Chapter 167 Just Fate

Chapter 167 Just Fate
ALMA

For the past two days, I hadn’t laid eyes on Sebastian. He was occupied with both the divorce proceedings and a patient who had lost one of the twins she had given birth to. She wanted to end her life.

It took everything from the nurses, midwives, Sebastian, and me to calm her down and convince her to stay strong for the child who had survived.

Later, we found out the woman had a mental illness caused by years of abuse from her husband. He had been abusing her since they were dating, long before they got married.

This afternoon, I spoke with Sebastian and asked about the woman and her child. I found out she wanted to kill herself because the surviving twin was a boy while the one who died was a girl. She believed life always favored men over women. Even among her children, she couldn't understand why her daughter had died instead of her son.

I know it’s hard for someone who has been abused by her husband, but she could still live for her son and raise him to see women differently. Not all boys grow up to become villains.

“Hey, dear, you haven’t said a word. What’s on your mind?” My dad’s voice cut through my thoughts.

I blinked and turned to face him.

It was already 7 p.m. We had just finished dinner, and I decided to wheel him back to his room.

“Dad, do you want me to sleep beside you tonight, like the old days?” I asked softly.

Last night, I slept alone. Sebastian had only dropped me off and left without even coming inside. Since he hadn’t been here since yesterday, I doubted he would come home tonight.

“What’s wrong? Did Sebastian do something to you?” he asked sharply.

I forced a small laugh.
“Dad, Sebastian isn’t that bad. He’s just dealing with some issues at the hospital.”

He let out a relieved sigh and adjusted himself on the bed, making room for me beside him.

I grinned and immediately climbed onto the bed, curling up in his embrace.
He gently patted my back.
“You’ve really changed, Nina,” he said.
I chuckled.

“Dad, can you stop saying that? It’s embarrassing,” I muttered.

He was referring to how I had gone from being a naive virgin to a woman who got pregnant by another man while still married.

“What? You’ve become wiser. You don’t ask unnecessary questions anymore. You think before you speak, and you no longer get yourself into trouble. I’m impressed with this version of you.”

He paused, shifting as he stared up at the ceiling.

“When I woke up and found out you were married and pregnant, I worried about how you would manage a home and raise a child at your age when I had always done everything for you. But after spending time with you recently, I can see you’ve truly grown into a woman. I don’t have to worry anymore.”

My heart tightened.
I smiled and snuggled closer to him.
It had been so long since we slept like this. Ever since I woke up in the hospital after the accident, I had become unusually clingy with him. I didn’t know whether I had been like that before the accident, but somehow, I found an indescribable comfort in his presence.

“Just get some sleep, okay?” he said.
I nodded, already feeling my eyelids grow heavy.

SEBASTIAN

“What did you just say?” I asked Elijah over the phone as my entire body froze.

How could Luis be that stupid and reckless?

“That’s what happened, sir,” Elijah replied.
“The lawyer and Lady Flores went to visit Luis. The lawyer explained that, because there were witnesses prepared to testify against him, the case might not be in his favor.”

“Okay. Go on,” I urged, keeping my eyes on the road.

“He asked the lawyer to do whatever he could to get him out so he could deal with his enemies. The lawyer became furious and yelled at Luis, telling him to come to his senses. He was still planning another crime while sitting in prison for the last one. Luis got angry and called the lawyer his father’s obedient dog. Then he threatened that if the lawyer didn’t do something, he would kill the lawyer’s younger brother.”

Elijah paused before continuing.

“The lawyer then explained to Lady Flores that he was shocked to hear those words from someone he had spent years breaking the law to protect, simply because he wanted to repay Luis’s father for saving his brother. He then asked Lady Flores if he could resign so he wouldn’t violate the agreement stating that, as long as he remained the family lawyer, he had to protect his wife and son.”

That must have been quite a scene.
But Elijah still hadn’t told me what he mentioned at the beginning.

“So what happened next?” I asked.

“The lawyer resigned, leaving Luis behind in prison. Lady Flores then announced that she had disowned him. Luis completely lost control and threatened to kill everyone, including Lady Flores.”

Elijah paused again and took a deep breath.

“I found out the rest from another inmate who witnessed everything. During dinner, Luis attempted to escape. The officer who caught him warned that he would shoot if Luis took another step, but Luis ignored him. The officer shot him in his second leg. Luis fell, hit his head on a rock nearby, and lost consciousness.”

“He was rushed to the hospital, where they said he had lost a lot of blood and asked for his family. No one came. That was how he lost his life.” Elijah dropped.

I let out a long breath.
I never expected him to die like that.

Speaking of no one coming, what about Victoria?

“What about Victoria?” I asked. “If no one else came, surely she did.”

“I heard she visited him before all this happened, and he said some terrible things when she offered to help him get out.”

“Terrible things? Like what?” I asked as I drove into the compound and stopped in the driveway, remaining seated as I listened.

“He mocked her, asking how she intended to help him. Then he asked if she planned to sleep with someone to get him released.”

"Okay?" I asked.

“He also told her that no officer would find her attractive because, if she had been attractive, she wouldn’t have lost to Alma. Then he mocked her again by saying Alma was pregnant.”

I sighed. In the end, he destroyed everyone who genuinely cared about him with nothing but his own words.

Since he had chosen his own fate, there was no point disturbing those doctors anymore to testify against him.

The case is finally over.
