Chapter 95: Caught off-guard 1
MAVIS
I had checked Estelle into a hotel, taking her along with me wouldn't be a good idea. The driver I hired placed the piece of paper that had the address written on it by his side so he wouldn't miss his way.
He paused in front of a breathtaking building, "Here's the house sir," the driver pointed toward a house with a slightly parted gate. I looked out through the car glass, This can't be right. Isabel wouldn't splurge on such an extravagant residence. I thought silently.
Even though she had access to my finances, I had received no notifications of any monetary transactions. My wealth remained untouched, making it highly improbable that Isabel could have afforded such a magnificent estate.
Pondering over this incongruity, I attempted to justify my doubts. "Surely, this cannot be her house. Where could she have possibly procured the funds to make such a purchase?" I deliberated as I compared the lavish dwelling before me to the image captured in the photograph.
The driver seemed certain, asserting, "Sir, this is the right house. If we leave here, we'll lose our bearings."
"Very well then," I responded, reaching for the car door. "I'll go through the gate alone. Wait here for my return." With that, I stepped out of the vehicle and approached the partially ajar gate.
I got in and my eyes scanned the environment. The garage was empty, maybe the real owner had just stepped out on an emergency. Well, I pressed on, searching every corner for what could look like a human being but everywhere was as silent as a graveyard.
My footsteps halted at the door that I believed led to the living room. I rang the bell and waited, bracing myself for the unknown. My anticipation was soon interrupted by the gentle voice of a woman, announcing, "Eric, you're rather quick. Please wait, I'm coming."
The sound of the lady's voice was like Isabel's, it jolted my senses, and I found myself holding my breath, anticipating the appearance of the person behind the door.
The approaching footsteps grew louder, and the door swung open, revealing Isabel standing before me, her expression one of utter shock. For a fleeting moment, a heavy silence hung in the air as we both grappled with the unexpected encounter.
As Isabel recovered from the initial surprise, her voice laced with disbelief, she questioned, "What on earth are you doing in my house?"
The revelation left me incredulous, my mind struggling to process the her statement. Did she just say her house? Assuming that I didn't hear her well, I asked, "Is this your house? Your... your house? How?"
"Get lost! Don't let me involve the police, leave this place quietly, if you peace. You are trespassing and I will swear that I do not know you,"
"No, Isabel. You see, I and Jackson are getting along, I have forgiven you, I just want peace to rain."
Her voice rising in anger, Isabel commanded me, "Get your stinking feet out and back on the streets where you belong, Now, or, I'll call Mr Mulan and he'll know that you are a threat to me."
Undeterred, I calmly addressed her, seeking to reason, "Isabel, please, hear me out. My life has been turned upside down. Also, I lost my job, not permanently though but I got an indefinite suspension, I don't know when I'll be asked to resume. I'm just looking for peace. Can we please talk this through?"
Isabel uttered a cold, indifferent retort as she turned to enter the house, with you trailing behind. "You lost your job? We could share a toast, and clink our glasses to celebrate that News. Listen now, that's none of my business," she stated firmly, making it clear that she was done engaging with me.
"Isabel, I only felt betrayed by you. I thought you were ungrateful. I should have thought differently, I was overwhelmed, yes, a fool." I said in frustration.
Isabel's retort was swift and unyielding. "Don't be confused, I'm still an ingrate. Yes, I won't argue with you, you are not worth my time. You're only sorry because I have your things. My mother knows about us. She was here yesterday and I told her everything. She collapsed."
I heaved, "Fine, I'm ready to change okay? Here's my proposal, we go for a DNA test for the baby in your womb and if he or she is mine, we can move further from here."
"Stop dreaming, wake up Mavis. There's nothing for you here. You are nothing but a leach and if you come any closer to me, I'll have you arrested. Family ties wouldn't stand in my way, you deserve to rot in jail, and remember I'm pregnant, if something happened to me, you'll pay for it."
"You can't be alone in this , Isabel and you know that, you need a man. Maybe, it must have been a coincidence that your panties were at Jackson's, I have forgiven you. We should talk,"
She turned around and settled on a sofa, "You suddenly realized that? How about your ex? Aren't you both getting married yet? You are going to be in trouble soon if you don't leave now, I promise She said ignoring me.
Taking in the impressive interior of Isabel's home, I enquired, "You look different, Isabel. How did you become successful? Are you working?" Genuine curiosity laced my voice as I surveyed the insides of her house in awe.
"No, no Eric no!"
Isabel got up almost immediately and ran toward me, but before I could realize the reason for her reaction, it was too late.
After she exclaimed, there was a tough punch on my occiput, I knew I started bleeding profusely but I was too weak to do anything.
My vision went blurry, all I could see was Isabel walking around the living room and crying.
I saw the man, but his face was not clear enough. I lay there bleeding. Or, maybe, I passed out or even died.
