Chapter 220 THEY WANT HER AWAY
Chapter 220 THEY WANT HER AWAY
MIA
The first thing I felt was the heaviness in my body, like I was trapped somewhere between sleep and reality. Slowly, I forced my eyes open, and a bright light hit me immediately, making me blink several times before my vision finally adjusted.
White ceiling. White walls. A faint beeping sound filled the silence.
Then I felt it the small tube resting beneath my nose, the oxygen machine.
For a moment, I just stared at it in confusion, until the memories came crashing back all at once. Mira, the gun in her hand, the look in her eyes, the pain, the blood.
My hand moved weakly toward my stomach, and the moment my fingers touched the area where I had been shot, a sharp pain tore through me.
A small gasp escaped my lips as I realized I was alive, but it still hurt. The first thought that entered my mind wasn’t the pain it was them. Elara. Emmanuelle. My heart immediately began to race as questions flooded in: were they safe, what happened after I lost consciousness, and Mira… what happened to her?
I tried to sit up, but my body immediately protested. A wave of weakness dragged me back against the pillow, and I clenched my jaw in frustration. I hated feeling helpless. I wanted to call someone, ask questions, know what had happened, but my voice barely came out and the room stayed empty no doctor, no nurse, no Adrian, nobody.
I closed my eyes, trying to steady my breathing, when voices drifted through the door.
At first, it was just noise low, broken pieces of argument I couldn’t fully catch. Then the words sharpened, cutting through the silence of the room.
I stayed still, listening carefully as voices drifted through the door.
“It’s better we send Elara out of Naples.”
My eyes opened at once. Uncle. The chill that ran through me was instant, like something had dropped heavily in my chest.
Send Elara away? Why would they even
“Never.” Adrian’s voice snapped back immediately, firm and sharp enough to silence the space for a moment.
“My sister stays with me.”
My fingers tightened around the blanket without me even realizing it.
“Your sister stays with you?” Costa’s voice rose through the hallway, rough with anger. “What about my niece? What about Mia?”
My breath caught at the sound of my name.
“She always puts herself in danger for Elara!” he shouted.
Something tightened inside my chest at that not just pain, but something heavier, like I was being spoken about in a way I couldn’t even interrupt to defend myself.
“I won’t allow this to happen again,” my uncle said, his voice shaking now, not with weakness but with pressure he could barely control. “It has been two weeks. Two weeks Mia has been lying here unconscious, and you expect me to just stand by and let your sister and Mia remain close like nothing happened?”
Silence pressed against the walls for a moment before his voice dropped lower but remained firm as he said, “No. It will never happen.”
“I will do everything in my power to separate them,” he continued, slower now, each word heavier than the last. “If I have to destroy that friendship… I will.”
My chest tightened, not because I didn’t understand him, but because I did. He wasn’t just angry. He was scared.
“She is the only family I have left,” he said quietly, and the words landed differently this time softer, almost broken in a way I had never heard from him before.
For a moment, no one spoke. Even the hallway felt like it had gone still, like it was holding its breath with them.
Then Adrian spoke again.
“Calm down, Costa.”
A pause.
“Mia and Elara have their own choices to make.”
A short, bitter laugh cut through the air.
“Choices?”
The word snapped like something breaking.
“You call that a choice?” Costa barked. “The choice that almost killed my niece?”
My pulse picked up at that. My fingers dug deeper into the blanket without me noticing, and suddenly the air outside felt thicker, tighter like the argument wasn’t just words anymore, but something that could spill over at any second.
Then my uncle spoke again, and everything changed.
“Do you know Alessandro wants your sister back?” he said.
My body went completely still. Even my breathing stopped for a moment.
Alessandro. Elara. Just hearing those names together twisted something painfully inside me.
“He won’t dare,” Adrian said immediately, his voice firm enough to cut through the tension.
A beat passed, then Costa replied, “He already did.”
My stomach dropped as the words hit me. My eyes stayed fixed on nothing, unable to move, like my body had forgotten how to react.
“He met her,” he added. “My assistant saw them together.”
For a moment, I couldn’t think or breathe properly, like the air had been pulled out of the room.
Elara wouldn’t she couldn’t. Not after everything. Not after what he did to her.
But even as I told myself that, doubt slipped in quietly unwanted, heavy, settling in my chest like something I couldn’t shake. Something was missing. Something didn’t add up.
My hands moved before my mind fully caught up, pushing against the mattress as I tried to sit up. Pain tore through my stomach instantly, sharp enough to steal the breath from my lungs. I froze for a second, jaw tightening as I fought it off, but I didn’t lie back down. I couldn’t.
Not when they were talking about her like this. Not when her name was being dragged through a conversation I couldn’t see but could feel tearing everything open inside me.
My breathing steadied, slow but forced as I tried to control the pain and the panic at the same time.
I needed answers. I needed to move. Because I couldn’t just lie here while everything outside that door was falling apart.
And one thing was certain… I would not let Alessandro take Elara away again. Not after everything.
