Chapter 49 The Night Before

Chapter 49 The Night Before

The hours after the trial dragged like years. Lila sat in her chambers watching shadows lengthen across the floor, counting down to dawn when she'd face the whip. When Adrian would be forced to hurt her to save her life.

Thirty lashes. The number echoed in her mind. Thirty strikes of leather across bare skin. Thirty moments of agony that would either break them completely or bind them through shared suffering.

Maya brought dinner but the food turned to ash in Lila's mouth. The servant didn't speak. Just held her hand and cried silently while darkness fell outside.

"You should rest, my lady." Maya finally whispered. "Tomorrow will be. You need strength."

"I can't sleep." Lila's voice was hollow. "How can I sleep knowing what's coming?"

Through the bond, she felt Adrian pacing his chambers. Felt his wolf clawing at his insides, howling with rage at what duty demanded. Felt him drinking to dull the pain but finding no relief. The bond between them was raw, exposed, bleeding with shared dread.

Footsteps approached her door near midnight. Not guards. These steps she knew in her bones. The lock turned. Adrian entered looking like a ghost, his face drawn and gray.

"Leave us." He ordered Maya without looking at the servant. His voice was rough, barely controlled.

Maya glanced at Lila, who nodded. The servant left quickly, locking the door behind her. Leaving them alone for what might be the last time.

They stood facing each other across the dim room. The bond pulsed between them, aching and desperate and terrified.

"I can't do it." Adrian's words came out broken. "They're asking me to whip my own mate. To take a weapon and hurt the one person my wolf exists to protect. I can't."

"You have to." Lila's voice was steadier than she felt. "If you refuse, I hang. This is the only way I survive."

"Surviving broken isn't surviving." He moved closer, his hands shaking. "Thirty lashes will tear your back apart. Will leave scars that never fully heal. Will hurt you in ways I." His voice broke. "I'm supposed to protect you. Not destroy you."

"You're not destroying me. You're saving me." She closed the distance between them, took his trembling hands. "Adrian, I know what tomorrow means. Know what you're being forced to do. And I forgive you. Before it even happens, I forgive you."

"How can you forgive something this terrible?"

"Because I understand." Her grip tightened. "You're trapped between duty and bond. Between law and love. You're doing what you must to keep me alive, even though it kills you. That's not cruelty. That's sacrifice."

"It feels like cruelty." He pulled her against his chest, his whole body shaking. "It feels like betraying everything the bond means. Like proving everyone right who says we're cursed."

"We're not cursed. We're tested." Lila pressed her face against his shoulder, breathing in his scent. Pine and snow and something wild that belonged only to him. "The Moon Goddess is testing whether the bond is stronger than pain. Whether we can survive the worst and still choose each other."

"What if we can't? What if tomorrow breaks us beyond repair?"

"Then we break together." She pulled back enough to meet his eyes. "But I don't think we will. I think the bond is stronger than whips and blood and forced choices. I think tomorrow proves how much we're willing to endure for each other."

Adrian's hands came up to frame her face, his touch gentle despite his trembling. "I've never hated being king more than I do right now. Never hated duty more. Never wanted to throw away my crown and run as badly as I do in this moment."

"But you won't. Because you're a good king. Because the kingdom needs you." She leaned into his touch. "And because running won't save me. Only facing tomorrow will."

"How are you so strong?" His voice carried wonder mixed with devastation. "How are you comforting me when you're the one about to suffer?"

"Because I can feel what this is doing to you through the bond. Can feel you dying inside. And that hurts worse than any whip." She kissed his palm. "Your pain is my pain, Adrian. Always has been. Tomorrow just makes that literal."

They stood holding each other as midnight bells rang. As the final hours before dawn ticked away. As the bond between them sang with desperate connection, trying to memorize every sensation before pain tore through them.

"Stay with me tonight." Lila whispered. "Don't leave. Don't face this alone. Let us have these hours before."

"I shouldn't. Being near you makes everything harder."

"Let it be hard. Let us feel everything." She pulled him toward her bed. "Tomorrow we pretend. Tomorrow you're the king and I'm the criminal and we follow the script duty demands. But tonight, let us be mates. Nothing more. Nothing less."

They lay down together, fully clothed, just holding each other in the darkness. Adrian's arms wrapped around her. Lila's head rested on his chest, listening to his heartbeat racing with shared fear.

"Tell me about your mother." Lila broke the silence. "The one who planted the forgotten garden. The one you loved."

Adrian was quiet for so long she thought he wouldn't answer. Then his voice came soft, remembering. "She was gentle. Everything my father wasn't. She'd take me to that garden when he was being cruel. Would tell me stories about wolves who chose love over power. Who valued kindness over strength."

"She sounds wonderful."

"She died when I was ten. My father said she was weak. That kindness killed her." His arms tightened. "I promised myself I'd never be weak like her. Would never let caring about someone destroy me. Then I met you and." He stopped.

"And caring became unavoidable." Lila finished.

"And caring became everything." His lips pressed against her hair. "You made me feel things I thought my father beat out of me. Made me remember my mother's lessons about love being strength, not weakness. Made me human again instead of just king."

"I'm glad. Even if it brought us here." She traced patterns on his chest through his shirt. "Even if tomorrow tears us apart. I'm glad we had this. Glad the Moon Goddess chose you for me."

They talked through the dark hours. About childhood and dreams and the future they'd never have. About Theo and what would happen to him after she was banished. About the kingdom and the mate bond and whether love was worth this much suffering.

"Yes." Adrian answered that final question. "Love is worth everything. Even this. Even tomorrow. Even if we both break, at least we'll have felt something real in a world full of lies."

As dawn approached, they fell silent. Just holding each other. Just breathing together. Just existing in the final moments before pain shattered their peace.

The bond hummed between them, strong despite everything. Unbroken despite all attempts to fracture it. Still singing its song of completion, of rightness, of two souls meant to be one.

Gray light crept through the window. Adrian stirred, knowing he had to leave before guards came. Had to put distance between them before his wolf refused to let her go.

He stood slowly, looking down at her with so much devastation. "If I could take every lash myself, I would. If I could trade places, suffer for you, I'd do it without hesitation."

He whispered to her ears but she was dip in sleep to hear. He walked out slowly from the room. He didn't want to wake her up.

Lila opened her eyes to an empty space. Her hands still on the side where Adrain had lain. Her heart shattered knowing he had left. Knowing her time is come where she must say goodbye to everything she had ever loved.

After dressing up, she had footsteps approached. Heavy and multiple in rhythm. The guards coming to escort her to the courtyard. Coming to witness justice.

The guards knocked heavily on the door. They entered to take her as soon as she opened.

They bound her wrists. Led her from the chambers. As they descended stairs toward the courtyard where punishment waited, Lila felt Adrian's presence behind her. Felt his wolf howling. Felt his determination warring with his devastation.

And she sent one final message through the bond. Three words that car
ried all her love, all her forgiveness, all her faith that they'd survive this.

“I forgive you.“
