Chapter 51 Chapter 51
Elari
I’d been to several games since coming to Frostveil and each one of them had been brutal but it was nothing like this.
Kade skated like he always did. Like an athlete at the top of his game , the magic he threw always hit its target with pinpoint accuracy. He was mesmerising to watch.
“I thought you were joking.” Issi said from next to me. Drawing my attention away from the man on the ice that I definitely shouldn’t be watching.
I raised my eyebrow in question. The small flag in my hand frozen in midair. Was she talking about my feelings for Kade? I couldn’t help it I blushed. “It’s not-“
From below on the ice Rivan skated past, flashing a smile up at me that I returned without thinking. Lifting my hand to give him a little wave.
“When you and Rivan came back last night and told us you were together I honestly thought it was just some prank. But then I saw you together today.” She fanned herself with her flag. “The way you kissed him.”
Rowans head snapped around. “You and Rivan kissed?” She couldn’t hide the shock in her voice.
“Not like a massive make out session or anything like that. Kade started to try and drag Elari away and then Rivan came to her defence.” She grinned from ear to ear. “It was so fucking romantic. And the way he just looked at you.” She fanned me. “How are you not swooning where you stand?”
I shrugged. How the hell could I answer that. Yes all of that had happened but I wasn’t actually with Rivan. Not that I could tell anyone that. Not even my best friends. Which kind of sucked because I hated keeping things from them.
“But at the Yule ball-“ Rowan began to say and shook her head. “I just didn’t think you were that into him. Guess I was wrong.”
Frowning, I stared at her. Something was going on with her but before I could ask a commotion down on the ice forced all our eyes downward.
Kade was skating like a machine, his shoulders down as he body slammed into someone. Someone wearing the same jersey he was.
“Rivan.” I cried out his name but it was swept away as hundred of people teachers include screamed in excitement.
Not content with just slamming the younger boy into the plexiglass Kade ripped his helmet off and began to rain down blows onto Rivans head and face with his closed fist.
“Holy shit.” My trembling hand was caught in Issi’s and she squeezed my fingers. I couldn’t watch. I cared about them both. Screwing my eyes shut I turned away.
“Oh my goddess.” Rowan screamed. “What is he doing?”
My head snapped around.
“He’s shifting. Kade is fucking shifting.”
And he was. Claws erupted from the tips of his fingers, his eyes under his dark hair had changed. His teeth elongated so they were too big for his mouth.
Snarls filled the air. Kades snarls. I didn’t know if Rivan had his animal. And even if he did, he couldn’t win again Kade.
Kade was going to kill him.
The whole stadium erupted in panic. Both teams and half of the professors tore across the ice to break up the fight before any one was seriously hurt.
“Where is-“
I found Rivan on the floor. Curled up in a ball, with his arms over his face and head. The ice was stained red with his blood. I moved without thinking. Pushing against the crowd that was running for the doors. Screams of rogue on their tongues.
They thought Kade had gone bad, had gone rouge. Losing control of your wolf was unacceptable.
I hit the ice and slipped. Landing hard on my back just as Kade was dragged away. For a second our eyes clashed. His wolf stared back at me. Not angry, not anymore there was pain in them.
Pain and a sort of begging.
He hadn’t gone rogue. His lack of control had been because of me. Because of how he felt about me. Only he couldn’t tell anyone that. Neither one of us could.
Something on my wrist started to itch but I ignored it as I scrambled to my feet.
“Lari.” He mouthed my name. Silently begging me. Tears swam in my eyes but I didn’t let them fall. I couldn’t do this anymore. I couldn’t keep falling for him. Not only was it wrong because he was my step brother but it was wrong because he kept betraying me. He was just like his father, willing to do anything for power. Even betray his-
I wouldn’t let myself think the words. It didn’t matter what name I gave it. It ended tonight. Turning my back on him I fell to my knees at Rivan's side.
“Is he ok?” Scrambling for his hand I was elbowed out of the way by one of the healers and fell on my ass again. No one answered me. Instead they lifted him, as carefully and as gently as they could.
“Can I come with him.” I rushed after them. “I’m his-“ shit what was I meant to say here? Friend? Girlfriend? “I care about him.” At least that wasn’t a lie.
One of the younger healers, a woman with kind eyes but a pinched mouth turned to me. “Not tonight. He’s in a bad way.”
I knew that, I had seen the blood. “He shouldn’t be alone.” I whispered.
“He won’t be. The best thing you can do is go with your friends back to your dorm. I’m sure you will be able to visit with Rivan tomorrow.”
I wanted to argue back with her but at that moment Issi came and took my hand. “Come on Elari. We need to leave. Everyone has been ordered back to the dorm.” She tugged at my hand and I slid across the ice.
“Go on without me.” I yanked my hand back from hers.
Her eyes widened. “Where are you going?” She called after me as I turned and walked in the other direction. “Elari?”
I lifted a hand in a small dismissive wave. “I’ll be right behind you. I just need to sort something out.”
The thing I needed to sort out? My out of control step brother. One way or another.
This thing between us ended tonight
