Chapter 17 The Storm That Wouldn’t Go

Chapter 17 The Storm That Wouldn’t Go
The next morning, the world felt heavier than usual.

Even with Kylen beside me, even with his hand warm in mine, even with the relief that we had chosen each other, I could not shake the tension that pressed on my chest. It was not over. Not yet.

Because Lilibeth was still out there.

Her shadow had not left. It never would.

I knew the moment I stepped onto campus. Whispers followed me like they were stitched into my clothes. Phones flicked up. People glanced, murmured, smirked. And at the center of all of it, like a predator waiting for her prey, Lilibeth watched from across the quad.

Kylen stayed close. His arm brushed mine, grounding me. “Ignore her,” he murmured. His jaw was tight. His dark eyes burned with a silent warning.

I wanted to believe I could, but I knew better. Lilibeth had a way of making every rumor, every glance, every word hit harder than it should. And today, I had a feeling, she was planning her next move.

We passed her without a word. She smiled faintly, a smile that did not reach her eyes. I felt it cut deeper than I expected. The kind of smile that promised chaos.

By the time we reached the hockey arena, my nerves were frayed. Kylen was quiet, more focused than usual. His tension matched mine, and I could feel it radiating off him in sharp waves. The locker room was a mess of equipment, sweat, and shouts. The team was restless. And I could see immediately that things were off.

Coach’s face was stormy when we entered. “Kylen,” he barked. “We need to talk.”

Kylen’s jaw tightened, but he nodded. I followed silently, feeling like I was intruding into a war zone I had no business being in.

Coach leaned in, voice low but fierce. “You cannot let personal life interfere with your game. The sponsors are talking. The press is talking. Your teammates are frustrated. And the fans… don’t get me started.”

Kylen’s fists clenched. “I know.”

“You know, or you don’t care,” Coach snapped. “Because right now it looks like a mess. And it all started with her.” He gestured vaguely, leaving me with a sinking feeling in my stomach.

I opened my mouth to protest, but Kylen shook his head. “It’s not her fault,” he said, voice low but firm. “It’s mine. Everything I do, every choice I make, is mine.”

I felt a swell of pride, but it was bittersweet. Even now, he was still carrying the blame that was never his alone.

The door opened suddenly. And there she was. Lilibeth.

She had no reason to be here. No permission. No invitation. But she walked in anyway, her heels clicking against the floor, her eyes sharp and calculating. Every head turned, and I could feel the room tilt toward her like she owned it.

“Lilibeth,” Coach said, frowning. “What are you doing here.”

“I came to see Kylen,” she said sweetly. Too sweetly. Her eyes flicked to me. “Of course, I heard about… everything.”

I wanted to speak. To tell her she had no right. But Kylen’s hand brushed against mine, small and firm, grounding me. His eyes found mine, warning me silently. Let me handle this.

Kylen stepped forward, his posture rigid. “You are not welcome here,” he said. His voice was low but deadly.

She laughed, a soft, dangerous sound. “Oh, Kylen, always so dramatic. I just wanted to see the aftermath. To see if she had ruined you completely.”

I felt a jolt in my chest.

Kylen’s eyes darkened. “She has nothing to do with that,” he said. “Now leave.”

Her smile widened. “I think you’ll find I can do whatever I want.”

I opened my mouth to speak, but Kylen turned to me sharply. “Don’t say a word.”

Lilibeth’s eyes flicked to me, sharp and gleaming with malice. “Still so loyal,” she said. “Even after everything. How touching.”

Kylen stepped closer to me, shielding me, his presence like a wall. “Enough,” he said, voice low and dangerous.

She tilted her head, studying him, then me. “You really think you’ve won, don’t you?” she said softly. “You think your little reunion solves everything. But you’re just delaying the storm.”

Something inside me tightened. “What do you want,” I said, trying to keep my voice calm.

She smiled faintly. “I want him. And if I cannot have him, I want to watch you lose him completely.”

Kylen’s jaw clenched. His fists were tight at his sides. “This ends now,” he said. “Or I will make sure it ends with you out of here.”

She laughed again. “Oh, Kylen. You’re not as powerful as you think. But it’s cute that you try.”

I felt a wave of panic, helplessness, and fury. She was here to destroy him. To destroy us. And I realized something terrifying. I could no longer stand on the sidelines. I could not just watch anymore.

“I am not afraid of you,” I said, stepping forward, my voice steady despite the tremor in my chest. “And you are not going to hurt him. Not anymore.”

Her eyes narrowed. “Oh, you are brave,” she said. “Or maybe foolish. Maybe both.”

Kylen placed his hand over mine, gripping it tightly. “Lenora…”

“I know what I am doing,” I said. “We are done running. All of us. This stops here.”

She smirked. “Bold words. But words are cheap.”

Kylen stepped in front of me fully now, blocking her view. “We don’t need words. We need action,” he said.

Suddenly, the tension in the room snapped. Lilibeth’s expression shifted from smug confidence to something more dangerous. She made a sudden move, stepping closer, invading his space.

Kylen reacted instantly, chest forward, protective, his eyes blazing with fire. “Stay away from her,” he said.

“I’m not the one you should be protecting,” she said, her voice venomous. “She’s the reason everything fell apart. And you love her. That makes it worse.”

I stepped forward. “She doesn’t control us,” I said firmly. “I don’t care what you say, Lilibeth. We are done letting fear rule us. You are not going to destroy this. You are not going to destroy him.”

Kylen’s hand found mine again, holding it tight. “She is done,” he said. “We are done.”

For the first time, Lilibeth’s confident mask faltered. Her eyes flicked between us, realizing that we were no longer separate, no longer vulnerable, no longer alone.

She smiled faintly, but it was not the same. “This isn’t over,” she whispered.

“No,” I said, my voice firm. “It is over for us. You lost the power the moment you tried to control what we have. We are stronger than your lies. Stronger than your games. And stronger than your fear.”

Kylen pulled me into his arms. The warmth, the safety, the undeniable force of him pressed against me, grounding me, reminding me that we were together. He whispered in my ear, “You are mine. And nothing will change that.”

I closed my eyes, letting the truth of it sink in. For weeks I had been afraid. Afraid of losing him, afraid of the world, afraid of the chaos Lilibeth thrived on. But now I knew. The fear was gone.

We were together.

And no one could touch that.

Not her. Not rumors. Not consequences.

Together, we could survive anything.

And finally, I let myself believe it.
