Ellie will be in good hands."
"Thank you, Mum!" I said, kissing her cheek before heading out to the garden, where I found my little one happily playing with her father.
I sat back on the grass and watched them with a smile.
After an hour, Spencer excused himself. He said he would head home to get ready and gently reminded me that I should do the same. He assured me he would be back shortly.
I wanted to stay with Ellie, but Mum took her from me. "Get inside and get ready. I'll take care of her."
I smiled, kissed Ellie's little cheek, and rushed back inside the house. Ellie looked after me with confusion, as if she thought I was leaving her with her nana, but Mum quickly caught her attention.
I showered, and even though I had mentioned wearing worn jeans and a tank top to Spencer, I opted for a lovely black-and-white dress that flattered my figure. I let my hair down and put on light makeup. When I looked in the mirror, I realised that there was nothing left of Cora Astor. I was Cora Davis, who had accidentally entered a wealthy family.
My biological mother's thin figure flashed through my mind, and for a moment, I wondered if she would be proud of me.
However, I didn’t have much time to think about this, as someone knocked on my door. I opened it to find Mum standing there. She stepped inside the room and closed the door behind her.
“Cora, you look beautiful,” she said.
I smiled at her. “Thank you, Mum.” But as I spoke, I noticed she looked a bit troubled.
“What is it?” I encouraged her to share her thoughts.
“Spencer is here.”
“Oh. I’m ready.”
“I know, but before you go...” She took my hand and looked into my eyes. “Cora, you need to understand how important both of you are to me. I don’t want either of you to get hurt again.”
I stared at her, trying to read her expression.
“Mum, believe me when I say I don’t want to get hurt again.”
“I know. It's just…” She sighed. “I realise Spencer has hurt you deeply and made unforgivable mistakes. I’ve had enough of seeing my children suffer. I want to ask you, Cora, not to give him false hope if you still feel unable to forgive him.”
I sighed, feeling the weight of her words.
“You don’t need to worry about this, Mum. I’ve thought about it a lot.”
She looked at me with curiosity.
“I was very angry with him at first. I felt betrayed. I don’t believe I could ever truly forgive the things he said back then, but I also know he wouldn’t have said those things if he hadn’t been manipulated. I still love him; he is the father of my only child.” I chuckled in frustration. “I want the best for all of us. I know I couldn’t be happy without him, and if he says he feels the same way, then I want to keep our little family together.”
Mum smiled warmly at me and pulled me close to kiss my forehead.
"I’m happy for you, then. He’s in the living room, waiting for you."
I nodded. "I’ll be there in a minute."
She nodded and then left my room. I took a deep breath, and for some reason, I smiled.
My smile stayed on my face as I walked into the living room and saw Spencer there, wearing jeans and a white shirt.
"Can we go?" he asked.
