Chapter 23

The tunnels, twisting through the underground like a labyrinth designed to keep secrets buried. Every step echoed off the damp, cracked walls, making it impossible to tell if they were truly alone.

Athena led the way, her steps purposeful but cautious. Clinton followed, keeping his body slightly turned to watch Cloud, who was struggling more than he let on.

“Almost there,” Athena whispered, pausing to check around a corner before motioning them forward.

Cloud managed to keep moving, but Clinton saw the sweat on his brow, the subtle tremble in his fingers. The wound was taking its toll, and they all knew it.

Clinton exhaled sharply, forcing his voice into something softer. “Lean on me if you need to.”

Cloud shot him a sideways look, smirking despite the exhaustion. “Trying to get me to owe you one?”

Clinton rolled his eyes. “You already do.”

Before Cloud could reply, Athena held up a fist, signaling them to stop. The tunnel ahead opened into a large chamber, lit by a single flickering overhead light. A few figures stood near a makeshift barricade of crates and scrap metal. One of them, a broad-shouldered man in a tattered military jacket, looked up as they approached.

Athena stepped forward first. “We need safe passage.”

The man’s eyes raked over them, lingering on Cloud’s obvious injury. “Looks like you need more than that.”

“We can trade,” Clinton added quickly, trying to keep the tension from escalating. “Supplies, intel. Whatever you need.”

The man exchanged a glance with his companion, a wiry woman with a scar running down her cheek. Then he nodded. “We’ll see what you’ve got.”

They were led to a corner where an old wooden table had been set up. Athena unloaded the small stash of supplies they’d managed to scavenge, laying them out in neat rows.

The woman studied the items, then looked at Cloud. “That wound needs proper treatment. We have a medic who can help, but it’ll cost you.”

Cloud, who had been resting against the wall, scoffed. “Great. How much for a miracle cure?”

The woman didn’t flinch. “One job. Do it, and you get your medical supplies, plus safe passage.”

Athena crossed her arms. “What kind of job?”

The man leaned forward, lowering his voice. “SynerTech’s been moving shipments through the tunnels. We don’t know what’s in them, but whatever it is, they’re guarding it like hell. We need eyes on the inside.”

Clinton frowned. “You want us to infiltrate a SynerTech operation?”

The man nodded. “There’s a convoy scheduled to pass through a junction two miles from here in an hour. You get close, figure out what they’re moving, and get back without being seen.”

Cloud let out a dry chuckle. “So, just a casual suicide mission?”

The woman smirked. “You’ll fit right in.”

Clinton felt the weight of the decision pressing on him. They had no other options. Cloud needed proper medical care, and staying in the tunnels without securing safe passage would only get them caught.

Athena met Clinton’s gaze and gave a small nod. She was thinking the same thing.

“Fine,” Clinton said. “We’ll do it.”

They moved quickly, keeping to the shadows as they approached the designated junction. The tunnel widened into a massive, abandoned railway station, where rusted tracks curved into the darkness.

Athena crouched behind a stack of broken pallets, scanning the area. “I count four guards. Two near the tracks, two patrolling the perimeter.”

Cloud shifted uncomfortably. “What’s the plan? Because I doubt they’ll let us walk up and ask what’s in the boxes.”

Clinton thought for a moment before his gaze landed on an old maintenance ladder leading to the upper catwalks. “We go high. Get a vantage point, see what we can without engaging.”

Athena nodded. “I’ll cover you from here.”

Clinton started up the ladder first, Cloud right behind him despite his injury. Each step sent a sharp ache through Cloud’s body, but he pushed forward, gritting his teeth.

From above, they had a clear view of the convoy. Three large crates were being unloaded from a heavily armored vehicle, the SynerTech insignia gleaming under the dim light. A man in a suit oversaw the operation, speaking into a communicator.

Clinton strained to hear, catching only fragments.

“...final shipment… experimental subjects… relocation by dawn…”

Experimental subjects? Clinton’s stomach twisted. Whatever SynerTech was doing, it wasn’t just weapons or supplies—they were dealing in something far worse.

Cloud nudged him. “We need to move.”

Clinton gave a tight nod and turned to climb back down—just as Cloud’s foot slipped. The metal rung, slick with condensation, gave way beneath him.

Clinton lunged, grabbing Cloud’s arm before he could fall. Cloud clung to Clinton’s wrist, eyes wide. The noise was subtle, but enough to make one of the guards glance up.

“Shit,” Cloud muttered.

Clinton hoisted him up, and they scrambled down as quickly as they could. Athena was already up, weapon in hand. “We’ve been made.”

Shouts echoed through the chamber. The guards were moving in fast.

“No choice,” Clinton said through gritted teeth. “We fight.”

Athena fired first, her shot taking down one of the approaching guards. Clinton grabbed Cloud’s arm, steadying him as he drew his own weapon and fired at the second.

The man in the suit barked orders into his communicator. “Secure the shipment! Take them down!”

Cloud, still weak but unwilling to go down without a fight, managed to raise his pistol and shoot a third guard in the leg. The man collapsed, clutching his wound.

“We need to move!” Athena shouted.

They sprinted back toward the tunnel, dodging gunfire as they ran. The echoes of bullets ricocheting off the walls rang in their ears.

Clinton pushed Cloud forward, forcing him to keep running despite his obvious pain. They darted around a corner, diving behind cover just as another shot whizzed past them.

Then, the world trembled. A distant explosion rocked the tunnels, dust and debris cascading from the ceiling. The ground beneath them shifted slightly.

Athena cursed. “They’re sealing off the tunnels.”

Clinton gritted his teeth. “Then we find another way.”

They pressed on, weaving through the underground maze as SynerTech’s forces regrouped behind them. Their escape wasn’t guaranteed, but one thing was certain—

The fight had only just begun.
