Chapter 153 The Day We Became Three

Chapter 153 The Day We Became Three
Eight months later, the first snow of winter drifted over New York City.

Lenora stood in the nursery, one hand braced against her lower back and the other resting on her very round stomach.

The room was almost finished.

Soft cream walls.

A white crib.

A rocking chair in the corner.

Tiny hockey-themed onesies hanging neatly in the closet.

And above the crib, a framed quote Lenold had insisted on ordering:

You were loved before we even knew your name.

Lenora smiled and rubbed her belly.

“You have no idea how obsessed your dad already is.”

A sharp kick answered her.

She laughed.

“Exactly.”

Strong arms wrapped around her from behind.

Lenold pressed a kiss to her temple.

“Are you talking about me again?”

Lenora leaned back against him.

“Always.”

He slid his hands over her stomach.

His expression softened as the baby kicked against his palm.

Blue eyes widening, he grinned.

“There she is.”

They had found out at twenty weeks that they were having a girl.

Lenold had cried harder than Lenora did.

And from that moment on, their daughter had become the center of his world.

He kissed Lenora’s shoulder.

“How are my girls?”

Lenora smiled.

“One of us is kicking your hand.”

He knelt in front of her, pressing his lips to her belly.

“Easy in there, princess. Your mom has done all the hard work.”

Another kick made him laugh.

Lenora threaded her fingers through his hair.

Watching him with their daughter was one of the greatest joys of her life.

He looked at her as though he still couldn’t believe this was real.

“I love you,” he said softly.

Tears pricked her eyes.

“I love you too.”

Three days later, at two-thirteen in the morning, Lenora woke with a sharp pain in her lower abdomen.

She inhaled sharply.

Another contraction followed ten minutes later.

Then another.

Her hands shook as she nudged Lenold awake.

“Baby.”

He stirred.

“Mmm?”

“I think it’s time.”

His eyes flew open.

For one stunned second, he froze.

Then he launched out of bed so quickly he nearly tripped over the comforter.

Lenora burst out laughing between contractions.

“Lenold.”

He yanked on sweatpants.

“Hospital. Right. Bag. Shoes.”

He sprinted into the nursery and returned with the hospital bag and the stuffed bunny he had bought for their daughter.

“Okay. I’m ready.”

Lenora smiled through the pain.

“You forgot your shirt.”

He looked down at his bare chest.

“Right.”

At NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, labor moved faster than anyone expected.

Lenold never left Lenora’s side.

He held her hand through every contraction.

Wiped her forehead.

Whispered encouragement into her ear.

At one point, Lenora glared at him.

“This is your fault.”

Lenold nodded solemnly.

“Completely fair.”

She laughed despite herself.

Hours later, exhaustion settled into every part of her body.

“I can’t do this.”

Lenold kissed her damp forehead.

“Yes, you can.”

His eyes shone with tears.

“You’re the strongest person I know.”

Lenora squeezed his hand.

And when the doctor said it was time to push, she gave everything she had.

Then, at 11:46 a.m., the room filled with the unmistakable cry of a newborn baby.

Lenora sobbed.

Lenold openly wept.

The nurse laid a tiny pink-faced baby girl on Lenora’s chest.

Their daughter blinked up at them with dark hair and a surprisingly loud opinion.

Lenora touched her tiny fingers.

“Hi, baby.”

Lenold pressed a trembling kiss to Lenora’s temple.

“She’s perfect.”

The words broke on a sob.

Lenora looked up at him.

“So are you.”

He kissed her, tears streaming freely.

“I love you.”

She smiled through happy tears.

“We made her.”

When the nurse asked for the baby’s name, Lenora looked at Lenold.

They had debated for months.

But the moment they saw her, both knew.

Lenold stroked their daughter’s soft hair.

“Her name is Elena Grace Davenport.”

Lenora smiled.

Elena.

A name that felt strong and beautiful.

Grace, for the quiet strength that had carried them through every storm.

The nurse wrote it down.

And just like that, their daughter had a name.

Family and friends flooded the hospital room later that afternoon.

Lilibeth cried so hard she ruined her mascara.

Pamela presented a monogrammed baby blanket.

Kylen held Elena with surprising tenderness and whispered, “You’ve got everyone wrapped around your finger already.”

Lenora’s mother kissed her granddaughter and wiped away tears.

“She’s beautiful.”

Lenold stood beside Lenora’s bed, unable to stop staring at his daughter.

At one point, Pamela nudged Lenora.

“He hasn’t blinked in fifteen minutes.”

Lenora smiled.

“He’s in love.”

Pamela softened.

“You both are.”

That night, after visitors left and the hospital room grew quiet, Lenora watched Lenold rock Elena in the dim light.

Their daughter slept peacefully against his chest.

Lenold looked overwhelmed.

Awed.

Terrified.

In love.

He glanced up and met Lenora’s gaze.

His eyes shimmered.

“I didn’t know it was possible to love someone this much.”

Lenora smiled.

“I know.”

He walked to the bed and carefully placed Elena in Lenora’s arms.

Then he climbed in beside them, wrapping one arm around his wife and the other around their daughter.

Lenora rested her head on his shoulder.

Elena made a tiny sigh and settled between them.

For a long moment, no one spoke.

They simply stared at the little girl who had changed everything.

Lenold kissed Lenora’s forehead.

“Thank you.”

She looked up at him.

“For what?”

His voice was thick with emotion.

“For giving me this life.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“You gave it to me too.”

He smiled and touched Elena’s tiny hand.

Outside, snow continued to fall over the city that had become their home.

Inside, wrapped together in a hospital bed, Lenora felt a peace deeper than words.

They had started as two stubborn teenagers.

They had weathered heartbreak, distance, secrets, and dreams.

And now, after every challenge, they had arrived here.

Not at an ending.

But at the most beautiful beginning of all.

Their family.

And as Elena slept safely between them, Lenora knew with absolute certainty that this was the happiest chapter of their story yet.
