Twenty one

I couldn't believe my luck. Spending the day with Ruby had been a complete accident, but it turned out to be the best thing that had happened to me in a while. The more time I spent with her, the stronger my attraction grew. I found myself drawn to her, wanting her for myself, and I knew I had to take action.

Walking home, thoughts of Ruby consumed my mind. I couldn't shake her from my thoughts. I wanted to be with her, protect her, and make her mine.

However, just as I was lost in my thoughts, I received a broadcast message from the council, alerting me about an emergency meeting concerning Ruby. My heart sank, and a wave of worry washed over me. What had they discovered? And why hadn't the guard informed me about it?

Without hesitation, I called the guard, demanding answers. "What's going on?" I asked urgently.

"I don't know yet," he replied. "I haven't found anything concrete, but I'll continue investigating. Give me some time."

Feeling frustrated and powerless, I ended the call. I didn't know what to do. The council's actions hinted at something significant, and I didn't want Ruby to be caught in the middle.

The following day, determined to find answers, I woke up early and headed to the council's headquarters. I needed to confront them and understand the situation, no matter the cost.

As I entered the building, my heart pounded with anticipation. What if they had uncovered my connection to Ruby? What if they knew about our time together?

Pushing those thoughts aside, I focused on the present. The council members sat around a large table, engrossed in discussion. Silence fell upon their notice of my arrival.

"Lucian, we've been expecting you," one of them spoke.

"What's happening?" I questioned, my voice trembling slightly.

"We have received information about Ruby," another council member stated. "It appears that her powers surpass our initial estimations."

A knot formed in my stomach. More powerful than anticipated? What did that imply?

"We must take appropriate action," the first council member continued. "We cannot allow someone with such immense power to roam freely. It poses a risk to our community."

Anger surged within me. They spoke of Ruby as if she were a monstrous threat. Yet, before I could voice my objections, the meeting abruptly adjourned, and the council members departed.

I stood there alone, bewildered and confused. What did they mean by taking action? And what would it mean for Ruby?

Exiting the building, my mind raced with thoughts and concerns. I had to uncover the truth. I had to protect Ruby, regardless of the circumstances. However, as I stepped into the bright sunlight, an ominous feeling settled in—the sense that things were about to take a turn for the worse.

As I made my way home, a sinking feeling filled my chest. Waiting until the following day to learn about the council's plans for Ruby seemed unbearable. I needed answers immediately.

I retrieved my phone and dialed the guard's number. He picked up after the second ring.

"Guard, have you discovered anything?" I inquired urgently.

"No, sir. I haven't found any concrete information yet. However, I assure you, I will continue my investigation. Please give me some time," he replied.

Impatience gnawed at me. "I don't have the luxury of waiting until tomorrow. This is urgent. I need to know now."

Understanding my urgency, the guard responded, "I comprehend your concern, sir. But it's late, and I have exhausted all my leads for today. I promise to resume the search first thing in the morning."

I let out a frustrated sigh.

"Fine. Keep me updated. And remember, Ruby is under my protection. I won't allow any harm to come to her."

"I understand, sir. I will do my utmost best," he assured before ending the call.

Restlessness consumed me as I paced back and forth in my apartment. I couldn't simply remain idle. I had to take action.

I grabbed my coat and swiftly exited my apartment. Despite knowing I shouldn't, I couldn't resist the urge to check on Ruby. I needed to ensure her safety.

As I approached her apartment, conflicting thoughts filled my mind. I didn't want to startle or discomfort her, but I had to confirm she was unharmed.

Reaching her door, I overheard muffled voices from within. My heart raced. Who could be with her? And for what purpose?

Pressing my ear against the door, I strained to catch their conversation, but it remained indiscernible.

Suddenly, the door swung open, and Ruby stood before me, surprise evident on her face. However, I had little time to dwell on that now.

"Lucian," she uttered, her voice wavering. "What are you doing here?"
