Chapter 18 018

Chapter 18 018

Leo didn’t leave. The calm after his father’s visit wasn’t calm at all; it was the heavy, charged stillness before a lightning strike. He moved through my apartment with a restless energy, putting away the abandoned breakfast, cleaning the few dishes with a focus that felt military.

I watched him, my own nerves strung tight. “What does he mean, ‘measures’?”

Leo didn’t turn from the sink. “He could cut off my access to family resources. He could publicly support a rival within the pack to challenge my position as heir. He could…” He paused, the dishcloth going still in his hand. “He could approach you directly, with incentives or threats designed to make you leave.”

“He can’t make me leave.”

Now he turned, his expression grim. “You don’t know him. He is a master of pressure. Financial, social, psychological. He will find your weakest point and apply leverage.” He came back to the island, bracing his hands on the counter. “We cannot stay here. Not for the week. This apartment is too exposed. He knows where you live.”

A cold knot formed in my stomach. “Where would we go?”

“My penthouse. It has private, secure access. My own security team. He would not dare a direct confrontation there.” He looked at me, his eyes pleading. “I know it is an imposition. I know it is moving too fast. But it is the safest place for you.”

The idea was overwhelming. Moving in with him? Even temporarily? It felt like surrendering my last piece of independent ground. But the memory of Alistair Blackwood’s icy eyes in my hallway made my skin crawl. This wasn’t about romance; it was about a siege.

“Okay,” I said, the word tasting strange. “For the week.”

The relief on his face was profound. “Pack a bag. Just essentials. We’ll go now.”

Twenty minutes later, I stood in the penthouse living room with my duffel bag at my feet, feeling like a refugee. Leo had been on his phone the entire ride up, issuing low, terse commands about security protocols.

He finished the call and came to stand before me, the intensity of the morning finally softening into concern. “This is not how I wanted you to see this place. As a bunker.”

“It’s not a bunker. It’s beautiful.” And it was. In the daylight, the view was staggering, the warm, earthy decor even more inviting. But now I saw it through a new lens—the single, secure elevator, the thick walls, the silent alert system by the door. It was a fortress disguised as a home.

“Come,” he said, taking my bag. “I’ll show you the guest room.”

He led me down a hall to a room that was anything but ‘guest.’ It was a serene suite with its own bathroom and another stunning view. It was bigger than my entire apartment.

“This is too much,” I murmured.

“It is exactly enough,” he replied, setting my bag on a low bench. He stood awkwardly in the doorway, the commanding Alpha replaced by a man unsure of his welcome. “The kitchen is fully stocked. The entire floor is yours to roam. I have… work I must attend to. Damage control.”

“Of course.”

He hesitated. “You are not a prisoner here. If you need to leave, you tell me. I will arrange secure transport. But please, do not go anywhere alone.”

The warning was gentle, but absolute. I nodded.

He left, closing the door softly behind him.

I sat on the edge of the enormous bed, the silence of the luxurious room pressing in on me. I was in Leo Thorne’s penthouse, hiding from his werewolf-pack-leader father, because I was his… mate. The absurdity of it all hit me in a wave, and a slightly hysterical laugh escaped my lips.

My phone buzzed. Amanda.

AMANDA: OKAY, I’M DYING. WHAT HAPPENED WITH THE BREAKFAST DUKE? DID HE FEED YOU GRAPES?

I typed back, my fingers flying.

ME: His father showed up. At my apartment. I’m now living in the penthouse. Possibly for a week. It’s a whole thing.

The three dots bounced for a full minute.

AMANDA: I’m sorry, I think my phone is having a stroke. Did you say you’re LIVING with him? And his DAD did a surprise inspection? Chloe, this is escalating at warp speed.

ME: Tell me about it. It feels like I’ve been conscripted into a secret war.

AMANDA: Are you safe? Do you need me to come over? I can be a terrifying distraction in sequins.

I smiled for the first time in hours.

ME: I’m safe. Just… rattled. And confused. He’s in damage control mode. I’m in the guest room staring at a view that costs more than my life.

AMANDA: The GUEST room? After a kiss like you described? The man has inhuman self-control. Or he’s a gentleman. Possibly both. Alright, check in often. And for god’s sake, find the wine cellar.

I put my phone down and explored the room, then tentatively ventured out into the penthouse. It was quiet. I found Leo in a room I hadn’t seen before—a study. Floor-to-ceiling books, a massive desk, two large computer monitors glowing. He was on the phone again, his back to the door, his voice a low, forceful murmur.

“…she is under my protection, Marcus. Any approach, any contact from anyone in the family, is to be considered a direct challenge. Yes. I am aware of the consequences.”

He sounded like a different person. A ruler. It was a side of him I’d glimpsed, but never so fully. This was Leo Thorne, Alpha heir, securing his territory. And I was the territory.

He finished the call and spun in his chair, sensing me immediately. The ruler’s mask slipped, replaced by weariness. “I did not hear you.”

“You were busy.” I hovered in the doorway. “Is it bad?”

“It is… complicated.” He ran a hand through his hair. “My father is moving assets. Calling in favors. He is laying the groundwork to isolate me.” He looked at me, his eyes shadowed. “He has requested a formal pack gathering at the estate. In six days. He expects me to attend. And to bring you.”

The floor seemed to tilt. “A gathering? Like a party?”

“Like a tribunal disguised as a party.” He stood and came to me, stopping a foot away. “It will be your true test. Every elder, every rival, every potential ally will be there. They will all be watching you, waiting for you to falter. My father will present Selene—the woman he chose for me. He will force a comparison in front of everyone.”

The picture he painted was medieval and terrifying. “Do I have to go?”

“If you do not, you concede defeat. You confirm their belief that you are not strong enough to stand in our world.” He cupped my face, his touch grounding. “But if you go, and you hold your head high, if you show them the strength I see in you every day, you shatter their expectations. You change the game.”

Six days. To prepare to face a room full of people who saw me as a weakness, a human anomaly. To be compared to a woman raised for this very role.

The fear was a cold stone in my gut. But beneath it, a spark of defiance ignited. Alistair Blackwood had looked at me and seen a quaint distraction. Leo saw a queen.

I placed my hand over his on my cheek. “Then teach me,” I said. “Not just about hierarchies and bonds. Teach me how to survive a pack gathering.”

A slow, proud smile spread across his face, the weariness lifting. “The first lesson,” he said, his thumb stroking my jaw, “is that you do not survive it. You conquer it.” He leaned in, his lips brushing my forehead in a kiss that was both a promise and a benediction. “Starting now. We have six days to turn a botanical illustrator into a queen.”
