Chapter 51 Maya's Evidence
The courtyard froze. Every eye turned to Maya, who stood on the platform steps clutching a leather satchel to her chest. Her face was pale but determined, her hands shaking but her voice clear.
"I have letters." She held up the satchel. "Letters between Lady Margot and Lord Garrett. Planning everything. The evidence. The frame. All of it."
"This is absurd." Margot's voice carried across the courtyard. "A desperate servant inventing stories to save her mistress."
"They're not stories!" Maya's voice rose. "I found them hidden in Lady Margot's chambers. Three nights ago when she sent me to fetch her cloak. I saw a loose floorboard. Found letters underneath." She pulled out folded parchment. "Letters that prove Lady Lila was framed. That prove someone else killed the Queen."
Councilor Thorne stepped forward. "Bring those letters here. Now."
Maya climbed the platform with shaking legs. Handed the satchel to Thorne. He pulled out the letters, unfolding them carefully. His expression changed as he read. Shock. Confusion. Dawning realization.
"These are." He stopped. Started again. "These discuss gathering evidence against Lady Lila. Planting items in her chambers. Creating circumstances that would make her look guilty."
"Forgeries." Margot's voice stayed calm. "Obviously created by Lady Lila's servant to cast doubt. Anyone could write letters and claim they're mine."
"The handwriting matches samples we have from your official correspondence." Thorne compared documents. "And they're sealed with your personal mark. The one you use on private letters."
"Then someone stole my seal and forged both handwriting and mark." Margot's face showed perfect confusion. "Your Grace, think logically. If I had actually written such damaging letters, would I keep them where a servant could find them? Would I not destroy evidence of conspiracy?"
"Unless you're arrogant enough to think no one would look." Maya's voice shook but held firm. "Unless you thought yourself too clever to be caught."
"Or unless a desperate servant planted false evidence knowing her mistress faces execution." Margot turned to the council. "I've served this court faithfully for years. Helped investigate the Queen's death. Provided testimony to seek justice. And now I'm accused based on letters that conveniently appear at the exact moment needed to save the real murderer?"
"They're not false!" Maya pulled out another document. "There's more. A record of payments. Gold paid to the weapons master who crafted the darts. Paid by Lord Garrett three months before the Queen's death."
All eyes turned to Garrett. His face had gone pale but recovered quickly. "I commission many weapons. Darts included. I'm an avid hunter. Of course I've paid the weapons master."
"For poison darts specifically designed to panic horses?" Maya's voice gained confidence. "The records show exact specifications. Small. Easily concealed. Tipped with mare's bane and blackthorn essence. The exact poison found in the Queen's horse."
"Circumstantial." Garrett's voice was smooth. "Many hunters use such darts for difficult prey. It proves nothing about the Queen's death."
"It proves you had access to the murder weapon." Thorne's voice was hard. "It proves you could have shot the Queen's horse."
"Could have. But didn't." Garrett spread his hands. "I loved Celeste. Tried to save her. Nearly died in the attempt. You're accusing an innocent man based on purchase records any hunter might have."
The council erupted in argument. Some demanding Margot and Garrett be arrested immediately. Others claiming the evidence was too convenient, too perfectly timed. Still others saying it at least created reasonable doubt about Lila's guilt.
Through it all, Lila hung from the post, her back screaming with pain from ten lashes. Blood soaked through her shift, dripped onto stone. But hope surged through the agony. Hope that maybe, finally, someone would see the truth.
Adrian still knelt on the ground where he'd collapsed. But she felt him stirring through the bond. Felt his attention shift from self-loathing to these new revelations. Felt his mind working through implications.
"Enough." His voice cut through the chaos. He stood slowly, each movement deliberate. "Cut Lady Lila down. Get her medical attention. Now."
"Your Majesty, the punishment isn't complete." Thorne protested. "The council requires."
"The council requires nothing while new evidence is being examined." Adrian's voice carried absolute authority. "Lady Lila will not hang, will not suffer further, until we've investigated these letters thoroughly. Cut. Her. Down."
Guards moved to obey. They released the ropes binding her wrists. Lila's legs gave out, unable to support her after the flogging. She would have fallen but Adrian caught her. Lifted her carefully, mindful of her ravaged back. Held her against his chest like something precious and breaking.
The crowd gasped. The King openly holding his accused mate. The King carrying her himself instead of letting guards handle it. The King choosing her over propriety for the first time in three years.
"Your Majesty, this is inappropriate." A councilor objected. "You're showing bias. Claiming her publicly."
"I'm claiming what's mine." Adrian's voice was steel. "My mate. Given to me by the Moon Goddess. Mine to protect, mine to care for, mine to defend. And anyone who objects can challenge me directly."
No one challenged. Adrian walked through the parted crowd carrying Lila's bloody body. Walked straight to her chambers. Kicked the door open. Laid her gently on her bed, face down to keep pressure off her destroyed back.
"Maya." He called without turning. "Get the healer. Get bandages. Get anything she needs. Now."
Maya rushed to obey. Lila lay trembling on her bed, tears finally falling now that she was away from watching eyes. The pain was incredible. Fire across her entire back. Every breath agony.
Adrian knelt beside the bed, his hands hovering over her wounds. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry." The words tumbled out like prayer. "Forgive me. Please forgive me. I hurt you. I hurt my mate. I."
"Stop." Lila's voice was weak. "You saved me. Ten lashes instead of hanging. You gave me life."
"I gave you scars. I gave you pain. I proved every terrible thing everyone's ever said about me." His hands shook. "I'm my father. Cruel and cold and willing to hurt people I'm supposed to protect."
"You're nothing like your father." She tried to reach for him but movement sent fresh agony through her back. "You're a good man forced into impossible choices. You did what you had to. I forgive you."
"You shouldn't. You should hate me. Should curse the day the Moon Goddess bound you to someone who'd whip you in a courtyard for the whole kingdom to see."
"I could never hate you." Her voice was gentle despite her pain. "You're my mate. My other half. My everything. Ten lashes or ten thousand. I'd still choose you. Still love you. Still trust you."
The words broke something in Adrian. He pressed his forehead against the bed beside her, his whole body shaking with sobs. "I don't deserve you. Don't deserve your forgiveness. Don't deserve the bond."
"Good thing the Moon Goddess doesn't care what we deserve." Lila forced a weak smile. "She cares what we need. And we need each other. Even broken. Even bleeding. Even in this mess we're drowning in."
Iris arrived with supplies. Pushed Adrian aside gently. Examined Lila's back with careful hands. "Ten lashes. Not thirty. Could have been so much worse." She began cleaning wounds. "You're lucky the King's control broke when it did."
"Lucky." The word tasted bitter. But Lila supposed it was true. Ten lashes she might survive. Thirty would have destroyed her.
Adrian watched Iris work, his face gray with guilt. Through the bond, Lila felt his self-hatred. Felt him replaying each strike, each moment of hurting her, each second of choosing duty over protection.
"Stop torturing yourself." She whispered. "What's done is done. Now we focus on those letters. On proving Margot and Garrett framed me."
"The letters only prove they manipulated evidence. They don't prove who actually killed Celeste." Adrian's voice was hollow. "Margot's right about one thing. The timing is suspicious. Convenient that Maya found them exactly when needed to stop your execution."
"You think Maya forged them?" Lila tried to look at him but Iris held her still.
"I think we need to verify everything before celebrating." Adrian stood, pacing. "I think Margot and Garrett are smart enough to have planted false evidence to disc
redit real accusations. I think." He stopped. "I think I don't know what to believe anymore."
