Who's the father?
“Luna Elena,” Dr. Drake beamed as I walked into his office. He was a man in his late thirties. Handsome, lean. Always with a friendly smile that depicts more of his personality than just for professional reasons.
“Doctor.” He stood and we had a handshake. “I'm sorry, I'm late. Traffic was horrible and…”
“No need for the apologies, Ma'am. It was my pleasure waiting for you.” He dismissed politely, gesturing for me to have a seat.
I did, tugging lightly at my fur coat. He reached for the drawer, took out an envelope, and looked inside again. Like double-checking.
I was sure it was my test result. I've been here days earlier and underwent a series of tests to confirm what was wrong with me.
Dr. Drake grinned widely as he handed the envelope over. That part was a consolation that there was nothing wrong with me. Nothing fatal.
“Here you go, Ma'am. Congratulations.”
My hand quivered a bit as I took it. Congratulations? What was he congratulating me for?
Slowly, I opened the envelope. A loud slam to my heart left me struggling for air as I went through it.
“You're a month pregnant.” Dr. Drake's voice echoed in my head. “How did you not notice until now?”
How didn't I notice? That's because it wasn't a possible reality!! People don't just get pregnant out of the blue. They've got to be sex involved and I haven't had that in a long time.
Trent and I might live in the same house and breathe the same air, but we share different rooms. And he doesn't as much as hug me. So how the heck did I get pregnant?
A MONTH…the pregnancy is a month old?
I sucked in breath at a fast rate, trying to save my heart from caving in. The world around me twirled at a mad pace. My eyes watered with tears. My fingers trembled.
It couldn't be…it shouldn't be. Anything but this. Anything, but this, dear goddess!!!
“Luna Elena, are you…alright?” Dr. Drake scrutinized my stupefied state. “Are you…is this an anxiety attack?” he rushed to his feet, getting around the table to me.
“No…” I quickly shook my head, stopping him from creating any bit of fuss about this. “I'm…I'm okay…”
A tear dropped. His eyes widened further.
“You're crying,” he pointed out. “Are you alright? Should I call Alpha Trent…”
“No!” I didn't realize it was a shriek until it left my lips. “Don't, please. I'm okay.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes. Yes, I'm fine.” I sniffed back my stubborn tears. “Doctor, uh, this test, can you not tell him about it?”
“Huh? Why not?” His brows furrowed. Clearly showing that I just made an unreasonable request.
I'm a Luna. “Happily” mated to the man of my dreams. We're finally having a child. Why would I wanna keep it a secret from him? Why wasn't I thrilled? Why was I crying?
These thoughts were probably processed in his head in just seconds. And I wished I could explain it to him but I couldn't. I shouldn't make ridiculous requests either.
I should keep this situation as private and discreet as I can.
“Thank you, doctor.” I slowly got on my feet. He was holding my arms, because of how unstable I seemed. I gave him an assuring smile and he slowly let go.
I practically dragged my feet out of his office and down to my car. The chauffeur headed home and I cried all the way.
At home, I was in my room, locked inside, staring horribly at the test result.
What do I do? If Trent finds out, he's gonna ask me. What do I tell him? How do I explain to him? What if Father heads about this? What if it gets out, that I was pregnant for the father of my mate?
A voice whispered to me to call him. Vince.
I shook my head. This was the worst time to call him. If anything, I didn't want him to find out. His twisted mind could use this as leverage to completely ruin whatever is left of my reputation and marital life.
A gasp forced its way out of my lips as Trent's car swerved in. This was a nightmare. Dear goddess, please wake me up from it.
“... probably a bigger structure? I don't know. But I wanna provide more medical facilities for the Pack. And I need y'all to back me up in this project.”
The Spanish businessmen exchanged looks and nodded. “Sure, Vince. Anything for you.”
I grinned, shaking that hand. “Thank you.”
Another deal was signed. Another project is on the way. My financial life was a blast. I can't say the same for my emotional and psychological life.
“This is Dr. Drake.” I introduced, as we stepped into his office.
“Alpha Vince.” He stood and came around to shake the gentlemen. Then he smiled at me.
“I need you to show these men around. Or maybe one of his nurses should. I wanna talk to you.”
“Sure. Uh…I'll hand them over to a nurse and come right back.” He bowed and escorted them outside while I settled on an empty seat.
He returned and hurried over to his chair, looking all ready to attend to me.
I adjusted, keeping my voice as low as I could. “I need pills. Sleeping pills.”
“Do you have insomnia?”
“I guess so. I can't sleep…” the words halt as I realize I was overstepping my bounds.
I was gonna say, “I can't sleep because I'm always thinking about her. Can't get her out of my head, can't close my eyes without envisioning her. And now I'm a wreck because I haven't really slept since my birthday party.”
“...just give me something to put me to sleep once my head hit the pillows.” It'd be good to really sleep and not stay up all night, wondering if she's in Trent's arms. What they're doing. If she's forgotten about me. If she really doesn't wanna have anything to do with me. Like she claims. Stalking her social media accounts. Imagining so many erotic moments with her.
Like I need to shut my mind up for once and fucking sleep!
“Alright. I'll give you something. But, take it easy. Don't get all stressed out…”
I nodded placably, at his words and watched him scribbling something on a paper. My nodding halted at the next words.
“... you're gonna be a grandfather soon. You need to stay healthy for that.”
I didn't need a whole day to make sense of his words. It hit right where it should hit the second they left his lips.
“Elena's…pregnant?”
“Yes.” He nodded with a grin.
“How far along?” I asked, with a pent-up breath.
“A month. She had no idea actually. I think she wasn't…”
I was already at the door, then I paused and turned. “Does my son know?”
“No…I haven't —” he got cut off by a nurse who just walked in.
“Greetings, Alpha Vince.” She greeted me with a smile. “It's nice to run into both you and your son here.”
My brows shot up. “Trent was here?”
“Yeah, a few minutes ago. He left in a hurry after I told him that Luna Elena was expecting a child.”
Fuck!!!
I rushed out of the office, raced for my car, and drove out of the hospital. Ignoring traffic signs could wound my reputation but right now, it was the least of my worries.
Trent's building came in sight faster than it should. I alighted out of the car and into the house. A few servants were downstairs, whispering nervously between themselves.
Then Trent's yell from upstairs came and I realized just what the fuck was going on.
I took the stairs and pushed their bedroom door open.
Elena was nervously seated on the bed in tears, while Trent was standing right in front of her, looking red with rage.
“I'll ask again, and to the goddess, if you continue keeping silent, I'm gonna do something crazy.” He fumed.
Elena's eyes shot up and her head swung in my direction. Trent had yet to notice my presence, but she just did. Then he asked again.
“Who the hell is the father of your child?”
She was staring at me. My heart did a thousand flips as those doe eyes of hers melted in tears.
Oh, shit.
