Chapter 85 Pregnant
Chapter 85 Pregnant
Gianna
"Here you go."
Kevin slides a cup across the table before settling into the chair opposite mine.
"Thanks."
I wrap both hands around the cold cup and take a long sip. The icy matcha glides down my throat, soothing the tightness that's been sitting in my chest since I walked out of the hotel.
Fuck.
I'd forgotten how good iced matcha tasted.
Kevin watches me over the rim of his own cup, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
"I'm glad to know I still remember your favourite."
I lower the cup, letting out a quiet laugh.
"Kev, it's been barely a month."
"I know." He leans back in his chair, crossing one leg over the other. "Still... I wasn't sure if you'd switched allegiances to coffee or something."
I wrinkle my nose, ignoring the subtle jab. "Ew."
"Still very much dramatic."
"What?"
"That face." He chuckles. "You always pull it when irritated by a suggestion."
"I do not."
"Keep lying to yourself, G."
Silence settles between us, though it isn't nearly as uncomfortable as I'd expected. Seeing Kevin again is... strange and it is definitely because I feel guilty about how things ended between us.
I don't, okay maybe slightly.
It's strange because this is the first time we've spoken since everything fell apart, yet there's no tension hanging over us. No awkwardness. No resentment.
"How's Bri?" I ask, crushing the ice in my cup with my straw so I don't have to look at him.
Kevin's smile softens.
"She's okay." He lets out a quiet laugh. "She asks about you all the time."
My heart sinks.
God...
I miss that little girl more than I ever thought I would.
"Why didn't you call?" he asks gently. "Not even once, Gianna?"
I take another long sip of my matcha before setting the cup down. My fingers immediately find one another, picking at the skin around my nails.
"I didn't think it was my place anymore." I shrug, though the movement feels forced. "I wasn't sure it would've been fair."
His brows knit together.
"Fair to who?"
"To Bri." My voice comes out quieter than I intend. "You warned me not to hurt her, Kev, and I think I did exactly that." I swallow around the lump forming in my throat. "If I'd kept calling, I would've just confused her. She would've kept waiting for me to come back, and I couldn't do that to her."
Kevin watches me for a long moment before sighing.
"I think you're forgetting something."
"What?"
"We were friends first." His gaze never leaves mine. "I'm the one who suggested we fake the relationship so you could get under Dmitry’s skin, remember?"
I nod.
"And Bri..." He smiles to himself before shaking his head. "She's a smart kid, but to her, you were—"
He cuts himself off, rubbing the back of his neck.
"I miss my friend, Gianna."
Those aren’t the words I expect to hear from him.
"And my little sister misses her fellow princess."
My eyes sting almost instantly.
I blink rapidly, but it doesn't stop the tears from gathering.
The truth is...
I miss them too.
I miss Bri barging into my room at six in the morning because she wanted pancakes. I miss movie nights with the Greyhearts. I miss feeling like I belonged somewhere outside of Alec.
I miss all of it.
A shaky breath leaves me as another thought crashes into the front of my mind.
Dmitry.
How would he react if he walked in and saw me sitting here with Kevin?
No.
How would I even explain this?
Because there was no chance in hell I was telling him the relationship with Kevin had been fake.
Not after everything that had happened today.
"I miss you too, Kev... I miss Bri..." My voice catches in my throat. "I miss..."
The rest of the words refuse to come out.
Instead, a sob tears its way through my chest.
Shit.
What is wrong with me today?
Kevin is beside me before I can wipe my face. He drags a chair over, sits beside me and pulls me into a bear hug.
"Shhh..." he murmurs, rubbing slow circles over my back. "I forgive you, kiddo."
He pats the top of my head.
I smack his chest weakly.
"Stop," I mumble into his shirt.
A laugh rumbles through him before his expression turns serious. He leans back just enough to study my face.
"Okay, jokes aside..." His brows knit together. "Are you alright?"
I avoid his eyes.
"You looked out of it when you bumped into me outside. What's going on?"
I pick at the sleeve of my sweater.
"I'm not sure you'd want to hear it."
He snorts.
"Would I have asked if I didn't?" He nudges my shoulder. "And I don't care if it's about Dmitry. You obviously need to get something off your chest."
I let out a slow breath.
"One of his friends is in town... and I kind of feel out of place."
Kevin stares at me for a second.
I pout.
"See? I told you it sounded stupid."
"It doesn't." He shakes his head. "Dmitry isn't exactly the type to collect friends, so whoever this is must mean something to him. Makes sense that you'd feel left out."
"It's not just that." I sigh. "She's gorgeous. Sophisticated. Hella cool."
"He might…"
He doesn't even let me finish.
"Nah."
I blink.
"Hate to admit it," he says with a grin, "but the guy's completely whipped for you."
A reluctant smile tugs at my lips.
"You're right." I stare down at my drink, swirling the melting ice around the cup. "I think I'm still shaken up from the hospital yesterday."
His smile fades.
"What happened?"
I tell him everything.
About Alec waking up.
About the doctors putting him back into a coma.
About the possibility that if he ever opens his eyes again, he won't really be Alec anymore.
About screaming at the doctor.
About the argument with Dmitry.
Kevin listens without interrupting once. When I finally finish, he quietly wraps an arm around my shoulders and pulls me into another hug.
"You've had one hell of a day," he says softly.
I nod against him.
"You know..." He pulls back with a crooked smile. "If you hadn't told me all that, I would've sworn you were pregnant or something."
I shove him away.
"Don't even joke about that."
He raises both hands in surrender.
"I'm kidding."
I reach for my drink again, but halfway through lifting it, my hand freezes.
My period.
When was the last time I had one?
My stomach twists.
Dmitry and I have been going at it like rabbits, without protection.
What if...
