Chapter40
Mom’s last words, “Remember to put on your most beautiful dress…” were cut off before she could finish, as she hung up the phone in a panic.
Outside the door, Roderick’s footsteps echoed around the bathroom, like a trapped animal pacing.
Andrea heard him pick up her bag she had left on the sink, the sound of the zipper opening made her tense up.
“Andie.”
His voice suddenly softened, his knuckles lightly tapping the door, “How about I take you to that French restaurant tomorrow? The one you said you liked last time.”
Andrea stared at the swirling water in the drain, suddenly feeling ridiculous.
For seven years, every time he felt guilty, he would take her to that restaurant, as if expensive foie gras could make up for all the hurt.
“I didn’t want to go.”
The man’s suppressed anger was starting to show signs of leaking out.
“Why not go? Or is it because you already have plans with another guy?”
Andrea had a hoarse voice.
“No.”

Roderick snorted, his tone as cold as ice.
“No? Then how come you agreed to go have afternoon tea with another man?”
Andrea subconsciously gripped her phone.
“You checked my phone?!”
The man’s casual voice came from outside.
“All your people are mine, what’s wrong with your phone?”
Andrea closed her eyes in deep sorrow.
She had no barriers in front of him, he could easily know all about her.
“Andie, don’t try to challenge my bottom line. Starting tomorrow, you’re not allowed to leave my sight!”
“Whatever, I’m going to bed.”
She turned off the shower, the sound so calm that even she felt
unfamiliar.
There was a moment of silence outside the door.
Roderick’s breathing came through the crack in the door, “I’ll get you your pajamas.”
After the footsteps faded away, Andrea slumped to the ground.
Slap in the face, then a sweet date, how boring.
Mom said she would help her book the plane ticket, that was her only hope of escape.

the documents, we could check the flight information at the airport.
She bit her lower lip tightly, the taste of blood spreading in her mouth.
The hardest part right now is how she’s gonna get rid of Roderick.
Maybe we could sneak away in the middle of the night, or come up with an excuse to distract Roderick when the time comes.
Once he failed, Roderick became more cautious.
So, she had to succeed in one go.
When the morning light shone through the gauze curtain into the bathroom, Andrea’s legs were already numb.
She slowly stood up, leaning against the wall, and saw through the crack in the door the cigarette butts scattered on the floor outside, at least twenty of them, some crushed, some still intact, like tiny little bodies.
The moment the door opened, the smell of tobacco mixed with bitter orange perfume hit me.
Roderick was sitting on the single sofa directly facing the bathroom door. His suit jacket was crumpled on the armrest, and his shirt collar was unbuttoned, revealing the red marks she had scratched on his collarbone last night.
“Morning.” His voice was hoarse, eyes bloodshot, clearly hadn’t slept all night.
Andrea’s throat tightened, and she instinctively wrapped her bathrobe tightly around her.
She didn’t expect him to stay up all night.

This realization made her break out in a cold sweat.
Her gaze casually swept over the white wall behind him, and she noticed a camera had been added in a certain spot.
Not just one.
