Chapter 180 A Almost Forgotten
Chapter 180 A Almost Forgotten
ALMA
“Alma, you still need to rest. It hasn’t even been twenty-four hours since you got out of labor,” Diana said, clearly frustrated.
I ignored her and continued gently wiping Sebastian’s body. It had been six months since he fell unconscious, since the wedding. The house felt like a prison without him. I had spent every single day of those six months right here with him.
Because of this, my father had moved in with Elijah and Diana. Lady Flores had added another bed in this room so I could sleep here. None of them could convince me to go back home.
I had only stepped foot in our house once—six months ago—when I went to drop off my wedding gown and Sebastian’s suit. That day, I had cried my eyes out over how our perfect day had ended.
Life without Sebastian had been emotionally draining. I never lacked financially—Uncle William never said a word about my shares, and I always received my end-of-month payments—but what was the point without the person you wanted to spend every moment with?
“I’ll go check on the baby and ask Lady Flores if she needs anything,” Diana said.
I nodded, carefully changing Sebastian’s t-shirt.
A few minutes later, I was done cleaning him up. I held his hand, staring at his peaceful face. My chest tightened painfully. I just wanted to hear his voice again. I wanted to tell him how much I had missed him.
Suddenly, the door clicked open. Mrs. Mendoza and Bianca stepped in, Bianca carrying her baby girl in her arms. She had given birth two weeks ago; after the incident, she and Mrs. Mandoza had decided to stay nearby. Mrs. Mendoza had been running the hospital, and with Elijah's help, I had been managing the maternity home. Elijah said Mrs. Mendoza didn’t know about it and wouldn’t be willing to run a charity, so I had kept it from them.
“Why are you here, Alma? Aren’t you supposed to be resting?” Mrs. Mendoza asked, her voice carrying a strange note of sympathy.
I ignored her completely, my grip tight on Sebastian’s hand as I brought it closer to my face and rested my cheek against it.
“Alma, aren’t you supposed to be spending time with your child? That’s why we came earlier,” Bianca said carefully.
I swallowed hard and shut my eyes. I still remembered waking up six months ago after fainting due to the news about Sebastian. They had had a massive argument about who would take care of Sebastian. Bianca had insisted I should do it since I caused the situation. She had also accused me of exchanging glances with Nick, claiming I would abandon Sebastian and start a new life with him. She had called me a whore, which earned her a slap from Lady Flores. Since then, Lady Flores had moved out from their house and rented her own place. I heard Mrs. Mendoza had visited to plead on Bianca's behalf, but Lady Flores said the apology should come to me. None of them had apologized. Honestly, I didn’t want it. Even without them, I could take care of Sebastian myself. They usually came in the afternoon or evening just to make sure he wasn't alone.
“Alma, I know you might still be sad about what happened between us, but I’m a mother. I know how much rest you need after childbirth. Can you at least listen to us and rest?” Bianca said carefully.
I said nothing, my face still pressed against Sebastian’s hand.
Suddenly, the door clicked open again. Lady Flores walked in carrying the baby. Her brow twisted in disbelief as her eyes swept between Mrs. Mendoza and Bianca before landing on me.
“Is this my grandson?” Mrs. Mendoza asked excitedly, taking a step forward. Lady Flores instantly gave her a cold stare, and Mrs. Mendoza's steps faltered.
Lady Flores walked over and handed the baby to me. “He needs to be fed,” she said.
I nodded and carefully pulled out my breast to nurse the little one. I wonder how Sebastian would feel seeing him.
I brought his hand over to touch the baby.
“He would be so happy,” Lady Flores whispered, holding my shoulders.
I swallowed hard, fighting back more tears.
“Lady Flores, you haven’t touched your granddaughter,” Bianca cut in, trying to step forward. Her mother quickly held her back.
“Naomi, I know we didn’t do the right thing as a mother-in-law and sister-in-law,” Mrs. Mendoza started. “But can you reconsider? This baby girl didn’t hurt you. Let her not pay for the sins of her parents, please.”
Lady Flores ignored them completely.
Suddenly, the door opened again. Diana, my father, and Elijah stepped in.
“Dad,” I blurted out.
He walked straight to me, took my hand, and pressed a kiss to it. “You have done well, my dear. It’s going to be fine,” he said, kissing my forehead.
According to Diana, my father had been with me right after I gave birth yesterday before leaving to change. I had been asleep and didn’t even know. The moment I woke up, I fed the baby, and Lady Flores offered to clean him, and I used the chance to come clean Sebastian up.
“There’s good news, Alma,” Elijah said. “The doctor just told me Sebastian opened his eyes last night. The doctor couldn’t give a full report because no one was with him at the time. He just informed Sebastian that his wife had just given birth, then injected him with sleeping pills because he almost got up to come meet you, which wasn't safe at that time.”
Everyone gasped in shock.
“Wha… what did you just say?” I asked, my voice trembling.
“Are you serious, Elijah? My son is awake?” Mrs. Mendoza asked quickly.
Elijah gave a small nod.
Before anyone could react, a soft voice cut through the room.
“Alma…”
My heart dropped.
Sebastian’s eyes were open, looking straight at me.
