Chapter 154:: Kali found herself nodding, only half-listening to the waitress's words

The door of the Sunrise Café swung open, and Kali stepped inside, the crisp morning air still clinging to her skin. The soft light of dawn poured through the large front windows, illuminating a room full of laughter and conversation. Couples occupied nearly every table, their joy contrasting sharply with the heavy weight of solitude she carried with her.
Kali glanced at the pairs, their fingers intertwined, smiles bright as the sun outside, and felt the knot in her stomach tighten. She considered turning back, leaving this place behind, but her instinct urged her to stay.
“Excuse me, you must be Kali?” A voice broke through her thoughts, snapping her back to the moment. She looked up to find a waitress approaching, her smile infectious.
“Um, yes.”
Kali found herself nodding, only half-listening to the waitress's words. The waitress chuckled lightly, an almost conspiratorial glint in her eye. “Your boyfriend is such a gem, ma. He says when I see the most beautiful woman on the planet, I should know that’s his date. Do you know what I would pay to have my man gush over me like he does with you?”
Heat rose to Kali’s cheeks, a mix of flattery and confusion, and instinctively she searched the room for this ‘boyfriend.’ Her gaze landed on a tall man across the café, waving.
“Wait, he’s talking about me?” she thought incredulously. “Why do you say that?” Kali found herself asking.
“Because it’s true!” The waitress glanced at the man again with a brighter smile before bustling off to another table, leaving Kali in a cloud of bemusement.
With a hesitant step forward, she approached the man who had evidently claimed her as his date. As she got closer, her heart raced. Could Jayden Bakare really be interested in her? He was the epitome of handsome—tall, charming, with a smile that could light up even the darkest corners of the world. But why would a man like him need a fake girlfriend when he could surely have any woman he wanted?
“Hi, Miss Harris. I’m Jayden. Please, have a seat.” He pulled out a chair for her, his eyes bright with anticipation.
“Um, sorry, I’d rather sit here.” The nervousness bubbled within her, and she quickly shifted to the opposite chair.
“Of course,” he replied, his posture relaxed but attentive. “Was it hard getting here?”
“Yes, it was my first time.” She felt a flush of heat cross her cheeks as he smiled back warmly.
“Oh, what an honor.” His smile was disarming—perfect teeth, warm and inviting. Kali felt a flutter in her chest, warning bells going off in her mind. Handsome men were her weakness, and she had sworn to Ben to give up these arrangements, to seek a real connection before the year was through. She needed to keep her head in the game.
“Would you like to place your order now?” he asked, causing her thoughts to spiral.
“Um, yes. I’d like the medium smoothie and the creamy burger.”
He waved to the waitress, glancing at Kali again as she hurried off. She could feel his gaze, intense and unwavering, making her heart race even faster.
“I trust you,” he said, leaning back in his chair with an air of self-assurance.
“No, Kali. Handsome guys are your weakness,” she reminded herself sternly. “You have to walk away from this.” But his next words pulled her right back in.
“I hear you ended your contract with the agency, but I was supposed to contact them sooner. My apologies for the inconvenience.”
Her pulse quickened. “May I ask why you need a fake girlfriend? You could have anyone.”
“It’s flattering you think that, Miss Harris, but I haven’t been very successful in my dating life,” he confessed, eyes dark with sincerity. “My mum wants me to marry soon, but I haven’t found the right woman yet. I believe in love; she just wants to confirm I’m not… well, you know.” A ghost of a smile appeared on his lips, and Kali couldn’t help but chuckle.
“But I made a promise to someone dear to me—I cannot take this contract. I had a scary experience last time I was involved with a client.” As she turned to leave, she caught a glimpse of his eyes—genuine, sad. Her resolve wavered.
Just as she stepped outside, a text buzzed in her pocket, tearing at her heart.
Ben:
I just found out you lied to me. You’re meeting a client, Kali. Come out now before I get mad.
“I have to leave!” she nearly shouted, a mix of frustration and guilt rising within her. Once in the car, Ben’s lecture took the backseat to thoughts of Jayden and those haunting eyes. She had seen a similar sadness before, but where?
“Are you even listening?” Ben’s voice cut through her trance.
Kali shook her head but quickly grabbed her phone, tension thick in the air. She texted Jayden, letting the words spill out.
Me:
I will think about your offer and get back to you.
His response felt like a weight lifting.
Jayden:
Wow, really? Thank you so much for deciding to think about it.
A sense of relief washed over her, despite the tangled emotions in her heart. As they drove away, Ben’s hand cupped Kali’s face gently, concern etched across his features. “Kali, I’m worried about your safety here. Zola only exploits you, and I hope you know I’m rooting for you?”
“I know,” she whispered, the inner turmoil still raging inside her. “You look beautiful, by the way.”
His words sparked warmth in her chest, a reminder that there were genuine connections out there.
As her heart battled between two worlds—one filled with the allure of a handsome man and another grounded in realness and care—Kali felt a shift within her. This café, this encounter, had carved out a deep impression in her life, and as the sun continued to rise, illuminating the world outside, she knew it was time to choose wisely.
Perhaps it was time to find beauty not just in the faces but in the moments that truly mattered.

Zola sat at her usual corner table in the bustling café, tapping nervously on her phone. The morning rush surrounded her, but her mind was elsewhere. The air between her and Ben crackled with tension, a palpable storm brewing beneath their casual greetings and polite exchanges. She had always suspected Ben had ulterior motives, but today he was more confrontational than usual.
“So, what will it be, Zola?
” Ben leaned over the table, his dark eyes piercing her. “Your precious Kali is in trouble. And you, my dear, have the details I need. Are you going to share, or do we need to discuss your friendship with her?
”
Zola felt her pulse quicken. “What does her friendship have to do with you, Ben?
” She maintained her composure, but a hint of fear crept into her voice. “If Kali decided not to take that job, that should be the end of it. It’s her decision, not yours to manipulate.
”
Ben leaned back, his laughter echoing in the crowded café as he feigned indifference. “Oh Zola, I never liked you from the get-go. But Kali? She sings your praises so much I’m starting to wonder if she can even see the truth about you. All I need is a bit of information about that man she’s been meeting.
”
“And why would you think you’re entitled to that?
” Zola volleyed back, her voice steady despite the heat rising in her cheeks. “Kali isn’t a puppet for you to control.
”
Ben’s expression shifted—his chuckle faded into dark contemplation. “Control? At least she loves me enough to let me guide her. You on the other hand… you are nothing but a distraction to her potential.
”
“Potential for what? To be another one of your pawns?
” Zola retorted, her irritation boiling beneath her calm facade.
“Kali trusts me, Zola,
” Ben countered, his smile unsettling. “And you are in my way. If I see you trying to set her up with one of your clients, I will take action. I assure you.
”
“You are neither her boyfriend nor her keeper,
” Zola spat back, indignation fueling her words. “You have no right to dictate her life.
”
Ben pushed his chair back, standing over her with a threat that loomed like a shadow. “You have no idea what I’m capable of. I’ve been patient, but you’re pushing me.
”
Zola raised an eyebrow, clearly unafraid. “Do you really think that weak intimidation will work on me?
” She hesitated, considering her next move. “I’ve done my own digging on Daniel. There’s something off about him, and I can enlighten Kali if needed. You shouldn’t threaten me, not when I’m protecting her.
”
“And what could you possibly find out?
” Ben challenged. “You’ve kept your mouth shut, and it’s making me feel bold.
”
Zola took a deep breath, her resolve hardening. “You may have your manipulative tricks, but I have the truth on my side. Don’t forget, I’ve got evidence to back my claims when I need it. I’ve seen the CCTV.
”
Ben narrowed his eyes, evaluating her words like a predator sizing up its prey. “You’d better watch yourself. I can make you disappear from her life in a heartbeat.
”
“You mean cut your friendship with me?
” She shot back, not backing down. “Go ahead. You might just end up pushing her closer to me. Kali deserves to know the truth about you – the real you.
”
In that moment, Zola noticed her phone buzz with a notification. It was a message from Kali – her lifeline in this tangled web of deception. With a careful flick, she opened it, her heart racing.
“Kali just sent me a text,
” she said, holding up her phone to Ben. “She wants to know why you’ve been acting strange. Seems she might be questioning your motives after all.
”
Ben’s face paled slightly, but he quickly masked his emotion with a rehearsed smile. “That’s just a coincidence. She’ll come to her senses.
”
“Maybe,
” Zola replied, feeling a surge of hope. “But remember, the truth always comes out in the end. You can’t control everything, Ben.
”
As Ben backed away from the confrontation, the tension between them simmered but did not fade. Zola knew this battle was far from over. She would protect Kali at all costs, and if that meant facing Ben’s wrath, so be it. Sometimes, friendship was about standing against the storm, even when the winds grew fierce.
With the weight of their confrontation lingering in the air, Zola took a deep breath, prepared herself for the next round, and sent a quick reply to Kali—an assurance that they would face whatever twisted game Ben had planned together. After all, in a world filled with shadows, the light of truth was her strongest ally.
