Crossing Over 2
I swallowed hard, the scent of damp earth curling in my lungs. “I need to go.”
“Then listen carefully.” His gaze sharpened like a blade unsheathed. “Don’t get attached. Don’t meddle in their messes. Don’t carry their pain. It will drown you.”
I didn’t answer. Because part of me already knew I would ignore every one of those warnings.
He laid a hand on my shoulder. Warm. Heavy.
“If it starts pulling you under,” he said, “remember who you are. And remember where to come home.”
He guided me to the farthest edge of the garden, where moss-coated stones shaped an arch. Ivy curled through the cracks, hiding the markings etched into them by generations before us. A portal. One that didn’t open for just anyone.
“When you're ready,” he said, “step through. It’ll take you there.”
He hesitated, then pulled me in for a rough hug. No words. Just a father's touch, brief and fierce.
And then he was gone swallowed by the woods.
I stood there, staring at the gate.
My hand trembled as I reached for the stone. A gust of warm wind rushed through it, whispering promises I wasn’t sure I believed.
For the first time in my life, I didn’t feel like a prince.
I didn’t feel like a wolf.
I felt like a boy trying to forget the girl who made him believe he could be loved then shattered that belief in one quiet decision.
I stepped into the portal, the world around me dissolving into starlight and wind.
Whatever waited on the other side, it couldn’t hurt worse than this.
