Chapter 82 Paternity Test
Chapter 82 Paternity Test
She stared hard at Susan, her eyes looking like they could see right through her.
"Just bail us out and give us some money." Susan greedily licked her cracked lips, throwing out her conditions. "Then I'll tell you about the jade pendant you had on you when we found you all those years ago. Otherwise, you can spend the rest of your life as an orphan with no parents."
After the initial shock, what rose up in Giselle's heart was an even deeper sense of absurdity and wariness.
She knew Susan too well. For money, this woman would make up any lie.
"You think I'd still believe you?" Giselle sneered, her eyes filled with icy coldness. "You'll really do anything to get me to save you."
With that, she turned around again and started walking away.
"I swear." Seeing she didn't believe her, Susan completely panicked. She raised three fingers and screamed at the ceiling. "Everything I'm saying is true. If there's one lie, let Stella and me rot in jail for the rest of our lives. If you don't believe me, go to the hospital. Let's go do a DNA test right now. See if I'm really your birth mother or not."
As if afraid Giselle wouldn't believe her, she turned to the nearby police officer, urgently promising. "Officer, I'm not lying. Everything I'm saying is true. You can be my witness."
That look of absolute certainty and swearing on her life really didn't seem like an act.
Giselle's mind was in chaos.
She could ignore Susan's abuse, ignore Stella's jealousy. But the words "birth parents" were the deepest thorn in her heart.
So all the unfairness and favoritism she had felt since childhood wasn't because she wasn't good enough or didn't try hard enough, but simply because she wasn't their biological child.
This realization felt absurd, yet it also gave her a strange sense of relief that things finally made sense.
She looked at Susan's face full of urgency and calculation, silent for a long time.
Finally, she took a deep breath, as if making some major decision.
She didn't agree to Susan's conditions. She just walked over to the officer taking notes, her voice calm without a ripple. "Officer, I'd like to request a DNA test with her."
The next day, the rush results came out.
Standing in the quiet hospital hallway, Giselle brushed her fingers over the flimsy report, which weighed heavily on her heart.
She took a deep breath and slowly opened it, her eyes falling on the conclusion in the last column.
In black and white, coldly stating a fact.
Biological relationship excluded.
She and Susan had no blood relation whatsoever.
And another comparison report clearly showed that Susan and Stella were biological mother and daughter.
Giselle's hand holding the report began trembling violently, beyond her control.
So that was it.
All the favoritism, harsh treatment, and coldness she had experienced over twenty-plus years now had the cruelest yet most logical explanation.
She wasn't not good enough. She simply wasn't their family.
Those twenty-plus years of trying to please them, those countless nights crying alone, were all like one long, absurd joke.
She slowly closed her eyes, and when she opened them again, those eyes that always held stubbornness and patience now held only silent, icy coldness.
City police station, office.
When Giselle pushed the door open again, Susan and Stella's eyes instantly lit up. They looked like they were seeing their savior.
"Giselle. I knew you wouldn't abandon us." Susan stood up excitedly, her face full of flattering smiles, completely different from yesterday's hysteria.
Stella also squeezed out a few tears, her voice choking. "Giselle, as long as you get us out, we'll be a good family from now on. I'll listen to everything you say."
Giselle ignored their clumsy performance. She just gently placed the DNA report on the table and pushed it in front of them.
She said nothing, but that report was the loudest slap in the face.
Susan and Stella's faces instantly turned deathly pale. All their pretenses were torn to shreds.
Giselle pulled out a chair and sat down across from them. Her posture was calm, her tone flat without a ripple. "Tell me about the clues to my birth parents."
Seeing her unmoved appearance, Susan knew the family card had completely failed. Her eyes darted around as her greedy nature took over again. "Want to know? Fine. First get us out on bail, then give us five hundred thousand dollars—no, one million dollars. Otherwise you'll never know where you were picked up from."
Giselle listened quietly. Her fingertips lightly tapped the table, making rhythmic sounds.
She seemed to be seriously considering this condition. That thoughtful look made Susan and Stella's hearts jump to their throats.
After a while, Giselle finally raised her head, the corner of her mouth curving into a faint, almost cruel smile.
"I refuse."
"You… what did you say?" Susan couldn't believe it.
Giselle didn't look at them anymore. She turned to the officer who had been silent the whole time, politely asking, "Officer, can I ask what exactly they're being detained for?"
The young officer looked at the mother and daughter, a flash of contempt in his eyes, and answered matter-of-factly. "They're suspected of producing and selling counterfeit cosmetics. Last month, a customer had a severe allergic reaction after using them—her whole face swelled up and broke out, almost disfigured."
Giselle nodded. She showed no surprise on her face. She wasn't at all surprised this mother and daughter could do such things.
She looked back at the two whose faces had turned ashen, her voice turning cold. "Selling fakes, disfiguring people—you really stop at nothing. Officer, for people like this with no bottom line who harm society, please punish them strictly according to the law. Don't go soft just because they're old or act pitiful."
She paused, looking at their terrified, desperate expressions, and slowly added, "After all, I'll be coming to visit them regularly from now on, to make sure they get the proper care they deserve inside."
These words completely broke down the mother and daughter's psychological defenses.
"Giselle. You can't do this to us." Stella screamed, no longer caring about her image. "Have you forgotten who carried you to the hospital when you were sick as a child?"
"That was my father." Giselle coldly cut her off. The only man who had ever given her warmth was long gone.
"You ungrateful thing." Susan completely lost it. She lunged at the table, pounding it with all her strength, her voice hoarse with threats. "Don't you want to know who your parents are? That jade pendant. That jade pendant is the only clue. If you dare not help us today, I'll never tell you even if I die."
