It is still a little crazy to think....My stepbrothers
Violet

The world tilted on its axis, a spinning mess that would have sent me to the floor if I wasn’t pinned so securely between two hard, solid bodies. The kitten, fed up with being squashed, made a new home on my shoulder.

Had I fallen through a crack in the world? Maybe that almond milk my mother gave me was poisoned, and this was some kind of hallucination before I died. Seriously, what kind of man buys his girlfriend a whole fucking house for her nineteenth birthday?

But the cost of it wasn’t what stunned me. It was the meaning behind it.

It was the fact that Richard and Michael understood. They knew that for the last three years, my whole life had been shaky, a series of temporary stops, never knowing what would happen next… and it had been fucking scary.

When my dad died, my home disappeared. So did my feeling of being safe. I just followed my mother from one man’s house to another, knowing I was baggage, knowing I was depending on the kindness of men I did not know. I thought I had built a wall around my heart. I thought I was tough enough to take it. I thought I had made myself hard.

But deep down… the damage was so much worse than I had let myself see. I had only just started to talk about those broken pieces with my art therapist.

And yet, Richard and Michael had reached right into the center of that pain.

If they had just gotten a place and asked me to move in, I would have always felt like it could end. I would have believed they could ask me to leave, that we could break up, and I would be back on the street. I would have kept living with my whole life packed into two old suitcases, always ready to run.

But Richard gave the house to me. Even if everything fell apart, this was mine.

I do not think he truly knew what that did to me.

"I have given you a home."

Or maybe he did. I could not stop the tears anymore. They broke free, and I started to cry. Michael carefully lifted the kitten from my shoulder and placed her on the concrete floor. Then I was wrapped up by both of them, surrounded completely. Michael’s mouth found mine in a kiss that was soft and kind, giving me every bit of comfort I was desperate for.

When he pulled away, Richard turned my face to his. His kiss was not gentle. It was hungry, and a little wild. It felt like he had been the one feeling insecure, and now he needed me to make him feel sure again, something I was more than willing to do. A hand slid under my shirt, and I felt that warm, familiar pressure building low in my belly… along with a sweet, aching reminder of what we had done last night. I pulled my mouth from Richard’s. "Wait, you need to slow down," I breathed, wiping the tears from my wet face.

Michael gave me a look that could make any woman say yes to anything. "You are going to let us live here with you, right?"

The kitten, missing the warmth of our group, started climbing Richard’s leg. I bent down and picked her up. "Are you going to do your share of the work?" I asked him, cradling my little prize. I kissed her fuzzy head. "Miss Kitty is going to need someone to clean her litter box.."

The pure disgust on Michael’s face was amazing. "Can we not just teach her to use the yard?" He nudged Richard in the arm. "I told you we should have gotten a dog!"

Richard rubbed the back of his neck. "Well, I saw an advertisement for these boxes that clean themselves now…"

I tipped my head back and laughed. "I love you two, I really do! Oh, can I please go see upstairs?"

They let me go, though they were clearly reluctant, and I hurried to the spiral staircase. It made a soft metal sound as I went up to the loft, where the big, open area was split into several rooms. One was clearly meant to be the main bedroom, since it had a bathroom attached that was not quite finished, with a giant tub and a shower with multiple nozzles. "We did not pick out any tiles or things like that," Richard explained, "We wanted you to be the one to choose… I hope the shower and tub are all right. If not, we can change them."

"It is perfect." I let out a happy breath. "All of it is perfect." I looked over the big bedroom space. "Can we get a huge bed in here? One big enough for all three of us?"

"Well, it is funny you should ask…" Richard looked at his watch. "Since we have to leave the Grand tomorrow, I went ahead and ordered some furniture to rent. The delivery truck should be here by ten in the morning. Just a few things to use until you have finished making the place your own. I also got a gas barbecue and some things for the kitchen…"

I laughed, the love and thanks inside me so big I thought my heart would break from it. I put one arm around Michael’s waist, and one around Richard, and pulled us all close. Like the necklace I wore and the pattern on my rings, I was the symbol that held our three hearts together, forever.

It was magic, the way we just belonged.

"You know," I said, leaning my head to gaze down over the railing at the huge, open space below us. "It is still a little crazy to think you two almost became my stepbrothers."
