Twenty three

I couldn't believe it. The council had discovered the guard's secret and conducted their own investigation. I was taken aback, but also relieved that the guard had followed my orders and kept Tyler in the dark. It was satisfying to see Tyler confused and out of his element for once.

The council's eldest member addressed us with a stern and serious voice. He claimed that Ruby's lineage should have no association with werewolves. He went on to say that further tolerance of a witch posing as a woman would have disastrous consequences. Anger surged through me at his words.

How dare they speak of Ruby in such a manner? She was the most innocent and gentle person I had ever encountered. I could no longer remain silent and abruptly addressed the elder, my tone impolite. "Ruby is not a threat. She is an incredible individual, and I won't allow you to disrespect her like that."

The council members were taken aback by my outburst, and they ordered me to stay away from Ruby. I couldn't accept their command. I stormed out of the meeting, fully aware that severe consequences would follow.

As I left, a sense of fear for Ruby washed over me. The council possessed considerable power and could make our lives exceedingly difficult. I had to find a way to protect Ruby, even if it meant defying the council's orders.

I drove straight to Ruby's place, needing to see her and ensure her safety. As I knocked on her door, nervousness gripped me. What if she didn't want to see me after what had transpired at the council meeting?

The door swung open, revealing Ruby's smiling face. "Hey, Lucian. What brings you here?" she asked.

"I wanted to make sure you're alright," I said, my gaze searching her face for any signs of distress.

She smiled at me, and a wave of relief washed over me. "I'm fine. Why wouldn't I be?" she replied.

I hesitated for a moment before deciding to disclose the details of the council meeting. "The council held a meeting about you. They're displeased with the fact that your lineage is not meant to be associated with werewolves," I explained.

Ruby's expression turned serious, and I could sense the worry in her eyes. "What does that mean for me?" she inquired.

"I don't know, but I won't allow anything to harm you. I promise," I said, gently taking her hand in mine.

Ruby smiled at me, and a comforting warmth enveloped me. "Thank you, Lucian. I appreciate it," she expressed.

As I gazed into her eyes, I felt an even stronger connection to her. I yearned to protect her, to be by her side, and to ensure her safety. Regardless of the council's stance, I knew I had to find a way to make that happen.

Lucian stormed out of the meeting, seething with anger. He couldn't believe the council's audacity to speak ill of Ruby in such a manner. He understood that her lineage was different, but that didn't diminish her worth as a person. He resolved to protect her at any cost, even if it meant opposing the council's wishes.

As he left the building, a message from Ruby appeared on his phone. She asked about his well-being and suggested they meet to talk. A smile crept across his face, and a warm feeling spread through his chest. He promptly responded, assuring her that he was fine and proposing a meeting.

They agreed to meet at a coffee shop near their workplace. When Lucian entered, his eyes were immediately drawn to Ruby sitting in a corner, delicately sipping her coffee. Their gazes met, and her face lit up with

a smile. Lucian's heart skipped a beat.

They spent the next few hours engrossed in conversation, sharing laughter and building a deeper connection. It felt as if they had known each other for a lifetime. Lucian found himself increasingly drawn to Ruby—the way she spoke, the way she smiled—everything about her seemed perfect. He knew he had to express his feelings, but he didn't want to overwhelm her.

As their time together came to a close, Lucian summoned the courage to convey his emotions. "Ruby, although we've only known each other for a short while, I feel an indescribable connection with you. It's as if we've been intertwined for eternity. I understand the complexity of our circumstances, but I can't control the way I feel about you. I want to be by your side, protect you, and love you. Will you give me a chance?"

Ruby gazed at him, her eyes brimming with emotions. "Lucian, I'm at a loss for words. I do have feelings for you, but our situation is far from simple. I need time to sort through my thoughts and emotions."

Lucian nodded, comprehending her perspective. He didn't want to pressure her into anything she wasn't ready for. "I understand, Ruby. Take all the time you need. I'll be here for you, no matter what."

As they bid each other farewell, Lucian couldn't help but feel a flicker of hope. He knew the circumstances were complicated, but he was willing to fight for Ruby. He would go to great lengths to be with her, even if it meant opposing the council's dictates.

However, as he walked home, an ominous premonition lingered within him. He understood that the council would not take his actions lightly, and he had to brace himself for the potential repercussions. The question was, was he prepared to face the consequences?
