Chapter 150:: A game with Death

Chapter 150:: A game with Death
Inside the restaurant, Todd paused, breathless. He pressed his palms against the cool surface of the metal counter, the bustling sounds of clinking dishes and chattering patrons barely making an impression as he wrestled with his thoughts. What do I do?
His mind replayed every moment he had shared with Kia—the laughter, the spontaneous adventures he had been longing for, and the late-night confessions. Each memory clashed with the reality of her relationship with Aldwin. Was it fair to pursue something that may hurt someone else?
But a part of him—bold, reckless—wanted to reach for that happiness, to see where this tangled web could lead. He leaned against the counter, stealing glances toward the entrance, half-hoping to see Kia stride through the door.
And then came the memory of Aldwin: charming, confident, and her history. Did he really stand a chance?
The door swung open, and in walked Kia, her face bright with that same playful smile. “Did you really think you could escape?”
He chuckled softly, the tension easing for a moment. “I was just…thinking.”
“About what?” she asked, her tone deceptively innocent.
“About you, me, and Aldwin,” Todd admitted, as he gestured for her to take a seat they were not inside where Aldwin was so he wanted to talk to her. It felt imperative to lay everything bare. “This isn’t just a game, Kia. I can’t be a rebound.”
Kia’s expression shifted, the playfulness replaced by something deeper. “I don’t want to play with your feelings, Todd. I know that’s dangerous.”
“Then what is this?” Todd asked, his voice steady but soft. “What do you want?”
“I want to explore this, what we have,” she said, her sincerity evident in her gaze. “But I won’t hurt Aldwin. Not again. If it comes down to him or you, I need to be certain. I need to know what I truly want.”
As Todd met her eyes—a mix of sincerity and longing—he realized that whatever path they chose would lead to pain, for someone, and possibly for both of them. The choice lay before him, and with it came the weight of their hearts.
“I’ll wait for you, Kia,” Todd said finally, his heart thrumming with the truth. “But you have to be honest with yourself first.”
Kia nodded, a flicker of something profound lighting her eyes. Perhaps it was hope, or maybe a spark of possibility.
“I forgot my purse go in, I will be right there,” kia tells him
“Okay don’t take too long, Aldwin my kill me before you return.” Kia nods as she walks away
Todd’s heart raced as he spotted Aldwin at a table in the corner. Aldwin had his arm casually draped over the back of his chair, a familiar grin plastered across his face. Beside him sat Kamari and Theo, Their kids weee there too, laughing and sharing shared jokes, blissfully unaware of the charged atmosphere that Todd carried with him.
“Hey, man,” Aldwin said, standing to greet Todd. They shook hands, and Todd felt the clamminess of his own palms, a telltale sign of his anxiety.
“Are you okay, Todd?” Aldwin’s eyes narrowed slightly, a flicker of concern creeping into his voice.
“Yeah, Kia told me she filled you in on everything,” Todd replied, trying to sound casual even as the words caught in his throat.
Aldwin's smile remained, but his gaze hardened with an intensity that made Todd shift uncomfortably in his seat. “You should know she’s confused. Don’t take anything she says too seriously, Todd,” he offered, his tone shifting from concern to something darker.
Todd couldn’t shake the feeling that Aldwin was probing, peeling back the layers of his facade. The silence stretched, heavy with unspoken words. “Aldwin, c’mon man. You know you have something to say. Just say it,” Todd urged, a knot tightening in his stomach.
“If it wasn’t you, Todd, I’d have put a bullet in the person’s head. So know this: I won’t hurt Kia, because, despite my flaws, I love my wife. But if I find out you’re thinking about… exploring anything, I won’t hold back.”
A cold shiver raced down Todd’s spine. Did Aldwin know about their earlier conversation in the car? The menacing subtext hung thick in the air like fog, and Todd could feel panic clawing at the edges of his composure.
“I don’t know what exploring you think I’m doing,” he managed, his voice barely above a whisper.
“You do know,” Aldwin replied, his tone calm yet threatening. “The car was tapped. I know everything, Todd. Yes, Kia is confused, but I know how to control the situation with my wife, and you don’t want to get hurt. There’s no way Kia is going to leave me.”
“I don’t want her to leave you,” Todd said quickly, desperation creeping into his tone.
Aldwin chuckled, the sound sending a chill through Todd. “Am I stupid? Kia is hot and very beautiful. If it were me she made a move on, I’d take it. But you—you're not me. And you know I would hurt you if you did that.”
Before Todd could respond, a soft voice broke into their tense exchange. Kia appeared, her smile illuminating the room like a warm light in the darkness. As she approached, Todd felt the weight of her gaze shift between him and Aldwin, uncertainty swirling in her eyes.
“What is going on here?” she asked, her brow furrowing as she sensed the tension. Aldwin’s smile remained, playing the part of the charming husband effortlessly.
“Just catching up with Todd. What took you so long?” Aldwin responded, smoothly diverting her attention away from the brewing storm at the table.
The waitress arrived, breaking the moment further as she took their drink orders. But Todd could still feel the heat of Aldwin’s words wrapped tightly around him, a reminder that danger lurked just beneath the surface of their friendship.
As Kia engaged in light banter with their friends, Todd couldn’t shake the feeling of unease, a shroud of uncertainty that clung to him like a shadow. He glanced at Aldwin, whose eyes still held that intense glimmer, a veiled warning that left Todd chilled to the bone.
What had he stumbled into? And more importantly, how deep would the web of deception go before it unraveled?
The night wore on, laughter occasionally erupting from their table, drowning out the unsaid truths, but Todd could not escape the gnawing reality that simmered beneath the surface, waiting for its moment to break free.
